I keep forgetting that German paras during WW2 were actually air force personal rather than army. At least I assume so since they were air force uniforms and insignia?

It was after the invasion of Crete and the large amount of casualties (the British knew the invasion was going to happen because of the compromised enigma code) that Hitler went off the idea of mass paratrooper operations. After they, they were basically used as an ad-hoc elite poly filler for weak spots in the German lines.

In real they (the fallschirmjagers) where defeated and captured by the dutch army at the 3 airfields they should had to capture near the Hague and did not get a hold on the bridges in Rotterdam. So they made a movie about the attack at the Moerdijk bridge near the town of Dordrecht. The video clip shown is part of a Dutch documentary
The fallschirmjäger were not part of the Wehrmatch, they were part of the Luftwaffe, just some commandos or SS units were fallschirmjÄger out of the Luftwaffe if im not wrong.

When the 101st fought the FJ, they had everything on their side, total air supremacy, endless supplies & replacements etc. In Normandy, the Germans fought without ANY air support from the Luftwaffe, their resources were continually being eroded & worn down, meanwhile, the allies had no shortages of materiel, artillery support, air support etc. The fact they held on so long is testament to their calibre & esprit d'corps..

Secondly, the Germans put a containment force around Bastogne & the main force continued it's thrust towards one of their key vital objectives- the Meuse river. The significance of Bastogne has been completely over blown to save US face.

Bastogne cannot be compared to Crete, the former was a defensive action from prepared positions, with relatively concentrated US forces in an urban environment. Urban environments generally prevent effective use of armour & the defender can inflict disproportionately high casualties against an attacking force. The German FJ in Crete fought predominantly in open country, many of their KIA occurred during the actual para drop.

@MegaWolfgang "were", I think after the 4th (?) paratrooper division they were no longer trained as paratroopers, but rather as elite infantry. It was after the invasion of Crete and the large amount of casualties (the British knew the invasion was going to happen because of the compromised enigma code) that Hitler went off the idea of mass paratrooper operations. After they, they were basically used as an ad-hoc elite poly filler for weak spots in the German lines.

This video is a part of a german propaganda movie they made several months after they attacked Holland. Its german woii propaganda re-enactment and not real. In real they (the fallschirmjagers) where defeated and captured by the dutch army at the 3 airfields they should had to capture near the Hague and did not get a hold on the bridges in Rotterdam. So they made a movie about the attack at the Moerdijk bridge near the town of Dordrecht. The video clip shown is part of a Dutch documentary

The M1C US paratrooper helments had airborne cloth chin straps different from Infantry models in that they were fitted with a short tab that snapped inside the M-1 paratrooper helment liner. Why did the Germans call American Airborne "Devils in Baggy Pants.' German Uniforms were for designed for parades. A 82nd paratrooper charged a German machine gun nest 5 days after D Day; shooting 3 German soldiers with his M-1 rifle.

Had the Germans seized the bridge their tanks and troops could have route to Utah Beach. Instead a ragtag assembly of badly dropped paratroopers banded together and held the bridge. German tank attack was stopped by 4 privates with bazookas. A sergeant took command of a machine gun from the front to drive off German Infantry.

An example that shows that Allied equipment were better is the semi-automatic rifle vs the bolt-action german rifle. Another fact which germans got ''their asses kicked'' was because americans joined the war when the german army had a huge lost on their army and equipment.

@Dogmeat1950 Fair enough, but those aspects do not actually relate to fighting tactics, leadership etc. It is indisputable that the Germans were better led at ALL levels, they were also far more imaginative in their tactics. IE They would regularly use infiltration & attack allied units from the rear. The Germans had no choice but to be daring in their tactics, post D-Day, they were fighting for the very existance of Germany. The average allied soldier just wanted to get the job done & go home.

When the 101st fought the FJ, they had everything on their side, total air supremacy, endless supplies & replacements etc. In Normandy, the Germans fought without ANY air support from the Luftwaffe, their resources were continually being eroded & worn down, meanwhile, the allies had no shortages of materiel, artillery support, air support etc. The fact they held on so long is testament to their calibre & esprit d'corps..

Secondly, the Germans put a containment force around Bastogne & the main force continued it's thrust towards one of their key vital objectives- the Meuse river. Had they crossed the Meuse, it was a straight drive to the primary objective- Antwerp. Guess who stopped them? British XXX Corps did in a pitched battle. The significance of Bastogne has been completely over blown to save US face.

Bastogne cannot be compared to Crete, the former was a defensive action from prepared positions, with relatively concentrated US forces in an urban environment. Urban environments generally prevent effective use of armour & the defender can inflict disproportionately high casualties against an attacking force. The German FJ in Crete fought predominantly in open country, many of their KIA occurred during the actual para drop.
