Without HTC sense or Motoblur the OS is no longer attracted to the OEM, it makes sense they need a UI to go over there so they can say "look at our clock widget that shows full screen weather" OEM's don't want there phone to blend with 1000 other android phones.
While I agree with Steve Job's criticism of Android for being fragmented (although he must be exaggerating quite a bit), he is completely mis-characterizing what it means to be open. Microsoft isn't open because they, just like Apple, tie the developers down to one correct way of doing things with little or nothing in the way of customization and code modification. That they don't integrate their software, or don't tie it to specific hardware, but that's an issue of fragmentation, not openness.
The real failure and android devices is that many manufacturers and distributors try to copy apples business models and proprietary software models, in the short term by locking down phones and capabilities. However unlike apple they offer no long term support and abandon perfectly good hardware of obsolescence by failure to give the needed support or the specifications needed for community support. I'm not aware of anyone actually leveraging the openness to its fullest potential for consumers.

There is an integrated app store called the Android Market where the majority of applications for Android systems are easily downloadable.
The companies that are launching their own markets will have only apps that work for their phones but the standard market will have all of them as well it's just for simplification.
Also i don't think any developers test on multiple systems, they get messages from users if the app doesnt work
@JonBj2 youre dumb, theres going to be 5 stores to search for apps in android. theres 6 different UI skins, making it inconsistent experiences between phones, and making the phones work on different versions of the OS. its a mess

Some of the different companies have their own UI's but some don't, mine does but i can always switch it to the standard Android skin with an integrated home switcher.
And due to the incredible variety of phones the OS has to be specifically tailored to the phone itself, this has its pros but also cons though.

They just look for any excuse to rip on the company who captured 95 percent of the tablet market. Once Apple opens up the iPhone to Verizon next year, HTC and Motorola better get ready for the onslaught. Hell, AT&T actually received more than Verizon this year due to the iPhone alone

@Mafia1779 Even when the iPhone drops on Verizon, even if it captures ATTs customers, it will be hard to take customers away from being grandfathered into unlimited data. Android currently has the biggest cut in mobile marketshare in the US. Customers are different, you can't assume everyone wants one phone. Don't forget about converters and new customers, iphones going android and vice versa. I used to own both, now I own WP7, until Android or MS does something, I'm eying an iPad for a home tab

There is an integrated app store called the Android Market where the majority of applications for Android systems are easily downloadable.
The companies that are launching their own markets will have only apps that work for their phones but the standard market will have all of them as well it's just for simplification.
Also i don't think any developers test on multiple systems, they get messages from users if the app doesnt work

@LightCan I never said there weren't going to be different stores but the specialized stores will have ONLY apps that work on the specific stores, the regular store has all of 'em.
Some of the different companies have their own UI's but some don't, mine does but i can always switch it to the standard Android skin with an integrated home switcher.
And due to the incredible variety of phones the OS has to be specifically tailored to the phone itself, this has its pros but also cons though.

I think that-- if steve jobs wasnt such a control freak, many of apples products would not be the very very top of the line products that they are. In order to fulfill the imagination of a visionary like steve, being proprietary is the only option. It's also crucial to preserve brand identity.

Though Steve Jobs might be right about the fragmentation... But his views are very subjective to the concept of "Open". In other words, he's seriously advocating that "Choice" is not an option. There's a difference between letting the people choose what they want and let the course of evolution take place than forcing them with a solution. Perception on both ends can challenged, but we all know what happen to Windows with their operating system. It limits creativity and that’s what Apple is here

The only advantage of Android is the flash web browser but it's not an issue anymore since all my favorite streaming website now support iPhone format in one way or another. I'm not a fan boy of apple or windows, if you actually listen to this, some of it is true, Steve Job's has a good point. But hes pointing out all the negatives of Android while pointing out all the positives of Apple which is obviously bias.
