  • damm did you keep all other iphones

  • Durrr don't hold your phone like a claw

  • iphone or the shitphone loll

  • what an ugly case.

  • quit bitching about the bumper it doesn't just help the antenna it also protects your phone if it drops on the floor

  • my android phones dropped calls too and they forced cloded many times i was sick of it

  • Well sucks for u leftys out there! Good luck making calls

  • Well sucks for u leftys out there! Good luck trying to make calls

  • 10 people hold there phone THE right way. Who's gonna grasp there phone so tightly while talking on it? Your choking the shit outta it. Lol.

  • hey man if you turn off your 3g i find it works just fine mate so go to setting general network and turn off enable 3g im sure your find it works like a charm :) email me and tell me how you find it.

    extreme77@live.co.uk

  • this is why my uncle took his back and got the torch..

  • haven't heard of any of the droid phones having this problem...8)

  • What's the point of having a cool feature when it disconnects in the middle of it? I'm sticking to my BB Torch and my Samsung Galaxy S. So much better right about now and I used to be a Iphone 3GS Fan lol

  • LOOOOOOL Apple Failed

  • Hi Mike,

Thank you so much for your two videos.

I was keen on getting the iPhone 4 (my iPhone 3G contract has expired, so I can upgrade now), but since I'm left-handed, I will most definitely give the iPhone 4 a skip and wait for the iPhone 5.

I'm sure Apple will have fixed the problem by then.

  • I have to agreed that I have the sam problem and I noticed that when I switch off the 3G, the line do stay longer and have less drop calls although it still happens.

I phon isa great phone but I think it is At& T service. Their reception reallys sucks11

  • apple is fucking genius.

this makes people buy their bumpers.

which means every good call is worth a bumper

  • It's wierd cause when I cover the bottom left corner I go down to 1 bar but I never drop the call. Always keeps it. And Canada wINS cause the iPhone 4 is only $159 for a 16GB model and we have great coverage with our carriers. My carrier is Fido and no problems so far!

  • that what people pay for.... you have to pay a lot of money for the phone, but you get a antenna problem... 3GS owns!

  • lol "i spend the whole day on this stupid thing"

  • do you only lose signal without the bumper when you hold it in your left hand ?

  • It's a problem that needs to be addressed. Apple seems to be dodging the issue?

  • bumpers didnt fix anyhting

  • how the fuck do u get all these iphones man. u change iphones like i change socks

  • It's not that big of a deal...

I don't get it. This only seems to happen in the US.

If i were to hold a phone I wouldn't put my whole palm on the bottom. My fingers would only be down there...

And just use your right hand!!!

  • @iAppleFTW It does happen with your right hand also, and you only need to put 1 finger over the antenna black line for the signal to drop. And it happens to ALL iphone 4's worldwide.

  • mine doesn't even do that.

  • i got the anser ,, I think,,, most def ,,,,

  • When talking on my ip4 I don't hold it in contact with the antenna, the problem is that when I hold it in my (left) hand, and browse/use app's etc, the signal drops quickly and loses connection. This means if I want to use my iphone for something other than calling and want to hold it in my, as is natural, left hand, then the 'phone' part of the device is rendered useless. I wouldn't mind using a bumber but then why have I paid a premium price for such a beautiful premium product?

  • Cosmetic Hype....! Apple knew about this problem , they still placed this product on the market for sale....and people will still run to the mail and buy it !

  • i have the iphone 4 and i never hold that phone that way cause my hand would be in the way when on the phone dint really have problems with antenna sorry to see the you have problems like that .

  • its AT&T, no problems in canada

  • why dont you hold the phone in your right hand..

problem solved.. no need to get frustrated

  • This is really pathetic. Apple clearly has a problem here, but rather than own up to it, they blame it on the customers, by telling them that they need to hold the phone differently or / and that they should also get a bumper. Way to go Steve Jobs!

  • Oh micro cell

  • Does that effect texting? And what's that micro-whatever sorry I forgot what's it's called (horrible memory)

  • I did the same exact thing!!! spent about 7 days with ATT and apple trying to figure this out!!....ATT was very cooperative but apple was rude and they acted like there was no problem with my phone! bs! I have had a very sad and horrrible experience with this so called "upgrade" that I got....I am going to return my iphone4 because I will not be part of helping apple get discustingly rich from a phone that i paid for that never lets me get on the internet. steve job! wrong move on this I promise

  • mine was dropping calls yesterdaywith good signal out doors with a bumper.

  • this antenna problem won´t be fixed with a software-update, it can´t.

wait until the next iphone comes out.

  • getting a new phone wont work

  • No point trying to point this issue out, The fanboys will throw apples at u

  • ... can't believe you're getting your third while I can't get my hands on one...

  • the bumper that iphone is going to give is so ugly and cheap looking. if i need the bumper for iphone to work properly, then whats the big deal about its slim factor? the bumper will make the phone looks thick and ugly.

  • iphone 4 is just like the vista of apple.....

  • How do you have the money to buy like five phones that all have the same problem,

  • Guy! this is not a hardware issure, its physics, your body acts as a ground when you touch antennas. That is why they dont put them outside phones anymore. They do improve when they are external, but you shouldnt go out of your way to cover them. In the video, you are staring out with bad signal then holding the phone in particular way, there are hundreds of ways you can hold it and have perfect reception, but doing this will get people to watch, and you get good viewer ratings !!

  • @Jbefusjon seriosuly, do u have a little think to ur self on how to hold ur fone before u pick it up and use it? if u do, then u may have issues dude. when i pick ma fone up, i just hold wotever way. p.s pay all that money and get phone that u have to think everytime u wonna touch it! im jus gonna get the 3gs.

  • You dont have to hold it different, the natural way is not going to lose the signal, you actually have to pay attention to the way you are holding it IF you want to make it lose signal. In my daily use, it NEVER happens. Everything else about the phone is simply amazing. I do agree that they have a bit of an attitude, however the phone is the highest quality out there. The screen seems like it was developed in outer space, its stunning, video is amazing , and its super fast !"

  • Wait so you went and just got it replaced with a brand new phone? I thought they only give you a refurbished one.

  • I cannot believe that after all hype hype, apple release a product that doesn't even work properly. All I want is a phone that works. I don't want to hold it in some weird way with one leg this way while holding a can of tuna. It's supposed to be a phone that does other stuff not other stuff that has a phone in it... Shame Apple, shame. Glad I didn't buy one, my iPhone 3g is great!

  • I completely agree. Dropping reception bars is one thing, but having dropped calls is another issue completely. Dropping calls is the real concern, since that's how people will be using the phone - for calling. For Steve Jobs to tell people to hold the phone differently is impractical. Most people hold the phone normally, it's not like they purposely cover the entire phone when calling.

  • I Honestly Beleive That Saying Don't grip the iPhone is a silly reply but who holds the iphone with his left hand? it just doesnt feel normal...

  • @TheStraightMusic There are left-handed people, and people who are deaf on their right ear. So holding the phone with a left hand may be completely normal to them :)

  • Why the hype about no problem at all? Apple's competitors lost market share. And some people will buy apple stock at the current bargain price and sell it with high profits next week when Apple announces its brilliant quarterly results. The whole thing is a non-issue. If it were a problem, all users would simply return their iPhones, as Apple offered to give the money back if they wish.

  • my iphone4 works great...... maybe it was first batch that has this problem?

  • If your notice the $30 bumper case just covers the outside metal ring which is that antenna. The knew the whole time.

  • They knew what the problem was the whole time. They should give people a $30 bumper case then replace all of the early iPhone 4's with iPhone 4.1.

  • in 3 days, 1.7 million iphone 4 have been sold...

in 3 weeks, less than 700 iphone 4 have been returned

for those iphone users who didn't return their iphone 4 are certified apple fanboys=)

  • My signal bar always go to no service but i didn't know a case would help. Well it dies coz I have full signal bar now. It is so stupid!!!

  • even though you dont hold your phone, the reception is only 2 or 3 bars! the only thing you can complain is ATT. i have iphone 4 too....i try hard enough to make it to no service however...i failed to do that....it always minimum 2 bars inside and 3 or 4 bars outside. DONT COMPLAIN APPLE, GO COMPLAIN ATT.

  • Hey guys, i got the the iphone and had the signal problem i originally thought it was connected to where i live. Well i had an app issue with a corrupted file restored my iphone and got a case to protect it. The case is an incipio, it was 29.99 and it is a gel case but has a hard shell that goes on top of the gel it actually fixed all my signal issues and now i had not had any dropped calls. What i really like about the case us its protection with basically two cases on the phone that protects

  • But I'm right handed? :D

  • you cant bridge those 2 antennas so the little dents on the sides you cant cover BOTH of those if you touch one it works fine. It is frustrating but thats how it works

  • Awesome video.

I created a funny video on my channel (just to test some software really), but it has a funny dig at the reception issue.

  • The phone should never have gone into production - shame on Apple and db me for buying one.

  • Independent reviews have shown that the iphone4 (when antenna is not shorted out) gives twice the bandwidth of the iphone3G. So once you get a bumper on this phone, it will really rock. A bumper prevents your skin from touching and shorting out the antenna.

  • @wildmushroomfarmer My own tests show that speed to be highly dependent on your 3G coverage. It is true the phone does offer faster capacity, but you're still at the mercy of ATT, and of course you basically can't touch the phone.

  • how about getting a phone that works like it should. you shouldnt need to buy an unappealing case to make a phone work. apple makes shit products.

  • @wildmushroomfarmer Fucking retard!

  • @Spenz007 Exactly.

  • I got the bumper and it makes the cube work great I don't loose any bars even without the case I go down to two bars and no stopes calls

  • This is the same problem I have as well... How come Apple do not do some detail research and do some statement that this actually is an ISSUE.

  • This is not a problem with just your phone. It's a problem with all the iPhone 4's. I have the same issue with mine. A Griffon case I got with mine at BestBuy does alleviate the problem when in lower reception areas. Apple is rumored to be releasing an iOS update to improve how it handles calibration of the antennas which may also help, but not completely fix the problem. Either way you will likely need to get a case for your phone.

  • its not that bad but if u take calls with ur left hand its kinda of a problem

  • DUDE DUDE!!! um just checked my bank account and att refunded me the money for the iphone 4 on 6/30/10 without request! i have no idea whats going on, but my phone still works. i called my bank and told them i was going to use the funds and if att overdrafts my account by taking the money out again they would back me 100%. heres what the line item on my account says:

CHECK CRD PUR RTRN 06/28 AT&T

i deleted all of the numbers of course. can you get me any info on what might be happening?

  • actually i have full bars in my house and i can make the phone drop all the way down to one bar by covering the lower left with my thumb. another thing you are not addressing is the fact that is not just calls, its ALL CELLULAR DATA including internet browsing, maps, facebook etc. this is bigger than just dropping calls.

  • if you're living in shity CA or NY, move. That's one solution. Stop pissing. Apple is right. Change how you hold the phone or move to a better part of the country. Such as Philly

  • If I'm in a place with full coverage it's not a problem but when I'm in my house it blows

  • Mike, Not that it really corrects the real issue BUT I purchased a Speck candy shell case the day I got my iphone 4 and I have had no such issues. I realize that that putting a case on the phone is not really a solution to the underlying hardware issue but I thought I might mention it. I also have a MicroCell and have to say that if you suffer from low signal issues at home you will be impressed with the MicroCell, it is serving me well at that moment.

  • @gotgigaflops I've tried a couple cases and they do help, like I mentioned here with the Griffin case. I've got the Bumper now and it too works better. I want to check out the Candyshell ASAP.

I do have the MicroCell now -- check out that video.

  • Quick question: by now all the Internet is a buzz about Apple's blunder on 3G networks, but I can't seem to find *ANYWHERE* how the iPhone4 is doing on an old 2G network... Could you do the test again, this time on 2G network? The phone hasn't come to my country (yet), but I'm dying to know...

  • @TiberiuDubau09 When working with ATT we tested it on EDGE and it dropped out the same.

  • @wwwinsanelygreatmac : what news do you bring us now, with the release of iOS 4.0.1 update? Does it behave the same way, meaning is Apple throwing a smoke screen on the problem by simply modifying the way users visualize the signal loss rather than addressing the real problem? I'm dying to know the test results for both 3G and 2G networks.

Can't wait for the press conference either, what would they say? Buy a latex glove or something to the likes of that... :)

  • My iphone 4 drops 3 to 4 bars using it RIGHT HANDED and WITHOUT squeezing it. I hold it EXACTLY the same way I did my old 3G.

Love the phone, hate the signal

  • This is such BS.... I have never had a cell problem reception in my house with my 3gs... this iphone 4 is dropping every single phone call I make from my house, this is unacceptable as this is the phone I use for almost everything at home.... (only have a land line for house alarm) Even if I am not holding the phone the single strength jumps all over the place.... I honestly think this phone is going back.... :(

  • apple sucks get a evo 4g

  • iTape solve this problem? Put a Tape... /watch?v=GanfYUPaXH0

  • look at bars at 0:42 and then at 0:57. THEN NOTICE THE IPHONES 4 vs 3GS. They swapped places!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    . mmmm....left side bad signal...right side 4 bars!!!

I suggest you use your phone on the right side of your room....or move.

  • if you dont buy a case and drop it and it breaks wont you feel stupid that you didnt spend 30$ to protect it, so you spend hundreds to fix it...makes sense to spend 30 and stop bitching than to break it and spend 100 bucks to fix.

  • I have know idea why you guys are complaining, cuz my Dad hasnt dropped a call yet on his iphone 4 and he holds with what ever hand he wants.

  • I really like your review about the iphone reception issue and your stand on it. Some some other reviewer say " just put a case on it" but that is not the point. I should not have to buy a damn case just to get reception right?

  • @ohnoperiod your right.

why should you have to pay for a case?

it's stupid having to pay for a solution that apple fucked up.

if anything they should be giving them away!

  • gotta wait for iPhone 10

  • i think it was apple's idea for your to spend more money to buy a case... Otherwise have fun with drop calls! The bumpers and cases look cool so I'll buy it

  • You know what's funny in this video... they didn't test the 3gs, 3g too. Which also have the same problem. So this video means nothing.

  • @uru10ki see the previous two videos.

  • If you had to hold the phone in a certain way, then you could get carpel tunnel. They seriously rushed on this!

  • DO THE TEST AGAIN WITH FULL SIGNAL STRENGTH BEFORE DISPAREGING THE iPHONE4. ALSO DO THE TEST WITH A BUMPER OR CASE ON THE iPHONE4. I HAVE READ THAT UPWARDS AROUND 85% OF PEOPLE PUT A CASE ON THEIR iPHONE. I HAVE A BUMPER ON MY iPHONE4 AND HAVE HAD "0" ISSUES!!!

  • Fail: Clearly defective engineering.

  • @phototech11 ZOMG ZOMG ZOMG!!!11

  • @wwwinsanelygreatmac I do fully agree with you that it should work with or without a case. But I still disagree with your testing methodology. You even admint yourself that you are on the edge of service reception.

  • Comment removed

  • @wwwinsanelygreatmac

Maybe you are doing a bridge between the GSM and Wireless Antennas,if so just putting a finger o the separetion you will lose connection, but if that happens it's also stupid for the hardware.

Maybe putting a line of isolating tape on the buttom of the wireless antenna can isolate you body electric resistanse like the bumper case dose.

PS:Bumper are damn ugly!!!!!! like putting steel wheels on a Ferrari!! I go for leather casing

  • or wood :) i advice IWOOD for wood cases and Piel Frama for leather cases

  • @phototech11

What? Why should he do either? Both of those tests are "spread-cheek for Apple" moves. The phone - should not require either of these. Stop taking a hit and swallowing legitimate qualms for the sake of your love for a corporation. Trust me, they do not value you - why value them?

  • i hold my phone with my right hand will it still drop calls?

  • @Tony15Hill no....only the left lower corner

  • @dominican1227 kk then ill get one

  • @dominican1227 Left handers are screwed. They better practice using their other hand.

  • i dont see how you do this so easily, it takes 3 minutes with mine

  • @TelacastersRthebest that was funny as hell... I personally haven't dropped a call yet in any place other than where I normally do... But this is a real issue and u shouldn't have 2 hold the phone a cretin way... Even if it is the way most of us normally hold our phones!!!! Still glad I bought it...

  • I wear a TV antennae hat and it fixed the problem.

  • i hope apple didnt do this on purpose to increase sales of their cases

  • fml ...

iphone 4 was gonna b my first iphone

and now im having major doubts

my decision's going to come down to how apple reacts to this

    if they react at all

  • Hey! Apple should give free cases!

  • Nonetheless disappointing from Apple and Steve. In regards to Steve which is Apples response to have many users hold the phone the way we shouldn't is rude with a bad attitude. Having used a mobile phone for 13 years, first time i had to be told to hold a phone differently because my way is wrong or incorrect. Apple products used to be about quality and now its quantity and trying to be a trendsetter.

  • Comment removed

  • so basically if you are left handed you shouldnt buy the new i phone lol

  • I HAVE that PROBLEM and i have two iphone 4 one the face calls work the second is not working face calls ..

  • Mine has signal loss—death grip—except it doesn't drop calls. It does, however, render the internet connection useless. Strange thing is: wifi and bluetooth work flawlessly. Shouldn't the death grip a problem for *both* antennae?

I've had an iPhone 3g for the last two years, and it rarely ever dropped a call. I've gotten 10 dropped calls in the last two days, where usually I only get 2 dropped calls a month.

  • Excellent review ~ thanks.

I really dont think Steve Jobs and Team are acctually taking this seriously.

I'm an Apple fan but this is absolutely unacceptable.

iPhone4 the premier new Apple device and it fails when using it as a phone.

  • next product apple's going to make is a manual called "iHold", which contains instructions on how to properly hold your iphones.

  • Funny thing is ive never owned an iPhone before this piece of shit, i now own one is a pile of crap. i want a fix apple, quick.

  • Jobs response: (not 'Steve' as fanboys call him, as if they now him in person to call him 'Steve') "just hold it in a different way".

What a twat, so you buy a 700€ with a incredibly bad and just laughable design flaw and all they can say is, well, hold it ''differently''. So they basically telling us how to hold a fucking phone now. morons.

    iDiots.

  • Keep us updated on what you can do to eliminate this problem of dropped calls due to holding your phone. So stupid!!!

  • Very disappointed with Apple! I live in a remote part of Scotland, UK. Wanted to buy this as reception in my 3GS was poor. It seems that reception on the iPhone 4 is even worse! And the funny thing is that in my home on the O2 UK my 4 year old Sony Ericsson has 5 bars while iPhone 3GS has only 1 - 2 bars. This is an outrage.

  • You know the third phone is just going to do the exact same thing.

Rumor is that Apple will soon make an official statement about this issue soon, possibly on Monday.

  • apple is stupid, telling people to change how they hold the phone.... people control the phone... not phone controlling people... no one has to change shit of how they hold their phone.. apple need to get off their lazy ass and start finding a fucking solution.

  • yeah I got the iphone 4 on the 24th and I too have the same problems I never had so many calls dropped, not only drop call but the person I am talking to says I am very Choppy I paid over $300 and waited for over 6 hours in line for this thing and I cant hold it in my hand!!!! so with the iphone you can talk and surf the web but iam right handed like most Americans so when my G/F asks me when her bus should be there the phone is going in the left hand and i use my right hand to surf-DROPED CALL

  • Ahhh i just hope when I get my iPhone 4 it works...

  • lol.. this is normal and people need to change the way how to hold their phones? Wow, I never thought Apple could put out anymore bullshit, but this takes it.

  • I did a good thing not to jump in early and buy the "new revolutionary iPhone 4"....Now I will definitely get the new Driod X....whoaaaaaaa....im happy, I donno why???...I know why b'coz I didn't waste my $200 and have an issue with drop calls....

  • So you have 2 iPhones and 1 more comming in? Nice. (iPhone 4s)

  • when i touch the left corner it just goes down one or two bars it has not dropped a call yet

  • @revoltedsystem : It shouldn't even be doing that since the iPhone 4 is supposed to be the next best thing for cell phone users. How sad.

  • Lol Apple sends a replacement and it still does it....

  • I'd be so pissed if my newly purchased toy does that...........

  • i haven't dropped a call..

  • I do not know if 3G works at all like wifi, but perhaps the phones are fighting for airspace? it seems that the phones are fluctuating in a dependant manner, that is when the 3GS goes up, the Iphone 4 goes down, and vice versa, till the end where they seem to be about even.

  • LOL. Get the EVO 4 and enjoy real technology. Apple's money making crazed piece of shit is useless. Enjoying that AT&T service? How about that rape-contract they suckered you into?

  • lol the iphone always has problems when they first come out..

usually with a firmware update it can be fixed, but for this apple will hav to change it around inside the iphone and have everyone send their phones back for a new one...

    very sad.

  • 0:35 Thats EXACTLY what happened to me once. Last year when my iPhone 3GS would go into sleep mode at random times and would only work when the battery dies. Apple told me to call AT&T, AT&T told me to call Apple. I even ended up driving almost an hour to an apple store like you did. I was late for class and everythign haha

  • This is so stupid, i'll bet apple knew about the design flaw and assumed that most people are right handed therefore the signal wouldm't drop out. another problem is if your playing an internet game and you cup the phone in both hands the signal would dissapear completely. When you get your new iphone 4 cheak to see if it does the same thing when you block any other corner because at the moment you have only featured the left corner. Also in aus we get to be with whatever mobile supplier we want

  • I just find it funny AND scary that Steve J can stand up on stage and exclaim how "cool" and clever this antenna design is... did he not know that there's a reason no one else has done it? The reason is it's flawed. I'm guessing Steve never had a rabbit ear television, never touched the antenna and saw reception change.

But hey, everything Apple does is "magical" and if we can't understand that it's our problem.

  • AS SEEN ON CNET as well!
