4.41 behind the guy with the hat on!! It's blown me away as I didn't take too many photo's in those heady days so it's really cool to see this . Thanks for posting this video. Made me very VERY happy..
But man everyone..until I hear more.....I think the best Northern Soul song is by Main Change Sunshine is Her Way....never heard anything so beautiful recently...
@Zeldahunnie I'm only 23, but thank god now in Toronto, we have a "Shake Your Tailfeather" event, weekly, where we dance to this kind of music....always been my fave and currently occupies my ipod..but mostly Earth, Wind and Fire and frankie beverly and MAZE......but man, northern soul is extremely growing on me fast...another facet of the lovely music, and life in general, to add to my knowledge and wonderful compassion for the 70s and how it was...I've been wrapped with the decade since age 10
Love Northern soul from way back, Baggy trousers, long skirts, granny shoes and talc lol just dance all night love the Tunes : ) People down my way still loving it : )

It me back to 78 selling my watch in a Wigan pub so I had enough money for my membership and to get in to Wigan, lying about my age to get in I was 15 and telling my Mum I was going night fishing how many people go fishing in spencers and no fishing rods the memories were the best I went as many times as I could till it closed
wow, what memories! remember Edwin Starr performing for an hour and then doing it all again because HE loved it that much, and the sweat WAS raining down from the roof.Ive still got the cassette I recorded of that night.I think it was the second or third anniversary
The young ones with their Ecstasy driven raves think they were the first to discover .. dance .. music .. peace .. harmony .. and .. comradery .. No alcohol .. no trouble .. Just a few hours of Northern Soul Heaven .. *****
My Nane is Coral and I remember the Donny mob and expecially the Halifak lads and Sue from Bolton. Doea anyone remember Bernie McMachin from Wigan look to become mets again. Take care love this stuff
Was out in London Staurday nite-saw Billy the spinner at the start of this movie-still going strong-keep the faith and roll on Fleetwood-Edwin Starr RIP
this is where it all started. shame its gone. but the memory's still there for ever / keep the faith / i often wonder about the people i met down there, suppose like me they all got kids who are into shit music
now I know where raves started....I'm x Wiganer and this makes me really proud to be one.....my Dad was right into his Northern Soul and Wigan Casino.....tell you what though everyone looks wired ;)
What a wonderful time in our young lives to have the pleasure of spending our night dancing away to some of the greatest misic ever produced, and what an honour to dance on stage with Edwin Starr! pity you couldnt get the best dancers on camera, people like Andy Simpson,Frank Booper, Paul CJ Fielding, and Frank Sanderson, all whom disappeared when the lights and cameras came on !! for reasons unknown !!! however just to say a great big thank you.
Wonderful memories of such a time in our young lives, and being on stage with Edwin Starr was an honour, Pity that when the lights came on the best dancers such as Andy Simpson, Paul CJ Fielding, Frank Booper, and Frank Sanderson who wouldnt appear on camera, what a pity to miss out on such quality!! any way many thanks...
Ace video...what a guy Edwin Starr...born in Sheffield Uk..but still soulful...seeing the clips brings back a lot of memories i started going in 76 up to 1980..rarely missed a nigther..I lived breathed and dream t northern soul
Hi, Julie here! Got an email from an old mate from the Casino days and made me think about lookin up the old stuff. Fantastic days - wouldn't have missed them for the world. Lost a few good friends, but made so many more. I still attempt the odd spin when I'm pissed!!
The Holy Shine otherwise known as Wigan Casino brings those heavy nights of Northern Soul right back, those were the days and to top it all "im in it"...happy days, ktf.
i went to the casino around 83 traveled by train from northants with group of friends ,we had trouble from football hooligans who came down the streat chanting we hate soulies,we were a peaceable group of people and the united fans started a fight outside ,our lads fought back couragiously and police with dogs stopped the fighting, later inside i had my kit bag stolen all things we never had downsouth in all nighters ,keep the faith bros micky c
Went to the casino from being 16 in 74 until i got married in 78 and moved away from Wigan, happy days indeed. Used go to rock night, stay behind and clean up and stay on for the all nighter, once in a while Russ would let me crash out for an hour under his desk and once won a dancing comp there. Didnt spot my self in the vid, saw loads of top soul bands there inc Edwin Star, fav was R Dean Taylor cause i loved "Ghost in my house", fav song was "The Snake" A beltin blast from the past, cheers.
Holy shit blackpool mecca sat night Aways remember levine saying first one out tonight and a flood of bowling bags and shoes hittin the floor, jumped into the sunbeam rapier my dads car ha ha ha got 85 mph one weekend on the way to wigan oh shit the workouts on that dance floor my mum wanted to know what the talcum powder was for!! shit now i cant even dance a 15 min set at the christmas party, ooooo!!!! the days. keep the faith wiggy from oswaldtwistle lancs.
Hi i am pretty sure the guy at 7.23 mins is my brother this was his style of dancing very unique and easy to recocnise for me anyway he,s still in to his music and scooters. i dare say he wont addmit to it
Yes they played the crap and copped out in the late 70's BUT. Mr M's was always oldies. In the main we had people who played NEW stuff? which have now become classics on the scene. Every venue has its merits and Wigan was one.
Edwin was a great guy and a brilliant performer. I met him several times from 1974 onwards and he always remembered my name! - even though it may have been several years since I'd seen him previously. He was like that with everyone, always treating them as someone special, and with a smile for all. He was a truly genuine "star". Sadly missed by all who knew him.
Are you serious? i took more drugs at Wigan than any where else!! how else do you think we could dance all night, 1971 to 1974 was the best years of my life starting with the Torch in Stoke and ending in Wigan the best Northern Soul Club in the world.
Dr Whatson I wouldn't apologise to anyone that is offended at all . Maybe a few home truths here : it was Wigan that broke away from Northern Soul to play this mix of pop and played to death oldies ,not Blackpool Mecca . To say that a track like Judy Street's is Northern Soul is an insult - can you seriously put this track against the likes of George Blackwell's "Cant loose my Head" or "Don't you worry baby the best is yet to come" , Bessie Banks .
I went to Wigan on the first night in September 1973, and it was fine until about mid-74. Then in 1975, Wigan sold the Northern Scene out to the tabloid press. Soon after that it was swamped by divs wearing fashions 3 years out of date dancing to pop crap like "Footsie", "Hawaii Five-O", Soussan's tailor-mades and Murial Day etc. If you were one of these people I apologise, but this is an historical fact. Wigan almost killed the Northern Scene for genuine Soul fans.
Great vid....It's hard to explain to those who have never been there how it REALLY was. It was unbelievable. My favourite was the oldies in MrM's fridays and then returning for the saturday night session and the next day to a dayer.Monday was hell being an apprentice on 10 quid a week :O) Any of the Bradford/Halifax lot remember jumping the train? or even when we travelled by bus and stopped at Birches Services? Oh yes! the happiest days of my life indeed.
33 years on I still remember it and reguarly listen to Northern Soul. You had to be at Wigan to understand it. People used to travel from all over the UK every weekend to get there. It took over your life and was by far the best 'disco' I have ever been to. The videos were shot with lights on. The light in the club was mainly from two purple strip lights, a strobe and of course the light from the top windows at dawn for the final 3.
Wish i had a chance to go to this great place, i was a little too young though... and now im little too old for it all lol. Ah well, some great memories nevertheless.
This is one of the better accounts of Wigan Casino that I've seen - minus some of the nonsense and hype. Loved Edwin & Brenda Holloway's contributions! Is this available on video to buy? What are the details of it's initial broadcast? Anyone know?
