You know what all that paper promissory note (paper bill) will do to US economy. With every new $100 bill printed, your $100 bill in your pocket or in your bank account has just depreciated by 50% to $50. If there is only one $100 bill in the market, it is valuable. As soon as the bank prints 10 more $100 bills and circulates it into the market, that original $100 bill suddenly loses its value by tenfold. Now your $100 bill will only buy you $10 worth of goods instead of $100 worth of goods.

Re-printing and furtherdeveloping banknotes is necessary because of making it more difficult to counterfeit (since the counterfeiters do also step forward with techological benefits). Secondly, banknotes do use up, become ugly, sputty, suttered, squeezed, ripped, flaw in print with time. So, a periodical renewal of certain amounts of circulating money is needed to keep it usable.

For a replacement, exactly the amount of bad banknotes being destroyed is re-inserted new into circulation.

For every bill that is made, that same amount is owed in the form of debt. Therefore it costs $100.12 plus interest to make a hundred dollar bill.

@blacktooth51 A dollar is a current unit of currency used in USA and many other nations. Right now, the dollar has value. However, inflation has slowly degraded it. There is no intrinsic value in a paper dollar. The only intrinsic value available is in the form of coins and metals. Changing the design of currency will not improve the economy. All it does is maintain a few government jobs and hopelessly try to increase confidence in our currency. However, I find the redesigned bills to be pretty.

Iether you have some gold or silver to protect your wealth and make it throught the monatary collapse or you have none and you will have to ride it out. My hunch is 25%-50% of the dollars worth will be backed by Gold. Apparently the currency will go into circulation by Feb 10 2011. The United States will not allow our currency to loose its world Currency reserve status. If our dollar is backed by gold. Gold will go up in value big time.
