Saw them twice last year (2010) at Durness and closer to home at Fochabers. Both times fantastic. Phil in particular has a real sense of humour with ali as the straight man. I wouldn't hesitate to see them again for both the unsurpassed musical talent and humour
Saw these two, four days ago, at the Livingston Center. They had another twenty years on them, from this video, but they were absolutely amazing. I've never watched two guys that much in synch with each other. Laughing, telling stories. It made for an incredibly entertaining evening. Wonderful!!!
Mr. Aly Bain must be among the best fiddlers ever, you may or might not like the kind of music but really, he just becomes one with his instrument. amazing.
Actually it is. I'm a singer who would like to be a fiddler but there you go. I always remember, in relation to Phil, hearing a version of Dumbarton's Drums by the Corries. I thought it was about he dullest song imaginable. Later I heard an arrangement by Phil and it sounded like the best Scottish song ever written. The man is a genius.
Great stuff. Incidentally, Aly Bain is not only a terrific fiddler he is also a nice guy. He took the time to personally e-mail me in answer to a query I had sent to his agent. Not many stars will do that.
If you interested, there is another version of this set played by the Schryer Triplets on their CD "Triple Fiddle". I think you can buy it online. The three of them harmonize over the My Lilly and then jam through the last two tunes. It's pretty powerful.
Yes, Scotland do treasure this fantastic pair, both wonderful in thier own right. Phil used to play along side his late brother, who in my opinion was one of the best players ever ;-)
Dear lovely Aly Bain, I was around when he first came out, watched him travel the globe and keep up the Shetland fiddle tradition...as we both got older...and I still get that wee frisson of excitement when he's around...Hyeuch! Long live Aly and pals!
Excellent video. These two individuals must have logged an incredible number of hours of playing time over the years. Does anyone know the name of the pianist?
The pianist is Violet Tulloch from Shetland. I should have noted this in the credits, although SwinginDrumMeister has helpfully put this in his comments. I should have done it myself. Sorry Violet.
The tunes are My Lily / The Sweetness Of Mary / Hughie Jim. I play this set. Aly Bain is my "virtual teacher" e the video posted are very interesting for me. Thanks
when was this video taken? They both look so young. But have been fantastic musicians then and are it now.

Absolutely Brilliant!. These two great musicians sound as good today as in
this earlier film.
Saw them 6 times in Concert last year

I cannot think of two finer musicians who blend so well together. Surely Scotland must treasure this fantastic pair.
I could spend all day (and often did!) listening to them playing.
