I believe the perception is that players in the Canadian major juniors (regardless if they're Canadian or not) have been coached and scouted to the point where their maximum upside is well-known. There's a greater potential that players in other leagues (Canadian or not) were mis-scouted, or mis-coached and have much higher upsides - so some teams see them as worth a gamble even though as a group, on average, they're likely to underperform those in Canadian major juniors.

well you can't argue against the FACTS. Canadians have produced the most hall of fame and allstar caliber players so far. No doubt other countries are catching up but tavares, hall, stamkos, crosby, lecavalier, thornton, staal....u can't even compare right now in the draft. Only ovechkin went No.1 in recent years, everyone else canadian! Bottom line, while the league may still be a Canadian majority, that majority has been shrinking steadily over the last 10 years or so.

Canada probably always will produce the most NHLers, which is fine.

The point is Cherry and you need to realize there are thousands of highly skilled players that ARE NOT Canadian, and that will continue to be proven in the coming years.

Yeah of course slowly as hockey gets bigger in other countries more people will get better and we will get guys like ovechkin and malkin ripping up the league. But in Canada, hockey is the number one sport, you are outside playing road hockey at a very young age, it's just the way Canadians are. We watch hockey, we play hockey we breathe hockey. Other countries like the states don't care for hockey much at all.

Plus, I would have to say that outside of Canada and the some of the states most people do not know what the stanley cup is. Why would some russian care if his name is on the cup? it's just sometimes very interesting how on some cases some europian players just vanish in the playoffs, and some Canadian players like Crosby play through the playoffs with a broken foot. That just shows how much it means to Canadians to have your name on that cup.
