hey I have a biocube 14 with stock lighting. I was thinking of getting led's for it at rapid led, but just want to know how your corals are doing under leds?......would you say its worth it? also how long have you had your set up under led?
@superlad3555 This tank is not overstocked. It only has two clownfish in it that I see. The perfect amount and size of fish for a tank this size. Yes, it has lots of coral but they don't add to the bioload. The corals wouldn't be growing so well if the tank was overstocked and had poor water quality. This tank is lovely, IMHO.
Can I use the led lights with the stock bulbs? Where did you get these leds? How big are they? What are all the thing you have to buy for the leds? Thanks!
I removed the old lights and reflector. The LEDs are mounted to a big heatsink that I mounted within the acrylic splashguard. The stock hood is really just serving as a shell to hold the new lights.
Check out nano-reef (.com). There are several tutorials on there. You can find mine by searching yahoo for: DIY High Power LED Retrofit, Step-by-step guide
is this lighting ONLY LED? how well does it supplement the corals? is it as strong as metal halide? if not how about T5's? ill check out your thread on nano-reef =) im starting a reef tank and thinking about making a forum for it. it is a 20 long and im interested in LEDs now
Yeah, I'm only using LEDs now. My PAR measurements showed it somewhere between a 70w and 150w MH bulb. The corals are much happier than w/ the stock PC bulbs.
awesome ill have to check it out. i also saw your thing on nano reef about this. you should sell these on e-bay! haha i bet u could make alot of money.
was wondering if i could get some pointers on how to retrofit my hood. Are there any other types of led lights that are also good or are Cree Specific bulbs the only way to go? Also if you've got a DIY tutorial that would be great. Tank looks awesome! Thanks.
There are a few LED brands that are decent. I know the most about Cree, but Luxeon makes some decent LEDs as well. I have a step-by-step guide on Nano-reef. At the nano-reef site, do a search for "DIY High Power LED Retrofit". I'm user name "Waterproof".
Shoot me an email with any questions. Thanks for the feedback!
Do you think you could support most corals with a 4 white 4 blue in a ten gallon cube?
