i never understood the point of public juloos's. we shia are best known for 'hitting ourselves'. rather than trying to spread the message of Imam Husain (a.s.) to non-Muslims and non-Shia in a way they will understand, we take a symbol of mourning that is already misunderstood and do that instead. tell me: will this maatam encourage Toronto's non-Muslims to come towards the Imam's message?

@xerojreffaj I agree. If it's done with decency then it can be a beautiful message that is conveyed but when men lose themselves in the excitement of the mataam and act like barbarians then the whole message is lost. When you go to the rozas and see other cultures (especially Iranian) they due mataam with such piety. Unfortunately the Pakistani and some Indian don't have the same shame.

You would be surprised to see the number of converts that come to these processions; stand shoulder to shoulder and pay respect to Imam Hussain (a.s). There is logic and reason in doing mattam (Azadari)...I would not label you as a "Masumeen-youth" but try understanding the meta-physical aspect and core element that "Azadari" illustrates
