  • When you look for your new handycam can you see if it suppresses wind noise, I looked at another persons video where all voice was virtually wiped out by wind noise.

Thanks for the vidoes so far.

  • @umvhu We got our new camera last week - a Sony HDR CX560V. One of the features we looked for was wind noise suppression. We are also looking at accessory microphones, socks etc to reduce stray noise.

  • Well my friend you are using another camara but it look to me that the quality of the video and sound is better than the one that you used as your primary camara.

I always look at your videos and I like them alot

    thank

  • @Velero55 Our Sony Handycam was state of the art when we got it but that did not include hi-def video.Nowadays, even cheap cameras like the Bloggie take 1080p video and 12 megapixel stills. Still the Bloggie has severe limitations. We have ordered a new generation handycam to replace our primary camera so we can shoot great videos in any light and at greater distances with better sound quality. We think you will see and appreciate the difference.

  • That Sony Blogger? did a great job. Thanks for sharing. I'm looking forward to seeing videos taken as you travel.

  • wow another great video,... cant wait for the alaska trip... this is as close to my dream as i can get right now.... eventually i will have a trimaran set up completely electric. lots of solar and wind.

oh and fresh fish!!!! wishing you all the best, cort.

  • Good morning, I want to thank you for sharing your video journal. My wife and I sail the waters off of Vancouver island and we sit together to watch your videos and enjoy them very much.

    Dave and Karen

  • Keep up the inspirational videos, I am planning a cruise this summer to Alaska from Seattle. Look forward for experience.

  • Been watching you guys for a bit here gotta say I love the Videos you have done and hope to cross wakes with you someday.

  • Glad you are going to film some trips in the island chain. Hope to see you at the fuel dock sometime. I like your style of cruising - going small, taking your time and having good food along the way.

  • You guys are awesome! I really do appreciate you taking the time to share your adventures. Looking forward to you next installments!

  • Always watch your videos with interest. Living in Plymouth in the U.K. during the summer I get to do a lot of sailing. Had to sell my boat a couple of years ago but still manage to get out. Look forward to your next adventure.

  • Chuck - I thought I'd share a video I made this past July sailing on Lake Erie with friends. I am not in the video (I am behind the camera). Go to my channel, musketman2008 and watch Sailing Lake Erie.

  • @musketman2008 Cool slide show. Never been on the great lakes.

  • @vega1860 They are like mini-oceans except the wave period is much shorter creating a chop, especially Lake Erie.

  • @musketman2008 Cool slides.

  • Still enjoying your videos. Looks like lovely sailing where you are. Pity I can not get there without crossing the Atlantic and passing through the Panama canel. Hope to sail to the Azores in May. Will be taking a leaf out of your book and keeping the sail area down to keep the stress on the boat under control. It is your videos that have inspired me to take on the trip. Was looking to get a Vega but am going to stick with my Rival.

  • Really enjoy following your escapades and marveling in your relationship with each other, the boat and the world. Thanks for sharing. As a wannabe and a gear head, I'm always interested in segments or portions on equipment (boat, electric, nav, video). Having walked that same dock it was fun to see it again. Alaska? I'd have thought your first run back to OR would have satisfied that north-in itch. What about west??

  • @ames477 Which ever way the wind blows d;^)

  • Thanks again Chuck and Laura for sharing this part of your lives with everyone. Fair winds and following seas to Alaska. We will be watching.

  • Also give a couple of my music vids a look see if you like. :)

  • @JamieMotzMusic Looking good Jamie. Thank you for your service.

  • keep making those vids! inspiring me to sail once i get out of the military! just a couple more years...

  • love the vids the only way i can see an improvement is to have more on another note i just got an irwin that im going to do alot of work on then try some short sails on it any advice would be nice thank you so much for all the great vids you have done

  • Please don't rap me in the mouth for this, but... My cruising is in fresh water so I've always had a slight fear of sea water eating up my boat. What do you do to keep Lea Lea in good shape in the salt environment. Need to calm my fears.

  • @musketman2008 Fear not. Insufficient space for a full answer here but: Pre-75 GRP hull of course is impervious. Wood actually does better in salt than in fresh water. Good quality 316 ss and bronze fittings are resistant to corrosion. Zinc anodes will save your prop and shaft. Fresh water rinse above the water line as often as possible helps. The main problem is electronics. There is no avoiding the spray and mist. I'll ponder it and write an article for our web site

  • Great video quality, I watched this on my TV and it looks amazing! How long do you think it will take to sail to Alaska? Thanks for posting another great video!!!!

  • @smacdiesel We want to stop at Midway so it might take two months.

  • Looks like the new camera works well. thanks for the update. I look forward to following your adventures in Hawaii (spent a week at the Marriott next to Nuwiliwili Bay in August, great place and looked like the sailing was wonderful there.) I'm hoping to see you in person when you get to Alaska, if you stop in Sitka.

Thanks for letting me sail vicariously with you,

    Jim

  • @nitejazz Sitka is definitely on the itinerary. We may even winter there.

  • Looking good all the way to Texas, hehe. Love the videos, thanks for doing them as alot of us has to live vicariously through you.The camera is doing fine

  • We enjoy your video's the new camera works great please keep it coming.

  • hello, nice camera ,you a good camera operator, is very hard to move the camera and keep subject in frame .Alaska is OK but the tie at Cook inlet is close to 30' and mud ,to the south near Homer is better and they have a marine park , but is just commercial boating.I will like to see you going west, Japan, philippines, or south east, Galapagos, ect. looking for you next post God speed

  • Love your videos! I've been a subscriber for a while now.

How do you manage to get such a great quality from such a cheap camera??? What is the model of the camera you were using before this one? Editing software?

Thanks and Fair Winds! If you ever get over to the "right coast" look us up! My skype address is gboase.

  • @gboase @gboase Thanks for watching our videos. Our primary camera for all of the previous videos was a Sony DCR-SR100 hard drive handycam. For the Back to Hawaii series we added a GoPro Hero. The new one I shot this video on is a Sony Bloggie that shoots 1080p video and takes 12.8 mega pixel stills. Laura does most of the video and has been a photography buff for years. I think you will agree, she has a great eye. Editing is done with Sony Vegas Platinum.

  • Okay, I seriously hate being landlocked here in Oklahoma now more than ever... :(

  • @DirkDiggler1711 LOL! The reason I quit the US Army was because they wanted to send me from Schofield Barracks back to Fort Sill.

  • @vega1860 Well, Ft. Sill has changed significantly since you were here. But it still sucks to be land locked like this. Oh well, there is always the "retirement" dream, right? :) I just realized today that we have a dozen or so sails here on our local lake. (Took me 15 years to realize that, guess I should pay attention more) Guess it would be a great place to learn handling, since it's so small and would have to tack constantly.

  • A few words.

  • Someday I'll get the boat in the water... But until then your videos are the next best thing. Keep sailing and uploading vids. Thank you.

  • Look forward to every new vid! Keep em coming! (and thanks for sharing!)

  • Keep 'em coming, I'm always looking forward to the next video.

P.S. Ive taken a liking to Romeo y Julieta - Cedro # 2's....but they cost me about $3.50 a piece through Cigars International online....maybe you can recommend me a good smoke Chuck.

  • @boozelele I like the Punch Pita with EMS wrapper. I get them fro JRs. I also like the JR Alternatives. They seem just as good at half the price.

  • It looks like nothing but good times

  • Another great little video, thank you. Your little Sony handicam did a brilliant job and I am now going to upgrade to a HD.

Am a little envious though as we had 5" of snow here in Chicago last night and it's currently around 22 degF outside, and would be nice to be near Diamond Head.

  • Main Channel shot was nice :) yeah, very nice and informative vlog, appreciated .. to Alaska Next ..? excellent..

  • @aleko11 Our next video will be a detailed look at the Ala Wai boat harbor from the approach to the inner harbor with a little tour of the facilities - good, bad and ugly. I know we have mostly done voyaging at sea so far but this side of cruising is the kind of stuff we would like to see so we are going to try it and see what kind of response we get.

  • @vega1860 Our last good cam was a Sony that saved directly to DVD, and we thought it was the greatest. It was not HD and was probably more like 320P. More recently we have used our phones for 720P and have now bought a nice JVC that records to a memory card and has a 40x optical zoom with additional digital zoom. The 40x optical zoom is awesome.

I can see how you might want an external mic, and I really miss a manual focus that I can set for infinity on mine. Tripod is a must.

  • Great job, love following the trips, the new Sony bloggie worked out well! love to see the places you are visiting, anchorages and marinas, we started out in San Diego, up to WA worked through the Puget sound for two years, back down the cost to SF, and have been in the bay for the last year. its a short window to AK, so I’m anxious for you on that leg of your gurney

  • You should consider the Panasonic Lumix point and shoots. They're waterproof to 40ft and shockproof from 6ft. Plus it's small.

I have one and the photos and HD video that it can produce are almost at the level of my Canon 7D.

Keep up the wonderful blogs. I live/dream vicariously through you guys :)

  • Thank you both(oops...Bree too),

I really enjoy all of your videos...they kep me going in the cold months here in Wisconsin.

Hope to start my sailing adventures next fall when I am retired and my 1975 Chrysler C22 is ready for Lake Michigan.

  • Sorry (Bree) I just lost my 15 yo kitten right after Christmas. He was my best friend. Lover her anyway. Thats 75 or so in people years.

  • You’re making me sick..... Here I am stuck in the cold mountains of E Tennessee watching you basking in the Hawaiian sun. Just kidding. I’ve watched them all and other than wondering about Brie, wonderful. I can’t wait for the next one. Fair winds my friends... You should check out the GoPro camera.

  • @cougar0189c Thanks for watching. Bree is fine, just getting a little long in the tooth and cranky (She's 15yo) We have a GoPro. It's a great camera but has its limitations. We really need a good handy cam.

  • Looks better, actually. The 1080P on this cam has better definition. I can see your individual whiskers. lol.. Also the contrast and color is truer.

  • @tomperanteau When we got our old Sony HDD handy cam it was top of the line but HD video was not available. The Bloggie does take good HD video and 12.8mp stills too. A small package packed with features and easy to use. Laura has been giving it a workout the last few days. OTOH, the auto focus is slow, the zoom very limited and the sound recording minimal with no provision for an external mic or tripod mount.

  • @vega1860 Sound buffering can be stopped by putting a small piece of furniture foam or cotton over the microphone entry. I used the same concept by taking a long "sheet" like piece and putting a cut and glued folded part over my computer microphone because I had a fan in my room. That stopped a lot of people from complaining about my fan.

Same concept applies to microphone booms that you see the professionals use while recording a television show outside. Look up solutions while on shore.

  • @vega1860 Remember about the "simplest solutions" motto. Trial and error works quite well, too. If I eel motivated enough I'll take a photo of my microphone foam cover and send you a link.
