@IronyIsGood If I remember right, it's open to interpretation. It's been a while since I read the source material, so I can't remember off hand how they treated it and Wikipedia isn't too helpful since the article about the book says one thing, and the article about the character says it's open to interpretation.
Man, the animation in this isn't very good, but the voice acting, character design, and script is incredible. A+ in spite of the choppy animation because a good story can make mediocre animation inconsequential.
Actually I should clarify...the animation is INCONSISTENT. There are scenes where the animation is good.
I am guessing that the animators who drew the keys were very skilled by the in-betweening was a rush job, except for a few scenes where the animation is pretty good quality. (Such as the one with the demon from the cauldron.)
I didn't like Magrat's voice either. I thought she wore mostly black, had next to no breasts (in fact, Pratchett uses the phrase "two peas on an ironing board" to describe them), and I thought the jewelry she wore was hand wrought silver, and isn't she supposed to have dark eyeliner on? I don't like the pink flower in her hair. She looks more like a hippie than a witch. I imagined her to be more new age goth.
I know she was vegan or something, but Pratchett describes her as wearing a ton of black eye liner and wearing silver occult jewelry and crystals. This just seems odd to me. Maybe I got the wrong impression. I'll have to read it again, fine by me :)
Did anybody else think Magrat was supposed to look different than this? Am I the only one?
I think the hippie look is quite suitable because in many ways margrat is like a hippie. She uses eyeliner but not pale, goth makeup. And she doesn't like wearing black. The failed attempt at goth is more Agnes' thing.
And yes, she wears flower and twigs in her hair, but for superstitious magic purposes. She plays being a witch by the book. It's not a hippie thing. If a witches manual or spellbook said "wear rosemary in your hair and a vile of creek water around your neck to ward off malicious intruders, she would do just that. Weatherwax and Ogg kinda play by their own rules and experiences. Magrat is a textbook witch, that's why she turns to the other two so much, she's in training. Not a hippie.
and all I'm saying is that the way margrat's been depicted in this cartoon is pretty accurate and true to the book, and a more goth-like look would not be appropriate.
I think that the book version of Lady Felmet's death is a bit better. The woodland creatures line up on her, she pulls a knife and charges them all, and presumably gets torn to shreds later.
But... it's made up for, in massive spades, by Lord Felmet's last scene. Gawd, he's such a wackjob, but it's so awesome!
So ... is Verence (The Fool) the son of the king or the son of the king's wife? That bit confuses me. Would that mean that Tom-John takes after the actress that was Fool's mother if he wasn't the king's son?
"That's what i thought, at first. But then Magrat says, 'but Verence was her husband. So... ohhh'. Does that mean that the queen cheated on the king, or did the king cheat on the queen?"
To answer your question, Magrat is kind of slow, the king cheated, else the kid woulden't be of royal blood since if the queen cheated it wouldn't of mattered.
I THINK that the text is actually right, and the queen cheated on the king with the previous Fool and gave birth to the current Fool/King Verence II. Even if under traditional rules, royal blood passes through the king only, the people of Lancre have never been very keen on those kinda rules and don't really care who his father was as long as he's on the throne and it all sounds legitimate.
Not to mention that's the kind of ass-backwards thing that Pratchett would do.
Actually, in the book, and later ones they talk about The Fool not actually being of royal blood, he was the son of the queen and the previous fool. But Lancre doesn't really care.
Based on the book, I'd say that they both the King and the Queen cheated on each other. So, either both Verence and Tom-John are the King's sons, or none are (the Fool's father was a very likable person and the King was away so often...).
Either way, everyone was happy in the end, so let's be glad there is no DNA on Discworld.
Thanks. I wish people were more enthusiastic about Discworld here in the States. The Hogswatch movie screamed "low budget" but I thoroughly enjoyed it nonetheless. Imagine what a Discworld movie could be like with the funding of some of the larger Hollywood flicks out there...
Sorry, I made a mistake, it's March 23rd, not 3rd. And yes, a Discworld movie with funding would be incredible!! But then, of course, thousands of people would jump on the bandwagon, which would lead to insane commercialism and merchandising and Rincewind stuffed dolls and all the rest, so I think it's better how it is now.
Terry pratchette once replied to a reporter on how much money he had, that he had enoght to stop discworld from becomeing films. He dislikes the idea of it being on a large scale, he just happy at making hes already strong cult following happy. Im just happy he like the tv version well enoght to let them make more.
I am soooo pleased you provided this. And now, can an American buy this on a DVD? The Hogfather is great but I can't buy it until its in a DVD format I can play in the states.
Hearing the wounderful Christopher Lee as Death make this show so worth watching.

@Koden The fool is the son of the previous fool and the queen.
He isn't descended from royalty.
(The witches and the real prince simply didn't tell anyone)
0:45 "and her majesty told me who his father was" (the previous fool)
0:57 "you know what they say: fools rush in while the king's away"
The fool who is now king of lancre is the illegitimate child of the queen and the former court jester.
He states near the beginning that his father was a jester.

Why do they Witches have West Country accents? Lancre is clearly based on (rural) Lancashire.
That said, they have made the fool from Liverpool- farcical.

I could have swore that in the book Granny just made up the Fool's royal blood and everybody just accepted it.
