  • I think I MIGHT be in the weird part of youtube again...

  • @BRyanS72 Wrong, this isn't the My Little Pony fan base.

  • Are you ever gonna find a washer like this some where? Where would you find one like this?

  • How many washers do you own, Sharkie?

  • @vanni9283 Just the 1990 at our regular home and this one at my bro's place. :)

  • @Sharkie626

Oh okay. I thought this one was yours too!

  • @vanni9283 Well it's sort of mine, I got it for my bro to ensure he got a true washer! heh.

  • where are you from?

  • @anczeljl New York

  • If you dont want all the electronics now, you have to buy a admiral, roper, inglis etc. they still have the direct drive gearboxes like this one. Its a shame how the government destroy all of the good stuff. Whirpool had a good design hear only complaint i have about the newer direct drives is they put cheaper couplings, pumps, motors etc so they fail a lot more. The first direct drives up into the early 90's you could easily get 20 years of trouble free service.

  • @BernardR30 Indeed. Though, if the time comes, I am going to start looking through the used markets, where washers still gave you FULL hot water and a warm rinse. Maybe you saw already but, in my vids, we have a Whirlpool from 1990 with 5 temperature selections and on that machine, the ONLY repair done to it was the agitator dogs back in 2002, everything else on that machine is original.

  • Most cases, the lid must be closed while running.

  • I watch these videos, because the sound of washing machines helps me to sleep. This extra long video is nice...

  • @RobGwisdala Absolutely!

  • @Sharkie626 it's a very nice washer i believe it could as well. i mean it's like massaging the cloths as it's going and then as it gets to the last and spins like crazy to get all the water out it's awsome. stain free and already ready to dry! so awsome.

  • WHY does it not gear into slow agitation before the spin cycle???

Mine would slow down agitation speed for about 3 minutes before it drains...

  • @gemini80204 This is one of the lower models ;)

  • @Sharkie626 It cant be! It has a bigger tub to wash... My old whirlpool washer was a lower model. Mine had a small wash tub, slightly smaller surgilator, it came with the optional fabric softener dispenser (CAP) and also the original WHIRLPOOL LOGO on the CAP as well. But it was definately the "lower model" before the taller ones came out.

It would wash fast speed throughout the wash cycle, pause for 2 seconds, then shift into low speed for about 3 minutes before the drain and spin cycle.

  • @gemini80204 I think by this point (2010), Whirlpool had done away with the smaller tubs and just kept it with the larger ones.

  • @gemini80204 The slow 4 minute potion of the main wash cycle was called the "Gentle Wash" portion of the cycle. The lower priced models didn't have this feature even though it was a large capacity machine.

  • @themaytagrepairman The slow agitation is worthless with a regular load. It's like using the gentle cycle on jeans.

  • @JSneaker Yeah, the only down side to this lower model is that it does not have a "true" delicate cycle, but that is not a problem as we do not have any delicates at that house that need washing. We did carefully think about that before buying this.

  • @JSneaker Have you seen the models that replaced the direct-drive. I'm a little iffy on them. What do you think of them?

  • @themaytagrepairman I will say, they are crap. A machine taking an hour or more do do ONE load is ridiculous. they have all these "fancy" electronic parts now that are no where near as reliable as the mechanical parts. Nothing starts "immediately" when you turn on the machine. The fill takes forever, and the agitation... oh god. I recently did a full load of jeans and khaki pants in our 1990 machine and they turned over okay. I Highly doubt that would wash that well in those new belt drives.

  • @themaytagrepairman (Continued) and without the timer, you have no idea how long into the cycle the machines is. Those little lights below where the timer SHOULD be, do not count. The lights only tell you what cycle it is on, but they do not tell you how far along they are in that certain cycle. Is it 5 minutes into the wash? is it 10 minutes into the wash? The good ol' mechanical timer shows you that, and the lid locking thing is so stupid, the mechanical lid switch beats that by a long shot.

  • @Sharkie626 i don't like them.

  • @themaytagrepairman hehe :D

  • @themaytagrepairman The slow agitation is worthless with a regular load. It's like using the gentle cycle on jeans.

  • @gemini80204 The slow 4 minute potion of the main wash cycle was called the "Gentle Wash" portion of the cycle. The lower priced models didn't have this feature even though it was a large capacity machine. The smaller capacity machines didn't sell as well as the large capacity machines did so they did away with them.

  • Lower models? lol...I thought you would have said higher models...actually, I wish that mine could do a full cycle on high agitation...sigh. Great video, great lighting. I wash both casual and formal clothes in mine and have never got a problem. I also have an old G.E. ramp style agitator machine WITH ONE SPEED - HIGH...and have never had a problem, after all, I don't wear lace.

  • @madlyderanged Oh yeah! I remember that comment you left in the GE Hydrowave video, lol that was great! Seriously, in 21 years we now have the other Whirlpool, it has not torn up anything!

  • Finally, a machine that gives you high agitation throughout the cycle; didn't knew that they came like this.

  • @madlyderanged Yeah you have to go with the slightly lower models to have that.

  • Great water pressure, boy.

  • @madlyderanged heh, thanks for that! :) Though, it isn't really a surprise since the machine is in the basement.

  • what model number is this one the 5200 or 5100 since there was no speed shift i think its supposed to be a 2 speed machine not so ????

  • @Skreem2 This model is WTW5200VQ.

  • Nice video, interesting that there is no speed shift during wash. What is that contraption it drains into?.

  • @dualactionsurgilator It is a pump, since the house drain pipe is higher than the washer, it has to be pumped into the drain pipe for it to drain properly.

Oh, about the no speed shift, this model, if you want to give them a level pertaining to the number of features, this would be more or less a level 2 model (out of 3), this one only has just the fast speed during the washing, which I am more than okay with, in fact, I tend to like it that way.

  • @Sharkie626 Interesting drain mechanism. As far as the speed shift goes I would agree with you. I tended to like the Kenmore direct drives for this reason. You get more time of full action and it is easier on the machine to continue on high agitation for the full time. The advantage to the speed shift however is that you have less wear-out and shredding of fabrics. I have not found a significant difference in todays sturdy fabrics though.

  • @dualactionsurgilator The direct drive Kenmore were great. What I didnt like about them though is that the Kenmore agitator seemed to be too low height-wise compared to the Whirlpool agitator, and also the Kenmore's upper agitator did not move forward (clockwise) as well as the Whirlpool agitator.

  • @Sharkie626 Actually the top part of the agitator in the Whirlpool was more for asthetics and to house the softner dispenser. In the Kenmore you had a removable dispenser that snapped on to the top of the auger. They also used the same racheting mechanism. The exception being the Dual Action Plus which had a curved auger fin which created more drag. I switched the Whirlpool style agitator out of a Kitchenaid Model when it broke and put in a Kenmore one. It worked the same.

  • @dualactionsurgilator Ahh okay, that explains the forward movement. I do find those vintage Kitchenaid agitators (the green ones) quite fancy. Ya know, with our 1990 Whirlpool, I have thought of getting the agitator cap since we never use the fabric softener dispenser for it, not the most necessary thing, but just an idea.

  • @Sharkie626 You can certainly switch the dispenser out for a cap. As the agitator is the same for both applications. My favorite though, is the chrome rimmed KA softner dispenser.

  • @dualactionsurgilator Oh for sure, when I saw that KA dispenser I was like "woah, now THAT is cool!"
