@raith2006 theres people who just need more time to get used to it than others. I've been doing it since i was a kid, and kids dont tend to have flexibility problems. Also, most japanese people are used to this. This is discomfortable usually to grown people who have never done this. Its not only about technique, tho it can help.
i watched japanese movie historical backgroud of which was around 1600,it seems japanese at that time had to seiza all the time, didnt they feel uncomfortable?
or if u r used to do it from little boy, then u feel it comfortable?
@WiteRainbeau lol yeah it take about a month depending on how often you do it. Luckily for me I never had any problems sitting like this,I started at age 24. When I first start my biggest problem was my feet would go numb or a tingly feeling would get in them.
@nasurdan heh, the numb feet are my only problem. I can sit in seiza for about 15 minutes now but then my feet starts to go numb. I wonder if it gets better over time.
@msourada Heh two month ago I twisted my knee, so now I am back where I started. I can't sit like that any more. The numb feeling is because it cut off some of the blood flow from the feet, therefore it not wise to keep them like that for long once they go numb. By stretching you legs daily you can reduce the numbing feeling. I think after 3 to 4 weeks you would be able to sit like that no problem. I think also it depends on your body type.
@WiteRainbeau i know that problem too well :-( what helped me is actively training to sit :-D
for example start off with sitting for a minute. the next day sit for two minutes. and ignore the pain :P
and so on.
try to distract yourself like watch a movie or read the newspaper while sitting. right now ive come to be able to sit for 10 minutes! im sure itll work for you just as well
@masterharis I suspect that since Japan was a warring nation for hundreds of year, this type of sitting reduced mobility. Thus reducing the possibility of a quick attack.
I just started kendo and we had a Shinto ceremony, we had to sit for about 15 minutes, than were allowed to sit cross-leged, before sitting for another 15 minutes. i almost died ;)
Fortunately its not just us gaijin that find seiza painful - most Japanese kids will have trouble standing up after sitting in this position for a while, and will hobble around for a while afterwards just like me!
Hm i tried to sit in seiza now for the first time, i have too sa it feels comfortable the first minute, but then it feels like my blood is beeing pressed out of m feet. Will i get used to this or am i sitting wrong?
Good idea, sit in seiza when you play video games/watch tv etc.
The feeling goes away from your knees down, no matter how used you are to it. After a while you will be able to take the pain more, just try not to think about it.
If you want to get used to seiza you should just sit in seiza whenever you can at home, start on carpet or a pillow , i couldnt sit in seiza for 2 minutes when i first went to japan but it only took my 3 months to get to the pount where i can sit in seiza for however long i need to, it helps to practice, ive been doing kendo for a year, if you have to you can slide the legs of your hakama under your ankles to kinda give you padding but then you have to fold the pleats and iron them often
LOL I feel your pain. I did judo in Japan and couldn't do seiza (luckily we weren't sitting long) Now I'm doing kendo back in the US and seiza's still really tough. :-( Try sitting seiza with a pillow while watching TV or something, it's helped me get used to the position a little. Thanks for posting this! ;-)
I feel sorry for him, I still haven't got use to it. And I've been doing Kendo for seven months!! The pain!! Not long ago we had grading at my dojo that went for four hours, and one guy (like me - a big/tall guy!) tried to stand up after sitting for bout two hours... And he fell over cause he lost all feeling to his legs!! Not funny, but I'm fearful of doing the same thing at my next grading!!
i have got used to it a bit, ive being doing aikido for about one and a half years and i can only sit in seiza for about 4-5 mins, by then it kills, but i did fractior my leg a while ago and it starts to hurt just that one leg ... so maybe that could have summit too do with it , anyway, seiza is torture O=
wait i dont understand. I sit in seiza all the time am i supposed to not let my butt touch my heels or do i have to support sitting weight with the knees?
Yes, getting into the position is easy, but if you are used to siting in a chair or indian-style, the front thigh muscles aren't used to that type of strain. At least that's what I have trouble with.
I don't see why this is so hard, I don't feel any discomfort at all when I do this, maybe you don't have the right technique?
