@rivariad technically he is a baritone with superior technique, in his earlier days, as he strained his vocal chords he lost the ability to hit lower notes, which nowdays he can hit again
I thought to myself, let me search for a Soundgarden playlist that hopefully has this song in it. Well, not only did I find a playlist, but this exact performance is the very first track!! SCORE!!!
@crazeerenegade didn't mean to be sexist or anything, just ended up typing what turned out to be a very obscure way of showing my appreciation for his singing voice. I meant no offence :)
my fav performance of BTW. chris's is just astonishing. also, this is mislabeled. the correct date and location is August 18 1993 at the CNE Grandstand in Toronto.
Some people have no idea what there talking about, chris has to be the best vocalist ever for the fact he is baritone singer! Yet he could do this with so much power and to get so high, and check out the ending to smokestack lightning, its outstanding!! GOD!
To some of the previous commenters: Actually, I don't think the high powerful screams did much, if any, damage to his voice, since they are obviously in very well supported head voice. What tired him out, I would bet, were the mid-screams like on "it's precious" at the beginning and the many "deep"-s at the end, because they sound to me to be in pulled chest voice, which can really screw up a voice for days ahead.
Is this the same show that they took Jesus Christ Pose from for Telephantasm? If so then a) The full concert must be on record somewhere and b) I want it. Yesterday.
If every human being could scream this high pitch like Chris, wouldn't be bad music. Or even music, because the world would go deaf and all the glasses would break up!
Ever see the old Bugs Bunny cartoons where Daffy gets like his beak blasted onto his head? That's me right now, every time Chris breaks into one of those screams...
Just watched a more recent live version to compare to this. Chris sounds great in the newer one...but holy shit he sounds like a god in this one. The power and intense vibrato on his screams is completely insane. He still hits the notes in the newer one but not with nearly as much conviction....it probably screws his voice up to sing like he used to like that.
Best thing about seeing Chris sing/scream is his face doesnt show a scream. He just looks as if he could be talking normally to the crowd..meanwhile he's reaching unbelieveable notes and volume. Plus he's fucking HOT to look at....
this is definitely the best version of BTW i've heard......but he still killed it two days ago in Philly! the high notes just won't ever be quite as pure as they used to be.......i recommend "Nothing to Say" also....check it out people
Saw them last week in NJ. One of the highlights was this song, which I think sounded even better than this performance. His voice is still amazing and as good as ever even after all see years.
@kurtkosher I saw them too in Toronto. I have to say Chris must have some magical power to keep his voice like that and do that to it all the time! The only time he proved he was human was when he blew his voice back in the late 90s....but man did he get it back....I was pretty much in tears, with jaw dropped to the ground, hearing him sing this again. WOW
Best version of Beyond the Wheel. Possibly one of the best live vocal performances ever... Holy crap, Cornell's natural singing talent is absolutely UNREAL.
@zombie100379 saying things like that really makes you seem like a fanboi, which you obviously are. If you keep saying things like this on a soundgarden video, people WILL give you shit so I suggest you just don't say things like this.

@punkstrummer101rs Yeah, I used to think the exact same. I think that when Layne was in his prime when he was alive, they were equal at the very least. With Layne's snarl to a scream voice suiting the genre slightly better. Chris is very versatile as a singer though.
My body gets that buzz everytime I watch/listen to Soundgarden live... Chris Cornell is the best fucking vocalist ever... Nothing will change that. Simply one of a kind.

Man, effin killer. Cornell used to rival Halford & Dickinson in terms of vocal range. IMO all these guys were so much better in this band than their later projects. Audioslave is boring music, and Matt has to be bored drumming for PJ- sounds like it too.
@Badfish228 As a teen Pearl Jam was my favorite, but then they started making albums that made "Vitalogy" seem rockin' in comparison. Those first few albums I still jam daily, but I'd have to say Matt aint the only thing wrong with PJ. They simply do not rock in the least anymore.
@oneaware As a guy who's seen them 5 times in the last 2 years, I can say you couldn't be any more wrong when you say "they simply do not rock in the least anymore".
Vitalogy doesn't need to be compared to anything for it to sound "rockin". It rocked like fuck when it came out, and it still does. The three albums that followed Vitalogy are every bit as good as those first 3.
They're completely different albums though. A total 180 in musical direction. If they don't appeal to you, your loss.
w/ all due respect to Halford and Bruce(two of the greats), they never had this kind of power in their upper register......Dio comes closer IMO to matching Cornell in his prime in terms of sheer power....
I can sing pretty good. I sang this song once. Once was all I could sing it. I could barely sing anything right after that. Chris Cornell is not human. He was designed in a lab as the perfect musical instrument.
I hate those morons who ridicule you for thinking Soundgarden is better than Nirvana. It's not even close, SOUNDGARDEN blows Nirvana outta the water. Better vocals, better guitar, better fills on drums... there is no competition. Just had to come out and say that...
@italianstallion30 apples to oranges my friend, apples to oranges. 2 entirely different styles, just thrown together in the same category by radio jocks.
Yeah, it's funny cause I just heard Black Reign for the first time a little while ago and the first thing I thought was "I hope this guy can still pull off these notes"....my 2nd thoght was, "I'll bet they're not playing this live, cause he probably can't hit the notes.....and then I go on Youtube and I saw him pull it off with ease on this new reunion tour. I am soooo glad cause I could'nt understand why he would'nt pull off these vocal performances on his solo stuff. Can't wait for new stuff.
I am really born in the wrong era. I can't imagine how stoked his wife must feel every day.. to be married to a talent like him. No one can compare to him. The voice of the angel and the devil..
Was this recorded in Sturgis, SD? During Sturgis Bike Week maybe? Wow, if it was this is the closest I've ever been to Chris and the guys, I was like 150 miles away and was two years old. haha.
@ericlord821 Of course. Buckley's ok, but beyond having a nice falsetto and some good versatility he's not up to much. Cornell has much more power and control. His technique is much more highly developed.
@artisthespoonman I'm sure. I didn't mean to start some debate on here. It was more like a promotional thing because I love Buckley, and I'm amazed at the amount of people that don't him. In terms of vocal talent, they both have their own style which were very different from each other. Cornell had more power because he used his chest voice and belting technique. Buckley used more of a head voice and better breath control. Both are very versatile, and both are my top 5 favorite vocalists.
@artisthespoonman don't know mate. I'd probably put Layne from AiC before Chris. Layne just had ridiculous range and insane power in his voice, still, not sayin Chris is bad - they BOTH top and shit over any other male singer out there.
@Audioslave3 seems you haven't gotten through Layne's work yet. I mean really, the guy was able to sing everything and do it nicely. listen to Junkhead (demo), Frogs, It ain't like that, Rooster, Sunshine, Got me wrong (unplugged), I can't remember, What the hell have I, Am I inside by Alice in Chains and Long gone day, River of deceit by Mad Season. Then come back here and tell me the guy didn't have range.
@EmperorOfOhio he doesn't "have trouble" at all with low parts. look up the showbox performance of beyond the wheel, his low range is way better then before. it really vibrates and is really thick.
not saying eddie is a bad singer, he is cool to in his own right.
@omegalen just tell me if chris would sing 'rooster'... Chris is a great singer with a powerful voice but the range of Layne's voice is much more wider.
@mattso89 just tell me if layne would sing beyond the wheel? same question. Chris would make hos own version of it like he did with "betterman" from pearl jam. it won't sounds at good as layne did it i have to admit that. layne is also one of my favorite singers you know, but to say his range is superior to Chris' is wrong.
@omegalen whoa, dont misinterpret me. Chris is great, definitely top 3 of my all time male singers but lets not jump into thinking his vocal range was that diverse. ever heard of the song Hunger Stike by temple of the dog? you see, the point is, Chris couldn't pull off the low parts in the song and Eddie had to step in and do it for him. Chris is as unique as sonsofbitches can get, yet he's famous for his amazing high scream. he has troubles with low parts. i wouldn't call that 'range'
@EmperorOfOhio Speaking of misinterpretations, if you actually listen to the two vocal parts of that song, it's not hard to notice that they're singing the exact same notes. Chris is known for his range because it spans four octaves, and no matter where on the spectrum that is, that is still a fuckload of range.
I have to say that the best vocal time period Chris had was in the Bad Motorfinger era. He was at his very vocal peak, those fucking screams were the shit. Hope they make a world wide tour !!
Description says '93, but, that can't be right. They were recording in '93, and unless I'm mistaken, had time only for the show that year in Toronto with Blind Melon and Pearl Jam as support for Neil Young with Booker T. & the MG's. This sounds exactly like the version that KCMU used to play, along with live versions of "Hunted Down" and "Get On The Snake", as far back as 1990.
@Fakename70 The way I remeber it they did quite a few shows with PJ and Niel Young that summer, Unfortunately when the Niel young and PJ came to the Gorge it was Blind melon,,,oh no that was GREAT too, just wish Soundgarden was there too.
Ah, you're right. According to Wikipedia it was a 10-day tour. I remember when the tour hit the Gorge because it was the same weekend as Bumbershoot and I was watching Mudhoney's set at the Coliseum hoping for a Green River reunion.
@rivariad technically he is a baritone with superior technique, in his earlier days, as he strained his vocal chords he lost the ability to hit lower notes, which nowdays he can hit again

Buckley used more of a head voice and better breath control. Both are very versatile, and both are my top 5 favorite vocalists.

@artisthespoonman THANK YOU! Someone agrees with me!

@artisthespoonman don't know mate. I'd probably put Layne from AiC before Chris. Layne just had ridiculous range and insane power in his voice, still, not sayin Chris is bad - they BOTH top and shit over any other male singer out there.
EmperorOfOhio 8 months ago
@EmperorOfOhio Ridiculous range? No way! Power? Yes but still not the power Chris had.
Audioslave3 8 months ago
@Audioslave3 seems you haven't gotten through Layne's work yet. I mean really, the guy was able to sing everything and do it nicely. listen to Junkhead (demo), Frogs, It ain't like that, Rooster, Sunshine, Got me wrong (unplugged), I can't remember, What the hell have I, Am I inside by Alice in Chains and Long gone day, River of deceit by Mad Season. Then come back here and tell me the guy didn't have range.
EmperorOfOhio 8 months ago
@EmperorOfOhio he doesn't "have trouble" at all with low parts. look up the showbox performance of beyond the wheel, his low range is way better then before. it really vibrates and is really thick.
not saying eddie is a bad singer, he is cool to in his own right.
omegalen 8 months ago
@EmperorOfOhio i don't think you watched this full video dude, just the intro i guess.
get you'r ears repaired and play it from 1:23. You can almost hear his voice explode. FULL of vibrato, control range, and POOOOOOOWER.
Layne was a great singer, but didn't have this range at all.
omegalen 8 months ago
@omegalen just tell me if chris would sing 'rooster'... Chris is a great singer with a powerful voice but the range of Layne's voice is much more wider.
mattso89 8 months ago
@mattso89 just tell me if layne would sing beyond the wheel? same question. Chris would make hos own version of it like he did with "betterman" from pearl jam. it won't sounds at good as layne did it i have to admit that. layne is also one of my favorite singers you know, but to say his range is superior to Chris' is wrong.
omegalen 8 months ago
@omegalen whoa, dont misinterpret me. Chris is great, definitely top 3 of my all time male singers but lets not jump into thinking his vocal range was that diverse. ever heard of the song Hunger Stike by temple of the dog? you see, the point is, Chris couldn't pull off the low parts in the song and Eddie had to step in and do it for him. Chris is as unique as sonsofbitches can get, yet he's famous for his amazing high scream. he has troubles with low parts. i wouldn't call that 'range'
EmperorOfOhio 8 months ago
@EmperorOfOhio nowadays when he sings live, he sometimes sings both the low parts and the highest parts
Lawldudz 8 months ago
@EmperorOfOhio Speaking of misinterpretations, if you actually listen to the two vocal parts of that song, it's not hard to notice that they're singing the exact same notes. Chris is known for his range because it spans four octaves, and no matter where on the spectrum that is, that is still a fuckload of range.

I have to say that the best vocal time period Chris had was in the Bad Motorfinger era. He was at his very vocal peak, those fucking screams were the shit. Hope they make a world wide tour !!

@zerochance01 says in the description :)

@zerochance01
Fakename70 1 year ago
@Fakename70 The way I remeber it they did quite a few shows with PJ and Niel Young that summer, Unfortunately when the Niel young and PJ came to the Gorge it was Blind melon,,,oh no that was GREAT too, just wish Soundgarden was there too.
dsmallwood2112 1 year ago
@dsmallwood2112
Ah, you're right. According to Wikipedia it was a 10-day tour. I remember when the tour hit the Gorge because it was the same weekend as Bumbershoot and I was watching Mudhoney's set at the Coliseum hoping for a Green River reunion.
