Not just the intro but the fact that the narrator uses a half-hearted impression of rod serling throughout the documentary strikes me as very tasteless. I couldn't watch this.
I just read a article on google about him the article said he died in 1974 im only 30 but when I watch episodes of tz he looks young like he is in his late forties or early fifties how did he die.
I am so happy you posted this! @Missvivicide You are not the only person obsessed with Mr. Serling. He is one of the GREATS! Top three for television in my book.
What i love most about Twilight Zone is that Rod Serling left each episode half way done and i'm sure that if he was alive he would do another 30 more minutes continuation to each episode. To me that's just BRILLIANT and AMAZING. But that would never happen, and if some other well known writer or director would try they would fail to their misery.
I love these comments.. I thought I was the only weirdo who is obsessed with Rod Serling. The comments prove otherwise X] I've read so many of his biographies, seen many documentaries, that I could be a Rod Serling encyclopedia.
I can't wait to get my Rod Serling portrait tattoo done <3
@Missvivicide It is so rad to see so many people who still appreciate Rod Serlings contribution to the public consciousness and television and film as an art form. Did you get his portrait tatted yet?
this was back when television was still an artists' medium instead of the mind-numbing schlock purveyor it is today. Twilight Zone is arguably the only good show TV has ever produced.
This documentary may be good otherwise, but I dislike its beginning. To parody Serling's Twilight Zone prefaces while depicting his sadly premature death on the operating table is an almost shocking breech of propriety. Really tasteless.
@dnggitg "Tasteless"?? Are you kidding? Serling would have LOVED it --- this is EXACTLY how a bio doc for Rod Serling should be done: Twilight Zone style!
When we realize this is back to the moment when dear Roddy was on his last gasp, we pay paticular attention. Did this man get to realize his dreams?
It's a heartbreaking shame that he lived to the mere age of 50. But I thin living got to be too stressful for him. Perhaps he chose to go. He had enough.
The man who wanted to be remembered for his writing. Who wanted a legacy. He set the bar for quality on TV, wouldn't you say?
Being a huge Serling fan and Twilight Zone nut as far back as I remember [i'm 53] I was taken aback when I watched the movie 'Dead of Night"I guess rod's family had hoped this one stay buried.Released in 1945 it has a leastt3 of rod's story's from TZ. The Mirror-Ceaser and Me-/the Dummy and the morgue one''room for one more honey' Shame! shame! -shame! Rod .Give credit where ceidit is due. Don't rip people off. God Knew!
Loving this documentary series on Rod Serling ... who, by the way, was and is ... "too incredible to be real, too real to be a dream". (Rod's words from one of his television TZ narrations, applicable to one of his stories, but, for me, applicable to him as well. For sure).
Thanks again for the documentary...I know I'll be downloading this to the old HD...i would say all kind of things about Rod, but if there are people watching this they already know everything I could possibly say about him. One of those rare humans that come along once or twice in a century, I feel lucky to have been witness to his works!
WOW! Is that a childhood Mickey Dolenz in that scene? Yes, "American Masters" is awesome, and now doubt, this will be taken right off as soon as PBS finds out you've posted it! ;)
@sfsindee Thanks for posting sfsindee. Serling was unquestionably one of the creative giants of "early" television that left a mark (not only) on television, but film, theatre, and screen writing as well. I was a kid when The Twilight Zone first started airing on CBS. All the kids in our neighborhood were talking about the new show on television that delt more with concepts than dramatic acting. It truely effected us little guys and I believe shaped us as we became adults.
Rod is was a genius and a great moral man. War hero too! Great example of golden age American dreamer made good. Love all that nostalgia stuff probably more cos im english!
What makes Rod Sterling even better than yesterday is today. So many episodes were about women, changing their bodies to conform. The doctor in one episode quotes "2000", as the ephiphanal year. Maybe it is or was.

I'm a Serling fan - I'm a parody fan. However, I didn't care for the intro. there's something terribly distasteful about the intro. using his death.
(Today, smokers are the new lepers so perhaps it's to be expected?)
This is still a *must* see for all Serling fans, though. (Not the intro. - the rest.)
I can still watch episodes of the original 'Twilight Zone' and find them as refreshing as when I first saw them on TV as a kid (re-runs).
