TL's french is not that natural, she has great pronunciation but when she sings you can tell she's not a native and has the antics of a vietnamese singer. When BY sings with her western european stage presence, you can imagine she's a native in some sort of french speaking country, despite her Indochinoise accent. The fact that Bach Yen has lived in france for so many years really instills more frenchness and it shows in her speaking, singing, and antics. She's a true pioneer and a legend.
oh my god. this is so awsome. Its so nice to see vietnamese music performed spontaneously and improvised. Does anyone know where or when this took place? It looks like some charming bar in Paris?
the lady with the hat is none other than the legendary bach yen. she's just having fun with her audience, this was her show here in california not too long ago. bach yen is the pioneer chanteuse of international pop music for vietnamese folks who paved the way for so many others. without bach yen, there probably would have never been thanh lan, julie, khanh ha, etc. so if she wants to clown around on stage, she's earned it.
just to prove how big of a Bach Yen fan I am and how fascinated I am w/ the cultural history of Vietnamese Performing Arts... Bach Yen actually emigrated to France in the early Sixties from Vietnam and has been a citizen of France for over 40 years. According to her bio, she did live and work in the US for the entire decade of the 1970s but ultimately returned to Paris in 1984. The reason why she is so admired by Vietnamese folks is because she was and still is the only Vietnamese singer to...
have been signed with a global record co. (Polydor) after already establishing a name and career for herself in Vietnam. She wasn't the first Vietnamese to enter the international music scene (There were already Bebe Hong Suong, the big band singer who had gained fame in Belgium and became known throughout Europe since the Fifties, and Tiny Yong (Thien Hong nee) who was among France's top ye-ye singers in the early Sixties) but both had left Vietnam at an early age and started their careers...
Bach Yen, on the other hand, was already a major star in her native Vietnam but took the gamble of broadening her career abroad. It isn't so pointless to compare Thanh Lan with her, because BY & ThL both share similar career backgrounds- both had learned French while in VN & sang in French perfectly before either one had lived abroad. (so the fact that BY now lives in France and ThL never has didn't matter then or even now) BY's naturalness when singing in French is her god-given talent...
That has nothing to do with pronunciation or language skills. Matter of fact, ThL's pronunciation is more French-like whereas BY has a noticeable Indochinoise accent. But that's part of BY's charm; besides the French find accents appealing. The difference btw the 2 is that BY has voice expression of a storyteller when she sings in French & ThL concentrates too much on pronunciation which takes away any "naturalness" to the song. You get what I'm saying?
wow, what's a sharp, clear and clean argument about the two wonderful Thanh Lan and BachYen. I m a young listener 35 from Montreal Quebec, but totally agree with all your points.

LOL. I couldn't tell it was Thanh Lan at first. She looks so French now, and I don't see the mole above her lips. I guess it flew away LOL .
Nice to see Thanh Lan cheerful again. Thanks for posting.

Thanh Lan doesn't sing in french as naturally as Bach Yen. Like Lassley greatly puts it, w/out Bach Yen, there would be no Thanh Lan.
