  • I love this game, but its impossible to beat lol.

  • The gbc-version is now on 3ds!!!

  • I always felt Sunsofts Fester's Quest was programmed using the overhead levels of Blaster Master as an "engine". Funny how one game is so great and classic, but the other's a turd.

  • I loved this game...never finished it...but I do remember the novel that came out with when the game did based on....well the game was the first book I read all the way through that wasn't someting that was a school assinment for me to read ...

  • I never beat it

  • for some reason I thought this game required the power glove...

  • Wow I'm a huge NES fan (Genesis too) but I somehow missed this one. I've got a new game to collect! Thanks Mark.

  • i got this game for 4.99 , i love it :D

  • Dang, I never played the game but I read the book. It made me want to play it so bad.

  • Blaster Master was and is one of my all-time NES favorites as well. I remember when I was younger I would get stuck on the level 5 boss too. Now when I'm older I can beat the entire game, though.

  • @bexarath I never did finish this game when I was young either; and much like U, I'd like another crack at it. Just curious; how were you able to play & complete it now? is it available via download through the wii or something??

  • @judaschongo Yeah, I downloaded it on my Wii via Virtual Console.

  • WOOOOOOOOOOOW!!!!!

I DON'T KNOW HOW I CAN FORGET THIS AWSOME GAME!!!.

I CAN'T BELIEVE HOW I NEVER CAN REMEMBER THIS GAME.COME TO ME A BIG FASH BACK OLD MEMORIES OF MY CHILDHOOD. I WANNA CRYYYYYY :(

  • I finally beat this great game.. way better than any of the sequels

  • Great game, sad part even tho its a classic, i picked up my copy for 7 buck, castlevania was going for 45 bucks, i got my copy at a classic game store, and it had Bart vs the space mutants at top shelf and journey to sillius at the bottom, along with poor old blaster master, they weren't ever going to see the light of day, so i bought them, and haven't been happier about a game bargain.

  • you beat that crab by fully powering up your gun so that it shoots a rapid fire wave beam that destroys all of the bubble things the crabs shoots at you and hits its eyes, so you stand at the bottom of the screen stepping a little to the left and right as the crab moves, killing all the bubbles and hitting its eyes

  • i bet this is the reason metal slug exists

  • 2:08 METROIDS!!!!

  • the song at 4:05 is the same song on another nes game and its called freedom force

  • Damnit!! Get up and fight that crab, you bitch! haha

  • HD stands for heavy duty!

  • For something that claims to be in HD, why does this only allow 360p? lol

  • I enjoyed your review until your last little bit where you swore and my kid was in the room thanks for nothing!

  • @iapastordave He'll hear it one day, better now then later I always say.

  • CGRHD: Now in 360p!

  • I love this game. en mis tiempos era muy dificil adquirir juegos asi que habia que alquilarlo en una tienda de peliculas =P por ende gaste lo que en realidad costaria como nuevo jejeje pero valio la pena. es muyyyy bueno.

  • I'm gonna get this game on the Virtual Console at some point.

  • I used to fuckin have this game our nintendo took a dump when i was 5 and i could always remember that first boss but i could never find the game cause i never knew the name. damn it feels good to finally rediscover this game

  • For~A~Fully~Working~Microsoft~Point_Code~Generator_View~My-Channel

  • This game gave me multiple panic attacks as a kid.

  • @xymox007 U & I both! LOL I never did finish this game; however I did get pretty far. And was also pleased to read on wikipedia that a common complaint was the difficulty.

  • There is a sequel to this game on the Genesis, buuuuuut it sucks.

  • Spot on review.

I liked level 2 alot, oh and yes I remeber the "crab guy" boss, the hardest boss in the game.

  • hey mate, hope you still check these comments! Have you heard whether the version on Virtual Console (i don't have a NES at the moment) is a good port? I love most ports there, but some are bad, like the arcade version of Ninja Gaiden which has a tiny little aspect ratio. Most of the ones for Nintendo's systems are awesome, but just wondering if you'd heard.

  • OMG flashbacks!! I can't believe I forgot about this game!! Downloading now!!

  • I remember craveing the hell out of this game, like 20 years ago? im 27 now, lol, very very fun game... Right up there with paperboy/contra/wizards&warriors/mario etc etc....

  • @xPREDICTIONx I loved wizards and warriors!! Hope it comes to the VC!!

  • This game seems to share a bit with Zelda, Metroid, and Megaman. Hell, Sophia's design reminds me a bit of Mass Effect's Mako.

  • Think I was the only person to beat this game. Lol

  • Dude you sound like Seth Rogan.

  • I do adore this old nes game, truly a great classic.

I liked the ps1 game they made too, not quite as fun as the nes, but not a bad game all in all, still the nes game is a game to go back to again and again. I would love to see a hd remake of this game to give next generation players a chance to play this classic with a standard of visuals they're more used to.

  • The controlling in overhead mode I think i'ts a little bit too sensitive!

  • one of the hardest games ever made for the NES era. i remember always giving up on this game cause of how hard it was.

  • BEST GAME EVER! PERIOD!

  • @PrimalFearScape this video is not fail! You're fail

  • @PrimalFearScape Dude, that was a fail comment, get laid soon.

  • @PrimalFearScape not a classic gamer huh?

  • Just discovered this by playing the amazing flash game Super Mario Bros Crossover, Sophia III just made it into the game. I think i'll give Blaster Master a try.

  • @caioenzo You shoul... wait! You MUST give it a try

  • The pre-web days where great. Good games, and so much variety. Now it's all football, icehockey and fps -_-

  • wow the best time never come back

  • Sunsoft recycled a lot of sound effects from this game in Fester's Quest, some of the bosses seem similar as well.

  • This would be an instant-buy on the Wii's VC for me if it weren't for the lack of a save/password feature. Knowing how terrible I am at video games, I'd probably be staring at the Title Screen after 2 minutes. There's just no way that I could possible beat a tough game like this without a password system, let alone get past the first area...

  • @TheGameSquid

Virtual console releases actually have a "suspend" feature, so you can at least shut the console off and resume from where you left off. Think of it as pausing your game until you come back to it. It deletes the save state when you start the game up again. It's basically like putting your psp or ds on suspend.

  • I love this game so much. Hands down my favorite game on the NES, no question whatsoever.

  • @MikeReiner what? that last sentence didnt make sense "whatsoever"

  • They did remake Blaster Master for the playstation. Called Blaster Master: Blasting Again. And you play as the main characters son. It's extremely cheap on amazon all you blaster master fans. :-)

  • as soon as you said "this seems like a genesis game rather than an nes game" my exact responce was "......What are you saying!!!!???"

  • "there were areas you couldnt get to 'till you got the next upgrade for your.... 'truck'.."(3:51) lol, you represent the fans well even to say that-- it's a truck, or is it a tank? :)

  • I never played this game back when it was new, but I've played it since then, and it's a really good game, but hard... like all old games.

  • Sunsoft games excelled in terms of graphics and sound! I challenge you to name one that doesn't have a killer soundtrack or graphics!

  • @iamspider Mega Man.

  • Sunsoft made some great nes games. The first two that come to mind are super spy hunter and spy hunter.

  • We are all still waiting for a Part 2!

  • MAAANN I LOVE THIS GAME, STILL WISH I HAD IT. THANK YOU SUNSOFT. I wish they would make a version for playstation just like they did for NES.

  • @GodsAvengR They actually had a Blaster Master game on the PSone; tvandlust has reviewed it :)

  • this is one of the greates games ever in my opinion...the opening music blew me away when i was a kid...so simple but so danm atmospheric

  • wow.. this brings me back!

  • Get up and fight that crab, you bitch! lol

  • This and Faxanadu were my favorite NES games. I used to play them all day long as a kid. So many memories.

  • thank god for the konami code or i would have never beaten this game

  • @kirbyfan4 what konami code?? I played this as a kid & it totally frustrated the hell out of me! I remember getting very far but not finishing :(

  • love it !! the best game on 8 bits !..

  • i've had this game for a while... never understood it until today.... cause i bought it in a famicom lot and there were too many games. brought back that 8 bit nostalgic feel, and i always remember this game getting high ratings but i couldn't figure out why.

  • I love this game, +10

  • I wish I had that tank on Fallout 3

  • For those curious about the plot wackiness, it was actually completely overhauled for the localized release. The original Jap version has some convoluted intergalactic war plot. The game play is virtually identical.

  • I have a sudden urge to dig around my yard and see if there is a hover tank buried down there.

  • I would never put yard work above blaster master unless I needed a break from Blaster Master

  • I still say that Metal Storm is the best looking game on NES

  • tried this today for the first time.. man i have missed a lot of awesome

  • I think with some bosses, there is a secret with it.

if you hit them with a grenade and pause it while the effects are still on, it acts like you're still hitting it.

I'm not sure which bosses it works for though.

  • @NestorV yep yep I do remember that feature!! my frustration was that i never finished it as a kid; i got pretty far but that always frustrated the fuck out of me! LOL

  • Ok, I sat down and played it on NesteDC SE (I refuse to play it on a pc emulator). Yes it rocks. It's a very deep game. My bad for my previous comment.

  • I read the Worlds of Power book for Blaster Master long before played the game. Knowing the full story behind Sofia 3 and that girl Eve who is the actual owner/pilot of Sofia, and who helps the kid Jason find his froggy, etc etc. I remember finding that book in our school library in 6th grade, along with the Metal Gear book, which I also read before actually playing any of the Metal Gear games. Reading is fun!

  • FX nine released a novel of this game, it makes awesome reading! we had a book club in school and I actually ordered it, I mean what a better way to get kids to read? :D

  • I swear this looks 16-bit.

You cannot tell me its 8-bit.

I mean it. This is too awesome to be 8-bit.

You have to kill Froggy? Awwww.

  • omg! this game was the first game i ever played on my nintendo... i never finished it though. because my nintendo break and then i sell all my games. But this game was my favorite

  • 09:42 - FTW

  • My first game experience was probably some old Commodore 64 game... This game makes me regret that, holy shit.

Very reminiscent of the Metroid games. I'm downloading blaster master right THIS GODDAMN SECOND.

  • ah so that's level 4

  • DAMMIT! GET UP AND FIGHT THAT CRAB YOU B*TCH! Lol!

  • Man, this game was tough. Now all I want to do is leave work, drink beer, and play Blaster Master. Damn you, Classic Game Room.. Damn you.

  • @milesj72781 Haha! my sentiments exactly

  • Of all things, I bought this impulsively at a thrift store for $3(!!!) today. I now see I made an excellent choice I will not regret.

  • This game... it really is one of the all time greatest, and clearly a top 10 on the NES list. It is a real shame that blaster master 2 (genesis) was so much worse. It is note quite "metroid great", but almost. And anyone who enjoyed metroid or zelda 2 will most likely love this game.

  • Great review perfect ending

  • Sophia's a "truck", really? C'mon man, you know better. Sophia is a TANK!

Great review for a GREAT game! I still have my original cartridge. It has about 1000 hours logged on it.

  • @bondomedia Tanks don't have wheels...at least not like that,

  • Oh this game was so awesome. So revolutionary for it's time.

  • this game gave me the creeps. very creepy

  • lol.. This is no review, its just a video where the game is shown and everything is spoiled -.-

I already beaten the game, and I loved every bit of it :D

And there was a sequel to SegaGenesis that sucked, and a third game on the Ps1, that sucked even more.

Cant wait for Overdrive comes to EU!

  • GET UP AND FIGHT THAT CRAB, YOU BITCH!

  • Reminds me of Metal Slug :)

  • I LOVE this game. I still own 1 copy for my NES.

I was never able to beat the game =( don't think it had save points or passwords, you had to beat it in one run.

    Still a great game.

Me and my brother sometimes played all day and let the console be on all night to beat some games, like Mario 3.

    Great review mark.

  • lol get up and fight that crab u bitch lmao

  • man i remember nintendo systems from way back when.. You would try to beat the game to say you BEAT it... not to try for all the fucking achievements !!

  • @Biberhofer i know man! that's what im talking about! i fucking hate these achievement things, being able to say that i beat hella NES games sounds way cooler than i got 90% of the achievements lulz

  • The Sophia mk3 (tank/truck thing) is a rover

Also I think they did release a sequel on the segagen

  • LOL 2:10 metroids

  • :D Same Twas one of my first games I played when I was just a kid. Why wasn't this a character on ssbb :p just a thought...

  • DO IT FOR THE FROG MAN!

  • 22 years after its release, this gem still tops my personal NES Favorites list, and ranks very high on my All Time Favorite Games list. In 1988 it was original, refreshing and thoroughly entertaining. In 2010 its visuals, music and gameplay have stood the test of time.

Long live old school gaming. Long live Blaster Master!

  • i love it too

  • Blaster Master,Batman and Journey To Silius were the 3 best Sunsoft games for NES

  • NO TURBO 16...?!?!

  • Mark should review the Wii remake. (and the sequals)

  • its called the guardian legend

  • @heraymo YES, that is it. THANKS

  • I have a question, what is the name a game with a woman that is part human and part spaceship. This game was on the NES.

  • @dirty706 It was a great little gem of a game titled 'The Guardian Legend'.

  • I just nostalgia'd all over the place.

  • where is the master system games ???

  • I got all the way up to the ice level back in the early 90's. Then I realized I had been playing for 8 hours and that this game really needs a save system. Never made it to the end of the game :(

  • same as me, and it was hard enough juts to get there. you can do what i'm doing and get an emulator and use save stats!

  • I remember renting this game and never being able to get past level 3 now I know why, I did not know where to get that hover upgrade

  • I'am tryin to order all the nes games i can..Any1 know a good place to order online???

  • Loving those last comments you made on the review. LOL. Well, since the boss glitch covers 2, 4, 6, and 7, I can easily say 5 was the hardest boss in the game, since 1, 3, and the final bosses in 8 weren't too difficult especially with full gun or turbo grenade. I found kicking that crab' butt was easiest with full gun. Saved on evasive maneuvering in that fight too.

  • I was never a big fan of this game, growing up or now. The level design was cool and the boss music is fun to listen to, but overall I thought it was pretty average. The graphics aren't that good and the weapon upgrades are pretty minimal. I prefer Gun Nac/Gun Smoke/Guevara/Gradius II to this game.

  • See, the problem with your argument is... I dunno about Guevara, but I know the other 3 games are shoot em ups... Blaster Master is not. They're entirely different styles of games and gameplay. Blaster Master is more of an exploration game than an action game. It fucking rules, I think.

  • i got this and the new one for the wii gameing goodnes

  • review blaster master overdrive for wiiware ...do iiit

  • Good review, I always had a harder time with the 6th boss myself.

  • you better review that new master blaster game for wiiware.

  • great review, but your voice makes it sooo boring dude !!

  • just bought this for 5 bucks at Play N Trade used. I was so surprised it was so cheap, where as Contra was 15. Man I love this game.

  • I'm thinking of downloading this or Blaster Master Overdrive on the wii. So far, I'm leaning toward the NES original.

  • You sound stoned, dude!!! Haha, LOVE IT! Oh, I also love this old school review! Brings back memories of my video gaming youth!

  • Love how you ended it. ^_^

  • This was one of my favorite NES games, even though it's still quite a challenge for me to play. Blaster Master 2 on Genesis / Blasting Again on PlayStation didn't seem to be as fun as this game.

Sophia is considered a "walking tank".

The music is some of the best on the system - along with Duck Tales, and the Mega Man series.

  • Hey Mark there's a new Blaster Master game called Blaster Master: Overdrive for the WiiWare just released today (Feb 8).

  • Wow ive seen video of Overdrive it looks so awesome. I must download it right away.

So much for me getting sleep tonight lol.

Before Fallout was even thought of.... i was blasting Radioactive Mutants in Blaster Master.

  • i can't wait because tomorrow theirs going to be another blaster master game on wiiware an it's called blaster master overdrive

  • This game is cool. I also rather liked the sequels on the Genesis and Playstation, though neither were as good as this one on the NES

  • I've owned this game since Christmas of 1989, to this day I still can't beat the boss in area 5. It's the only game of my NES collection i've never beaten. I still love it though.

  • Blaster Master and Ikari Warriors are probably the two non-Mario NES games I played the most.

  • This game fucking sucked.

    Kidding, IT'S GREAT

  • You're stupid.

    Kidding, YOU'RE NOT.

But seriously, now that it's on VC, everyone will be able to enjoy it. :)

  • This was an A+ game... esp for an early NES game. VERY challenging... I got this w/ my NES when i got one way back when and I never beat it. i tried in my 20's and couldn't beat it either! I would play it for hours and pause it and have to come back later or even days later trying to beat it. But to no avail! Damn no password and limited continues!!!!

  • Great game. Another solid review from Igon Spengler.

  • yeah the only neg that i can think of is the same one that you came up with and that's not being able to save or having a password.

but... maybe that adds to appeal of it.

  • one of my three favorite games ever. the other two being tetris and tekken 5.

i LOVE this game. i remember when i was a teen trying to beat that damn crab and i could never do it well i played when i was in my 20s and i roasted his ass.

yeah i might get a WII to play this and other nintendo games.

i heard that it came out on the PS1 in japan but they never released it here.

  • there was a great cheat where if you grenaded the boss or whatever he would flash that he was damaged...then you paused it Mid-Damage-Flash and it would continue to damage him while paused!

  • This only worked on select bosses

  • This only worked on bosses 2, 4, 6, and 7. Also if you were it and paused the game it would continue to cause damage to you!

  • ahh the good old days, discovering secret codes and passages by searching and rummaging through all my video game mags, or hopping on the bike w/friends to go to the book store to see if the new issues were out with tips and tricks in there.... or the holy grail....discovering it yourself.

now you just type what you want in a search box and its there.....alot to be said for the pre-web days.....

  • @deveraux009 i never did any of that....i was never one for magazines. me and some friends used to just hammer at the game till we did it...or gave up. or when i was really stuck....get my parents to do it for me >_>

  • @deveraux009 Castlevania 2 is a HUGE exception.

  • Playing this game when I was 13 in 1989 left such a mark on my childhood memories. One of my all time favorites on the Nes! Awesome review!

  • i dont like how when your the kid you die really easily from falling

  • I picked this game out for my birthday when I was like 9 years old. I had no idea what I was in for. This game is freaking ridiculously hard. After a year of playing it all the time I finally used a game genie to see the last level all the way through.

When emulators came out this is one of the first games I played.

  • this is an awesome NES game. I still have my original NES cartridge.

If youre up for a good challenge and solid gameplay this is a game you need.

  • the game almost has master system quality music.

  • This game rocks, just that simple!

  • My first NES game after Super Mario Bros, and the one that holds the most memories for me. It took me years to beat, but I always came back to it.

One of the best games ever made, and probably my favorite game on the NES.

  • Marcus make another review already and entertain my ass!

  • The first game on N.E.S. that I REALLY got hooked on.

  • greatest game of all time
