I love this song...I saw it on broadway but I find it excruciating to listen to them sing in duet as their voices seem entirely discordant. I think Mandy Patinkin did a much better job. Thank you for uploading it as this is probably my favorite broadway play.
My word, I still come back to this video time and time again. Absolutely lovely. Vocals, the characters... a very special performance. I would have loved to see this live. Is there a video of the entire performance somewhere? You were a blessed community. Thanks for sharing small pieces of it with us online.
I think the acting and staging of this could be done better ... I dont really like that they actually touch because she is a ghost? her singing is nice thou, the guy is better thou
I was in this same production as the Ayah... every time I heard this, I puddled up a lil. Lily is played by Caitlyn Caughell, one of my greatest friends for many years, who's a senior at NYU for musical theatre. She will be performing at the Kennedy Center at the end of Jan. '08. So yes, BeautytoAsh, can you account for the same credibility? Doubt it. You really need to learn how to listen for incredible talent just as Caitlyn & Mark. Obviously, you have something to learn in true vocality.
um, Allow me to say that BeautytoAsh is an arrogant asshole and probably can't sing a fourth as well as these two brilliant actors and singers. Go fuck yourself BeautytoAsh!
very good all around!!! archies acting was great... lily sometimes looks like shes shes not sure if she should show her emotion through her hand movements... i think she needs just to go with what her heart says.... great job... check my profile next week my high school is doing this and im Archie and we are better then average so check it out.... again great job
It's called vibrato. It's actually a good thing in the classical music world, as long as the singer has a good handle on it. She has a pretty good handle on hers, though it's a bit "machine gun fire". Otherwise, this is particularly amazing.
I agree, but this tune requires, what, two octaves (or just shy of it) of range from her. She's only just missing the bottom Bb...and she hits that A like it's the easiest note in her range. I'll take a sop who can swing that high register any day over a gal who is comfy in the lower and has to reach for the A.
But, yeah, it's a little low for her. I'd have loved to have heard Patti Cohenour (Drood, Phantom, Light in the Piazza...) do this role. She has the top AND the bottom. :)
By the way - Is there an issue with them looking "like they're trying to embrace the other one without being embraced themselves"? Imagine - she's a ghost, right? Apparently they completely succeeded, per the perception that is exactly what's happening. Thanks for pointing out how well they communicated that...I hadn't really caught that until going back again to watch.
Nice job - she's got a gorgeous voice, and he makes it flow so well.
You know, I've always loved this song but this is a really bad rendition. Lily who initially sounded fine ended up sounding like her larynx was going to wobble its way right out of her throat. And did anyone else but me notice that Archie was way, way off key when he and Lily began to sing together at the climax of the song? On top of it all the blocking at the end was silly. They both look like they're trying to embrace the other one without being embraced themselves. Totally shoddy!
How strange-I felt exactly the opposite- the section you apparently didn't like at the end was so well performed and emotional-and choosing to have Archie come in on a different note in the chord to emphasize the dischord between them isn't "off-key," it's a director and performer choice for dramatic effect, though more common in opera than musicals. Totally well done!
I'll make a note of that. The next time I hear some amateur (such as these two) singing beneath the pitch I'll remember that they must be doing it for dramatic effect and are pitching everything the composer intended out the window. Fine musicality indeed.
And as for opera, I've seen any number of operas and have never seen this intentionally flat singing that you say is so common. But then again, I'm sure I haven't seen the same amateur road-show productions you must be describing.
He actually didn't sing a different note than is written. He just missed a bit. That line is not easy to sing after just having hung out in the lower part of his range...it really comes out of nowhere. I highly doubt that there was any specific directorial change of pitch. He just scoops a little, and misses a little. It happens. This is a community production, and, vocally, a VERY demanding show. I think she has a very promising instrument, and he is really trying.
lovely performance. The beauty of the lyrics ring true. good job.

I can still hear the voices of when we did this musical in high school!

there is a high and low voice version of this. I am singing the low voice version.
It is a very powerful song and the low notes really bring out the intensity of the song.
