What a totally different approach to the music he has than when he sings as a heldentenor. In his recordings of Lohengrin and Meistersinger he doesn't have an ease of singing the top notes and sounds like many heldentenors do, slightly strained and yet here in Aida he nails the high C spot on and there is no strain that I can hear. He just doesn't do a diminuendo on the note as Corelli and others did, but still a top class performance.
Oh, I had the worst crush on him in my early teens, when he sang with the SF Opera - Lohengrin, Radames, Rodolfo. That tear in his voice can still make my knees weak. What a voice. Thank you for uploading - you always have the most wonderful music!
A great middle weight singer who solves all the problems in this aria. He takes no chances at the end and nails it. It would be interesting to hear him sing the same aria with slightly less echo. The echo makes his voice sound bigger than it probably was. He sings with passion like a high lyric tenor with enough body. I like the way he balances and spins the tone. Very thrilling singing. He does not puff off air at the end of phrases. Quite like Gigli. Bravissimo!

Wow! I have never heard such a voice! Very clean but still dramatic. Its a good thing i was able to find this amazing singer the world has largely ignored. He is my new favorite alongside corelli.

I like him but he totally cheated the vowel on that first high note. It's "vinto", he sang it "vohnto". He inhales through his mouth too. That has to make his throat dry. He doesn't even try to sing the final note softly either. I think the score calls for piano on that but I could be mistaken.
Few tenors can match his capacity for combining lyricism and dramatic singing. To my mind, he is the heavy voiced equivalent of Jussi Bjoerling, with exemplary technique and a silvery spin on the voice. Its a shame he didn't get the recognition that he deserved - but when one considers who was around during his career I guess there is only so much room in the PR machine for the word "great". RIP
You are right He didn't get the recognition .The hype machine was never behind him .But he had a substantial career. Maybe the italian voices of the time were the ones getting the attention . Sandor, though Hungarian, sang/phrased much like an Italian born and his mannerisms in singing Puccini were pure Italian He didn't sing a lot of Verdi did he? Shame he died rather young[in comparative terms]
@lpvcrcd Konya deserved more recognition. He had a sizable voice, which at his best was precisely balanced between lyricism and dramaticism. Thus he could do justice to each. Rather like a large-voiced Bjorling, as Alieaz has suggested:). He also had a lovely and rather Italianate timbre:) -
