@CalmDraven Okay I will try and explain it. This film takes place in "the real world" outside of the film continuity of the Freddy films. In the real world Freddy Kruger is just a film character, a piece of merchandise. The "Freddy" in this film is some sort of evil entity which was trapped in the fictitious world of the Nightmare movies but now has escaped.

@stephenkennedy08, it's Freddy. The way it goes is that this evil got trapped in the NOES films. But, because it got to kill stuff (and had plenty of fun doing it) it was okay with that. So this Freddy *is* the Freddy we saw in the other films. But, when they stopped making the films (and took away his fun) that gave him a chance to try to come into the real world and make his own fun. And, also, to assume a scarier look than they gave him in the flicks.

You know a lot of people say that this really shouldn't be considered a sequel to the other ones, but in a strange way it is. In it Freddy is beginning to exist in the real world because of his death in Freddy's Dead, as Wes put it since the movies were over he couldn't be contained anymore, and he was looking to crossover into our world and it technically is the same character from the previous films. So yeah, I do consider it at least in a way a sequel.
