The 69 has the same smugglershatch as the 70, 68, 71 and 72. (it's all the same car except for a few differences like the design of the front grille and some minor changes.
Cutting it open to access it from the inside. I wouldnt do that. Cutting it could compromise the structural strenght of your body.
If having a trunk means that much to you, buy a chevelle. don't mutilate the car.
P.s. with a bench seat you have a hard time accessing the area behind you when driving so there's no point
Hey i havee a question, ive only been inside a 78 el camino, and i plan on buying a 69 or 70. Does your '70 have the 'Trunk' space inside behind the seats? I know that the '69's compartment was on under the bed, covered up. and my 78 it was inside the car behind the seats, but yea, is the box open inside yours? and if not do you thing it would be possible to cut it open so the 'trunk' could open up into the inside?
@EyeDoStuff - I'm not certain for other years, but my 1970 has an opening behind the driver's seat that goes up under the bed. The passenger side is closed in, but the same space exists there as well. The compartments are actually the seat wells for the rear seat of the Chevelle station wagon, which is what the A-Body El Caminos were built on. Other shared parts with the wagon are the front fenders and headlight extensions and the frame. Hope this helps.
@dscabra Yes that helps alot lol thanks, yeah i knew about the wagon part,So one last question, does your elko have the comparment outside on the bed aswell? or just the inside behind the seats? if so instead of a 69 i wouldnt mind going up one year lol
@EyeDoStuff - Yes, you can access the entire space from the bed. There is simply a panel that can be removed easilly from the bed. In fact, this is a key area to check for rust when buying one of these cars, as well as the channel along the bottom of the rear window.
@dscabra alright great,i will be checking for rust, so i say within a few months i will have my '69. I think around the bay are i can find a decent one for about 2-3k. thanks alot though.
Nice looking car. Sounds good. Did the larger cam swap require you to run headers? I have the same car with the same motor pretty much. Need to get a new video camera so I can post vids of mine.
I am only 15 but when i get my license i want a 69 el camino SS396, i dont even have the car yet but i have already made a whole list of parts for it LoL. i know that the from 68-72 are generally the same under the skin so i would appreciate it if you told me about any problems you had and just how good it fells to drive that amazing car(truck). and also the noise is awsome, i love muscle cars, this is my 3rd favorite. i think you should put o hard cover over the bed, it will look cooler
Check out the teamchevelle forms if you really want to learn about GM A-Body cars. The guys and gals that hang out there are very friendly and helpful. You will find more information than you can read on the site.
i bet it is i cant wait till i get mine its such a great vehicle and the rumble of a big block v8 is music to my ears. the 69 is my favorite i think that one looks the most badass
The car is beautiful. Wondering what problems could come up when selling a 70 el camino that has a 71 vin number and title. My dad bought it from a car dealership about 15 years ago. No problems then i don't think. I'm now 23 and i drive it for years until the transmission finally gave out. I am currently selling it as is of course. I would like to get a respose if you could help me.
It may have 70 sheet metal on the front-end, but if it has a 71 VIN and title, then it's a 71. The issues would come up if you try to sell it as something that it's not. Just be up front with any prospective buyer and you should be okay.
The sizes are 15x7 on the front and 15x8 on the rear. They are classic Craggar SS wheels with the spinner style centers. They are available at some pretty good prices from Summit Racing. The bolt pattern is 5 on 4.75. Thanks and have fun with your '69.
ZZZ-350 Crate Engine (1st generation ZZ) with a performance cam (don't know the specs) mated to a TH-350 transmission and original GM 12 bolt rear end with a 3:73 gear.
oh yeah, im in san diego, i forgot the rest of the country has weather hahaha. yeah dont let that thing get any rust on it, its pretty damn near perfect

Are these mufflers the Super 40's or the Delta Flows? Any issues with excessisve droning inside?
N2GLOCK1 1 year ago
@N2GLOCK1
They are the older Flowmaster 40 series (now banned), not the newer Delta Flow product.

hey,
before 1970 (including 1970) these engines took higher octane leaded fuel, just wondering what you use now to run it, premium fuel?
thespeedingbullet101 2 years ago
The engine is a ZZZ 350 crate manufactured in 1987. It runs just fine on premium pump gas.

Picked them up at Summit. They are made by Dakota Digital.

how difficult is it to hook the digital guages up?. im considering putting some in my 70 el camino

Installing the Dakota Digital gauges was pretty simple. It took me about two days to do, but that included a complete dash swap.
