I may get some negative responses from the Romero and modern zombie movie fans, but frankly I find this movie and White Zombie could be much more sinister. Romero's great, but his style's been imitated to death like vampire films saying they die from sunlight after Nosferatu's idea. I love the shadows and silence in the Lewton produced films and the fact they are technically still alive makes it scarier. I miss the gothic and psychological syle these had. Sometimes a dark room is FAR scarier.
Some of the best stage settings and movie lighting ever, it's up there with Orson Welles. More psychological than creepy. Frances Dee, not a great or successful actress, was considered one of the most beautiful women ever in movies. She was married to actor Joel McCrea. Movie was very respectful of the black characters, they were interesting people with dignity. The posing and lighting of Frances Dee is show stopping, she is such an absolutely good-looking woman!
@vjmartinez88 Right on. The problem with the people who hate this movie is they're used to todays zombie flicks where there's a gross out scene every 5 secs. Lewton never showed the monsters, allowing your mind to create all the horror.Goodto know there is someone out there who enjoys these flicks as much as I do.
Romero didn't even call his critters zombies in the original Night movie, but the Living Dead, or simply the Dead, and they more closely resembled vampires, right down to their condition being contagious, albeit closer to the vampires of Asian sort who were known to eat livers and hearts, and the Arabic one called the Ghul who were often corpse eaters, but would eat the unwary traveller...
cinematic jem? wtf...this was a terrible movie....didnt even show any real zombies....this was seriously the WORST! NO EFFECTS NO NOTHING just boring chit chat.....20 thumbs down for this one man.....everyone wwho likes it is messed up
i rented this the other day and i think it SUCKED. u dont even see any real zombies....just this woman who acts like shes sleep walking or someshit....and the plot sucked an d the characters sucks and the whole movie sucked cuz there was not one spec of action..and BAREly any scary scenes..this should be REMOVED from the zombie genre...this movie was the worst cinematic experience in my entire life because it did not provide a thrilling, suspenseful experience that most zombie flicks provide!
This is actually a pretty good movie - not sure what made them choose such a terrible title, but if you like thrillers/horrors - give this a look. It truly is one of the better horror films from this time period.
The story of the titles is thus- Val Lewton, the producer of this movie and Cat People, Curse of The Cat People, The Body Snatcher, and others, was made head of his studio's B-movie wing under 3 conditions- each movie, the studio gave him a title, a budget and a 75 min or less running time- he then got the film written and made and was left to do what he liked. Th studio gave him titles they thought sounded marketable and exciting, but they usually sucked and he couldnt change them.

Not quite right Darby Jones played the zombie Carrefour convincingly, and Edith Barrett made for an interesting zombie like one in catalepsy.

This was made before Romero, so Zombies were strictly voodoo related.

Apparently the director, Jacques Tourneur, was given the title and created the movie around it. He did the same thing with "The Cat People".
