i have that same problem on a portable shortwave radio. something in my house is bothering the radio. specialy near a plug. but i go outside to listen to shortwave and ham bands without that annoying noise. i keep blaming the high voltage powerlines outside. but i go outside and a bit closer to the powerlines they dont bother the radio. when i actually listen to the annoying sound it attends to have change in tone as if it were video signals for a tv.
I feel for you I have the Same problem from my naughbours tv it wipes out all of the bands at about 200 eg( 7.200,,,,14.200). I changed my antenna from a vertical to a wire, and there is a good improvement not wonderful but better,I have contacted ofcom many times ....... There not intrested
The problem is that plasma tv SCREENS put out RF. Unfortunately, there's no way to filter that out that I know of, though some of the people on QRZ or EHAM may have some ideas.
hey wht can't you put a fitler on the radio or the tv??? have you ever keyed up on that feq. when you got that noise? in if so what happened thanks 73
Hang on a second... did I hear that right... you have a full size G5RV in your loft? all I have to say is wow! i can hardly fit a half size G5RV in my garden!!!
Hi, Artificial Ground is really not as good as a real ground, if you live on a top floor flat, don´t worry, you don´t have to travel a cable all the way down, you can try connecting a cable to the sink pipes, this could be used as a pretty much better ground than the artificial ground, remember to ground the Plasma also. Just run a cable to the nearest bath, and connect it to a metal pipe. Good luck!
You maybe tried this before, but if not, you should check your grounding system, I have seen a lot of cases like this being solved by installing a proper grounding system to your radio and also your TV, the shielding should be grounded. Also the noise maybe transfered not by the air and into your antenna, but by the same electrical system, so the use of filters can make the difference, but I am almost sure that grounding is the answer. Good luck
Grounding certainly is a big problem for me as I stay in a top floor flat so its difficult. I got myself an MFJ artifical ground to try but early days testing that.
I've tried running on Battery power with the 706 I've got here too, with very little difference but a mains filter is definately a move I'll be making.
I forgot to tell you that even battery powered radios work better with grounding system. For example I power my radios with solar panels and batterys, and even so I connect the negative terminal and the shield to ground, and I haven´t any RFI problem whatsoever. Good luck!
Yeah got the big clamp on ones here I've popped 1 on each end nearest the scokeets but no difference, however I do know its part of the problem as I pull the scart out and the level dips a little.
I told my wife over a year ago, we're never getting a plasma TV! The LCD is ok, but I do get some minor QRM on 80m & 20m from some neighbours TV I think but it's intermitten... The HF bands are always under attack!!!
I have a Panasonic Plasma and have some QRM. My antenna is outside on a 10M pole with some Ecoflex coax but still static. Usually peaks to an S2/S5 and seems worse at night, not sure how this is possible. Anyhow, LCD will be the next one, less demanding on the electric too :)
No idea how it can be worse at night, yeah theres always the economic factors to consider with the Plasma V LCD power consumption.....trying to convince myself to get an LCD ;-)
Interesting video. The manufacturer should be hauled over the coals for selling a device like that on the consumer market, as well as being ashamed of themselves. It shows a complete lack of R&D, design, and EMC testing. For that thing to carry CE marking is just a joke. We have a Philips 42in LCD gogglebox here and don't seem to have any problems. Hopefully the recent news on plasma's being discontinued in Europe will help. 73 - Rob VK2GOM / G0MOH
This is a pretty scary situation--but all too common with the increasing proliferation of very high speed clock circuitry in digital devices. Last summer, Cablevision installed a network box two houses away and it just destroyed parts of the Shortwave band. The QRM has no discernible spectrum--a steady wash across all freqs. Pleased to see a Ham Radio Video pop up on my poledance channel. I always tag my callsign, KB9EVA and wondered if it would attract a vid. Surprised I could still copy code!
Yep, get exactly the same QRM from my Pansonic Plasma. You will find it helps to have an outdoor antenna (if possible) and move it as far from the house as you can. I've tried all sorts of filters etc. all to no avail.. 73 de Terry.

The noise reminds me of the old computers that did not have good RF shielding.

Well I've not been able to resolve the issue, so I've now replaced the TV altogether...with a nice LG LCD.
Its really like have a whole new radio without the interference!!!!!

You will just need an Timewave anc-4 or similar phasing device to remove the hum from your receiver.
I have an homebuild phaser, that works wonders on 40 meters..

hey do you think I could use a rod in the ground like 4 foot in a 6 foot 12-g copper wire
tkdteen2 2 years ago
YES a 4 foot rod and a 6 foot cooper wire will do.

HI there James
You might have already tried it but have you try ferrite clamps on the scart leads as that cured my QRM from a tv in my shack

Yeah the HF bands in the UK are poorly protected from this type of thing.....best to live in the middle of nowhere if you want to hear anything :-(

I also have similar QRM problems with a 40" Sony LCD !

LCDs do not seem to radiate much QRM unless they use poor switch mode PSU designs in the main it seems.
There is an 37" LCD in the room next to my shack and it doesn't generate any interference to me at all.

Hi Terry,
Yeah I've been reading up on it on the web and I think your right, theres no filtering that will work with this problem.
I think its a case of getting the antenna as far away as possible and hope it goes and if that doesn't work...get rid of TV and get an LCD instead.
I love my Panny TV but its killing my HF work! :-(
