"Rickey Calloway and his NT Express Band use to performed at the Newport Hotel & Castaways in Miami Beach passing the hat around for change, at the pool side. I caught the eye of Wayne Cochran one day as he watched from his Penthouse Suite, Mr.Cochran sent for me to meet him, He told me that I was good, He invented me and my band to his show that night. Oh Boy, what a performance.I've seen James Brown Live a few times, Mr. Cochran sounded great, good showmanship. This was in the early 70s"
Growing up in Chicago, I saw Wayne play at the Rush Up several times and The Castaway's Bowling Alley in Calumet City had a huge lounge that I played at with a show group that I was in. It was owned by the same folks that owned The Castaways in Miami. I saw Wayne there a few times as well. A drummer friend of mine from Chicago played percussion in the C. C. Riders and got my band an audition at the Castaways in Miami. They were the model for every show band in America.
I seem to remember Wayne Cochran and the CC Riders playing at "The Other Place" once in a while in Daytona Beach back in the late 60's or early 70's. They were awesome!
I have the dubious distinction of having Wayne hit my brand new Acoustic 360 bass amplifier smack in the front of the control panel when hurling around a bottle of vodka at the Miami Newport Hotel Seven Seas Lounge in the early 70's, around the time his LP "Cochran" was released in 1972, complete with the 14 piece CC Riders. Wayne always paid for any damage caused. And he left a trail of damage wherever he played. But he was unbelievably great and hard core soul man.
There wouldn't be other rock hairstyles like this till the '80s (Flock of Seagulls, etc.) In the '60s and early '70s, he must've looked like he was from outer space.
WAYNE COCHRAN - ONE OF THE CONFEDERATE RECORDS ARTISTS from Macon Ga group of artists originally produced by Bobby Smith that made the big time- His now a Preacher in Miami! This version cut at Crytieria Studio in Miami- I was one of the back up singers- Producer Bobby Smith!
He played in Lee Carens Carnival club in Cocoa Beach ,Fl crazy night jumped behind the bar and grabbed bottle of good stuff not bar brands and free poured in customers drinks. I was working at the register Wally was at the bar!
i remember him playing in the rhodes brothers lounge at the merchandise mart in miami. that was early 70's, wen. nite ladies nite. he was wild!!!!!!!!!
I ran the stage for Wayne in 73-74 and knew all the CC Riders. The lead trumpet player for Wayne for most his Wayne's career was Tidon and I don't believe Tidon ever married or had kids. Tidon was extremly religious person who now I believe is in a monistary or is a priest.
Growing up in Buffalo when the drinking age was 18 there was this great club called the Inferno. We used to get Wilmer on wednesday night and either Wayne or Wilson Pickett on a Friday. A great show always
My dad played lead trumpet twice for the Riders. Does anyone have any archives from the Barn? We opened a roadside barbeque cafe in Arkansas and would love to put pix on the wall
I ran the stage for Wayne on Miami Beach in the early 70s. We were about to remodel the club, when I suggested "Let Wayne tear down the club instead of paying people for it". Wayne loved the idea, so did the audience.
Wayne and his boys were easily one of the best rock and roll bands to have ever existed. It's a shame that so many people today have never heard of him. I went to his website, and of course, he's some sort of preacher now.
Remember seeing Wayne and the CC Riders on The Jackie Gleason Show. And living in Miami made it even cooler. My friend, now in Chicago, and I, still talk about him and how great he was. Two giants: James Brown & Wayne.
Me too!!! I couldn't believe the great r&b band and, of course, Wayne - a/k/a the white James Brown. Wouldn't it have been a kick to see them perform together?

Wayne recruited many horn players from Berklee School of Music in Boston, a famous College for it's jazz heritage.

Saw the band in Chicago, Happy Medium theater. LIterally tore down the curtains on stage. Two drummers, and just great.
Last time I saw him was is Prospect Hts. IL. He jumped over the bar, grabbed a Jack Daniels and started to chugg it.
He got billed by the Happy Medium for all the damage but it was something to see.
