That bass sound is big, ballsy and harsh, I haven't heard many bands from this time that had that type of sound. Most bands from this era used the flat wound soft attack sound, this has a bright attack almost distorted and compressed, not unlike Chris Squire from Yes, or an early rush bass sound.
@FoolsChaos That's the Fender IV Six-string bass. I love that sound, too. It's almost too heavy for this kind of music. You'll find that sound in some of the Beatles' White Album songs like 'Helter-skelter' and 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps'. Eric Haydock from the Hollies used one of those, too.

My biggest regret is that I was not aware of DDDBMT until I saw Deathproof. These guys are excellent and I do not know how I missed this group! They should have been a lot more famous.
I was only 7 or 8 when this was on the radio and thought it was such a funny song, of course I was only a little girl...Then we had it at a school social in primary school still thought it was funny but then as I got older loved it even more..I wonder if you could play Twister to it, now that would be different. I am glad I found this :)
leave it to the Brits to come up with this great song .. so original and so suggestive! its a typical 60s' British Invasion sound !!!this was one of the best groups from that time !!! thank you for posting .... and rip Dave Dee..xxx... lyndloo
Great and original song in its own right, but certainly inspired by Greek sirtaki music which was just becoming known in the sixties as a result of growing tourism to Greece and the Zorba film.
ich habe ne frage an dich hast du auch das lied mit der peitsche aus den jahren 1968 weiss nicht wer es gesungen hat bin aber sehr neugierig wer es gesungen hat. und hätte gern das lied allesausliebem27
It was by accident that I came across this song ! I recently saw 'Death Proof' which has their song 'Hold Tight', which I thought was cool, but this song's even cooler! Would've NEVER heard it on the radio cos classic rock stations only play the same overplayed stuff.
I like better than the Beatles also. They have some great songs on their albums. I wish they would have been more popular in the States. No good groups like this anymore.

I always loved this song & it's rather unique (for rock & roll) sound--parts of it put me in mind of the music for those Greek line dances, such as from "Zorba The Greek."
But I guess we must have had a different version of this in the States, as I am positive I remember a lyric I don't see here--toward the end of the song--"when life's ending, we'll be bending."
Oh yeah?!!! Apparently when they recorded the clean version for the US Dave also did a REALLY obscene version which he left for the record company boss to find on his desk the next morning.

gymnastix 3 years ago
I know it was on a 7", 45 rpm single, so not an album or EP cut. And it was a light blue, Fontana label.
Any helpful info. on this discrepancy? I'd like to have all versions of it, if possible in .mp3 or .wav formats, if not on CD.
Another favorite, "odd" pop song was "Little Arrows" by Leapy Lee.
gymnastix 3 years ago 3
Apparently they were forced to record a tamer version for the US market as the Brit lyrics were considered too suggestive.
quantumleap7 3 years ago 3
The version in this video IS the tame US version. The first line of the "dirty" version is
Bend it, Bend it,
Show me you can move
And do the dance that's really in the groove
deanjones30 3 years ago
Oh yeah?!!! Apparently when they recorded the clean version for the US Dave also did a REALLY obscene version which he left for the record company boss to find on his desk the next morning.
