Just out of curiousity, and not having read any of the comments, what drums are you using? Pearl? Mapex? Yamaha? Dynasty? They look like pearls from the video, but I would like to know.
Just out of curiousity, and not having read any of the comments, what drums are you using? Pearl? Mapex? Yamaha? Dynasty? They look like pearls from the video, but I would like to know.
@killx5 if they really were, i kinda see josh as a bass drummer, not so much a tenor/quad player...altho i can definitely see drake on snare, thats for sure
How do you do that Stick Spinning that Paul does, when he performs his solo in the re-visited version? [He rolls and flips his right-hand stick around] If there is a tutorial for this on Youtube that'd help a lot. Thanks =)
I gotta say I've overlooked video alot, cause it's just two guys in the bandroom goofin around. after actually watchin it... That was pretty f-n good. keep it up.
@mikey16piet I can't really tell exactly, it might be the claw (at least that's what i've been told that it's called), which is kind of hard to explain. If it is the claw, then you basically have to flick spin your wrist while pushing your arm out slightly out to get a rotation, but you have to grip up on the stick. If you do it slowly, it will most likely end up sounding like a flam, but you can speed it up and put it into a roll. It also might be the helicopter, which i cant really explain.
@AziZune Got it. I think the actual name is the Casey Claw or something like that, no idea, DCI started it. This one's inverted. In the original, you just hold the right stick about in the center, up like you're backsticking it, then spin it back and forth, alternating hitting the butt and tip. Once you practice and get it up to speed it can be fast enough to turn it into a triplet or double stroke roll.
The helicopter, FYI, is a claw with both hands. Bitch to do it, but it looks ridiculous.
@shadows9209 THE HULKA HELICOPTER!=D and the one he uses here i believe is the one casey brohard from blue devils does. His is more of a triplet feel claw, which i don't attempt cause i'm just not a fan. I'm more so a Cavies person myself so i go for the original claw the Casey Claw which was invented by Mark Casey of The Cavaliers between91-93? i know they first used it in 94 and again in 95 with none other then Scott "Hulka" McCoy=D
@slipchikin no traditional style was created BECAUSE of tilted snares. snares were traditionally played with a strap instead of a rig, so they were tilted and drummers adjusted their grip to what we call "traditional style" today.
Their both really great percussionist. I'm actually looking forward to performing something like this at my schools talent show with a fellow drummer of mine.
dude great video. i converted it to an mp3 and put it on my ipod my friend and I are trying to learn it. well not learn it note for note but were trying to make something like it me on tenor and him on snare. im not a tenor player I only play like orchestra shit like those percussion instruments. but we got five toms so ill try my best. Were trying to mimic the double beat 2004 tho
whys it called electric wheelchair? our tenor player does a solo in our cadence called that .... i was thinking about trying out for snare during out indoor season this year... i play drum set and vibraphone during our show and play cymbals at football games
@slipchikin False. Traditional grip is for TILTED snares. Back when traditional grip was invented hundreds of years ago in Europe (even before america was founded) drummers marched with their drums under there left arm. This meant that their left stick needed to come over the rim comfortably, hense the underhand grip. As years passed, the drum was tilted upright until around the 1970s when the carrier was invented. Although the drum can now be completely horizontal, this grip is TRADITIONAL.
he so clean cause he knows how high his hands need to go the snae would get ate alive fromwhere im from because stick higth the judges down here dont like it
Can someone please explain the backsticking technique he uses in his solo? The on where he holds the stick straight out and hits it with both sides. I vaguely understand the idea, but I can't figure out how to use it practically.
@Cheznikkkk considering that Nick is playing "Opie's Opus" which is a hard tenor solo ment for advanced players he can play it well considering its made up of nothign but Spiders and rolles and dittles
@Cheznikkkk It means the point of using mallets is so you won't hit the rim and can do scrapes with ease. The added width to the diameter of the tip is designed so that you won't hit the rim.
Ehh, not really. As far as I understand, mallets were the natural choice since the modern tenor evolved from the single tenors and the timp toms of the past. Now, while it may be easier to move a set of mallets around, MOST writers use it for the big fat sound instead of the thinner sound of a stick.
I've yet to see a good book where the writer waters sections because they're played with sticks instead of mallets.
