As an exchange student who went from Utah to Brazil, this made me so happy, I almost cried. Just by learning a new language, a new culture, I have broadened my mind, and become a more happier person. I am just so overjoyed that this is happening.
This IS wonderful. Having a daughter who in high school went to South America (on scholarships), knows fluent Spanish; is now going to college in Japan, and then going to college in China, her world is VERY different and enriching! Americans are much too insular, and those who think this is a bad idea have not accepted that this IS a global society, and it is very exciting to share global experiences. I congratulate Utah on this program, and I hope that it expands throughout the nation.
Congratulations for this WONDERFUL Program. I hope to apply its principles to Brazilian Education in Angra dos Reis, RJ, where I live. Thanks for sharing it and for inspiring us worldwide... :-)
Amazing, inspiring, incredible! This exemplifies 21st century skills in action. Utah has every reason to be proud - great leadership behind the plan and a role model for all other states to follow. I hope everyone shares this video as an advocacy tool in hopes of developing similar programs. Great vision + great leadership = great results!
You are wrong forcing your opinions on children at an age they can't make their own choices. Language has always been an elective and should stay an elective. This is America and we have the choice and the opportunity to choice ourselves. Very disappointed in your selfishness!
@jokim2100 You're right; children are not capable of making their own choices regarding their education. Why is "forcing" a language on them any different than "forcing" history, math, or language arts on them? Students who know a second language have been shown to do *BETTER* on other subjects as a result of knowing a second language has helped them to do better in other subjects regardless of the language in which it was learned.
@jokim2100 Say, do you send your children to Sunday School? Vacation Bible School? I heard my cousin's daughter say, when asked at the age of 4 what her favorite part about school was, "Learning about Jesus!" So is my cousin teaching something important to his children or "forcing his opinions on children?"
