I like this guys reviews he gives games a good shake but his ideas here feel complete at odds he complains that stuff is rehashed but then goes into how good they still are? Feels wrong Episode 2 was one of the best things to ever come out of Half Life.

He assesses the game's merits and demerits which he experienced, ultimately finding the demerits to outweight the merits. I for one disagree, but I still find it to be a serious enough review.
@laifalbert the point is, that a subjective review doesn't give someone, who doesn't know the game a correct image of it, especially if you don't know the preferences of the reviewer. an objective review compares the game with similar experiences in previous games, so the viewer can compare it. The review should answer questions about the gameplay and the story and should not be influenced by personal preferences...but as i already said, there aren't a lot of reviews like that out there.

Second of all, this reviewer does compare it with similar experiences in previous games multiple times in this review. He does, in fact, discuss the gameplay, story, music etc. and compares it to previous installments in the series. I think you may dislike the review purely based on the fact that his opinion differs from your own.

I'm probably in the minority here, but he has a point. Half-Life 2 was absolutely a masterpiece in just about every way, but the Episodes to me feel like Valve trying to capitalize off the original's popularity. Both of them are short, generally uninteresting, feature relatively little plot development, bring relatively few new ideas to the table, shamelessly repeat setpieces from Half-Life 2 instead of thinking up new ones, and are overall entirely underwhelming.
What's wrong with this game? I mean its a part of half life 2 which is a great game divided in 3 parts.. So this part is great too.. I hope the parts become 4 some time (in other words they should make episode 3 sometime)

HL2 Ep.2 sucks. How is someone gonna complete it when they send 10 striders at you with 20 hunters, and the only think you can do is shoot a sticky ball at the Strider then shoot the ball... The ball doesn't even stick to the strider no matter how good you hit it.
Funny, because when he said the game had "no story" I was honestly legitimately surprised. Half Life 2 had a great story, and was told very oddly, but there really wasn't much of it. Ep. 1 had a little bit more dialogue and continued the story and made you like the characters a little more. Ep. 2, however was the one in which I really found out why people said HL2's story was the best. Ep. 2 has the MOST story out of ANY of the HL2 games.

I have to disagree with the voice acting though- I think characters generally sound a little bit too comical, ie. light-hearted in Valve games, especially compared to voice acting in BioWare and Obsidian games.

personally, i have to say that valve is not the bests when it comes to episodic games. I really loved half life 2, but the episodes were in the meh area. but if you have a look at their full on sequels, well they are absoloutely awesome. just look at portal 1 and portal 2 awesome storyline awesome voice actors and its original.
I found that while your points are valid, you are overly negative, probably because of Episode One's quality and both expansions' prices. The part where you fight both a male antlion and a guardian was exciting, though easy. The hunters were better enemies than you made them sound, and fighting them was extremely enjoyable. Lastly, the storytelling, particularly with the advisors, was spectacular. The game, overall is great. In addition, Episode 3's long dev time is indicative of high quality.

I don't think HL2 is the greatest PC game of all time, literally or otherwise, and it's meant to be you're, not your. Over analyzing a game or anything really is always a bad thing. Thats why i usually stay clear of reviews and judge most of the game based on what i see in game trailers and interviews.
Perhaps Half life 2 Episode 3(or Half Life 3) will have a "in the air vehicle”, since it was clear at the end of episode 2 that you would be traveling to the Borealis by air (the old chopper Alyx fixed up).
I've watched all of your reviews for all the Half-Life games, I do agree with you at some points, but yes, there are some assumptions that you make that are just incomprehensible to me.. Like for instance.. "There isn't one." -Referring to the story..
But infact, there is a slight continuation of the story, what I think, is that you've played too many games and you're expecting too much from them, and you clearly don't get the full potential of the HL2 storyline. No offence. (My meaning)

I've been playing FPSes all my gaming life and I can tell you the Episodes are fantastic. There is a lot of quality content, and wonderful firefights packed into 6 hours, as well as the fact that you actually feel an emotional connection to the characters.

It is largely driven by its characters and narrative. It is as varied as Half-Life 2, with equally good pacing. And the set-piece battles are some of the best in any Half-Life game to date.

I really don't understand how you could possibly come to the conclusion that Episode 2 has NO story. Did you happen to fall asleep during the whole struggle to close the portal? Episode 2 was the first game to even meniton the Combien Overworld. How about the Borealis plotline? As for the Gman scene, you brushed it off as if it didn't even matter, and was completely insignificant. Don't they count as story?

Add nothing? On the contrary, the events of Episode 2 seem like a very natural continuation of Half-Life 2, if you ask me. You have destroyed the Citadel, and evacuated the city, and the Combine are trying to signal to their home world to call reinforcements. Obviously the Resistance would be scrambling to close the portal, and to secure the data package. From Episode 1, I might have even guessed that the story was heading in such a direction.
but also,the episodes had a little story,even in this rush,and we have to give them credit:(spoiler alerts)in episode one,gordon and alyx find a file full with bunch of codes,so that when the citadel explodes,the combine will create a superportal,just as they started in the end of half life 2,but it was shut down by gordon,and when they escaped from City 17,with the file,they would need to get the file to White Forest,and,meanwhile,a rocket was created to destroy the superportal.

I usually respect and follow your fair criticism but you were way too critical of this continuation of Half Life 2. Sure it doesn't live up to Half Life 2, but it is in no way bad. I really enjoyed playing through episode 2 and personally cannot wait for the 3rd episode.

@laifalbert the point is, that a subjective review doesn't give someone, who doesn't know the game a correct image of it, especially if you don't know the preferences of the reviewer. an objective review compares the game with similar experiences in previous games, so the viewer can compare it. The review should answer questions about the gameplay and the story and should not be influenced by personal preferences...but as i already said, there aren't a lot of reviews like that out there.

Second of all, this reviewer does compare it with similar experiences in previous games multiple times in this review. He does, in fact, discuss the gameplay, story, music etc. and compares it to previous installments in the series. I think you may dislike the review purely based on the fact that his opinion differs from your own.

I'm probably in the minority here, but he has a point. Half-Life 2 was absolutely a masterpiece in just about every way, but the Episodes to me feel like Valve trying to capitalize off the original's popularity. Both of them are short, generally uninteresting, feature relatively little plot development, bring relatively few new ideas to the table, shamelessly repeat setpieces from Half-Life 2 instead of thinking up new ones, and are overall entirely underwhelming.

Funny, because when he said the game had "no story" I was honestly legitimately surprised. Half Life 2 had a great story, and was told very oddly, but there really wasn't much of it. Ep. 1 had a little bit more dialogue and continued the story and made you like the characters a little more. Ep. 2, however was the one in which I really found out why people said HL2's story was the best. Ep. 2 has the MOST story out of ANY of the HL2 games.

THERE'S A REASON FOR THAT! this game is using the SAME ENGINE and SAME BASE CODE and is just basically more STORY (which it had) added onto the basic game, Half Life 2. I have to disagree with the voice acting though- I think characters generally sound a little bit too comical, ie. light-hearted in Valve games, especially compared to voice acting in BioWare and Obsidian games.

I agree fully. In fact, I have played this episode and watching your review, realize that I remember absolutely nothing about it at all.
What I do disagree with you on is that Half-Life 2 was a good game. I watched your review and understand your points regarding the story, but the action, the playability was terrible and that ruined it for me.

personally, i have to say that valve is not the bests when it comes to episodic games. I really loved half life 2, but the episodes were in the meh area. but if you have a look at their full on sequels, well they are absoloutely awesome. just look at portal 1 and portal 2 awesome storyline awesome voice actors and its original.

I found that while your points are valid, you are overly negative, probably because of Episode One's quality and both expansions' prices. The part where you fight both a male antlion and a guardian was exciting, though easy. The hunters were better enemies than you made them sound, and fighting them was extremely enjoyable. Lastly, the storytelling, particularly with the advisors, was spectacular. The game, overall is great. In addition, Episode 3's long dev time is indicative of high quality.

Jesus Christ people I think it's you who need to stop whining. I mean, he makes really good points! The cave was pretty stupid and boring and at parts I also think they could have done better. Yet I like playing through the game. Just because he doesn't like the game as much as you do doesn't mean you don't have to like it anymore or it is a bad game in general. I actually find it interessting to see both perspectives of opinions.

I can't believe that people are saying that you're 'looking too far in' or 'over analyzing' the episodes, it's utter bullshit to try and cover up what the episodes really are. half life 2 ep 2 guardian run away sequence was not predictable i was running away saying fuck fuck fuck not know what the hell was behind me also it has no story because it continues the fucking story for half life 2 which was amazing it also pulls u into the story more by taking references from other games to make u remember it and the car u control in ep2 compared to hl2 is way better which makes it feel new also there a 3 new creatures not 1 and 1 new character as well as new graphics HDR

@tedahwooga I'm not comparing them. I'm illustrating the point that Ep2 is more generic-gunplay-oriented than HL2, and HL2's gunplay is not good enough to support that.
I don't think HL2 is the greatest PC game of all time, literally or otherwise, and it's meant to be you're, not your. If YOU'RE going to suggest I don't know what I'm talking about, at least try to a) understand my review (which you do not), and b) convey your opinion in a way that doesn't require interpretation on my part.

Perhaps Half life 2 Episode 3(or Half Life 3) will have a "in the air vehicle”, since it was clear at the end of episode 2 that you would be traveling to the Borealis by air (the old chopper Alyx fixed up).

I've watched all of your reviews for all the Half-Life games, I do agree with you at some points, but yes, there are some assumptions that you make that are just incomprehensible to me.. Like for instance.. "There isn't one." -Referring to the story..
But infact, there is a slight continuation of the story, what I think, is that you've played too many games and you're expecting too much from them, and you clearly don't get the full potential of the HL2 storyline. No offence. (My meaning)

I've been playing FPSes all my gaming life and I can tell you the Episodes are fantastic. There is a lot of quality content, and wonderful firefights packed into 6 hours, as well as the fact that you actually feel an emotional connection to the characters.

I'm sorry, but you brush off those things as if they are irrelevant and unimportant, when they are, in fact, very important aspects. But, in any case, Episode 2 doesn't just rely on those things. It is largely driven by its characters and narrative. It is as varied as Half-Life 2, with equally good pacing. And the set-piece battles are some of the best in any Half-Life game to date.

antisocialfatman,if you would pay attention to the story,as i did,you would understand it.and the storytelling that you said about,well,was pretty good,for a game made in two years,and another in one year,as they are pretty busy with other stuff,but i cannot understand how you cannot be busy with your best franchise!!!1 but the gameplay was the same in every way,the length was too short,and didn't match the ,,amazingness"and ,,godness" of half life 1 and 2,but they continued the story at least.

I really don't understand how you could possibly come to the conclusion that Episode 2 has NO story. Did you happen to fall asleep during the whole struggle to close the portal? Episode 2 was the first game to even meniton the Combien Overworld. How about the Borealis plotline? As for the Gman scene, you brushed it off as if it didn't even matter, and was completely insignificant. Don't they count as story?

Add nothing? On the contrary, the events of Episode 2 seem like a very natural continuation of Half-Life 2, if you ask me. You have destroyed the Citadel, and evacuated the city, and the Combine are trying to signal to their home world to call reinforcements. Obviously the Resistance would be scrambling to close the portal, and to secure the data package. From Episode 1, I might have even guessed that the story was heading in such a direction.

but also,the episodes had a little story,even in this rush,and we have to give them credit:(spoiler alerts)in episode one,gordon and alyx find a file full with bunch of codes,so that when the citadel explodes,the combine will create a superportal,just as they started in the end of half life 2,but it was shut down by gordon,and when they escaped from City 17,with the file,they would need to get the file to White Forest,and,meanwhile,a rocket was created to destroy the superportal.

1. Gordon would know how to fly anything

2. That there would be anything around any area in EP2 that could fly.

Secondly, there's a hovercraft and a land buggy, why is a flying vehicle so absurd? The vortigaunts could knock something up.
And finally, it was just a suggestion of how to do something that is thematically similar without being identical to stuff in HL2. I'm not committing to that idea.
