Parrots are much more intellegent that most people give them credit for. Many of the things they say or sounds they make they associate with certain situations.

Some friends of ours had one that would only say "Who is it?" when someone knocked on the front door or rang the door bell. If you tried to knock on a wall or other door to get him to say it, he wouldn't.

Lot's of people on here making comments that clearly do not know parrots. Parrots, especially African Greys learn words very quickly. The words the bird is saying could have been picked up anywhere inlcuding the television, the owners talking to other animals or kids, ect. Just because it says shut up does not mean the owner tells the bird to shut up. Interestingly, parrot seem to pick up the naughty words faster than the ones we want them to say, just like a child does.
