Don't compare Sonic Youth to The Stooges. There is no comparison. The Stooges were a badass rock band. Sonic Youth are a P.C. Noise/Art rock band with a chip on their shoulder. Velvet Underground, yes. The Stooges, no.
what i like most about sonic youth is that they're real and they "get it" and what i mean by that is that they understand melancholy, angst, depression hopelessness etc. which is how i felt as a teen. they understand me :)

Hey, does anyone know if there is a prequel to "Corporate Ghost"? I want a collection of all their early videos and I heard there was one...just wondering. THANKS.
Not to my knowledge. There was a little note on the "Corporate Ghost" DVD box that said there was a pre-Geffen collection forthcoming, don't think it's materialised.
Sonic youth is amazing! one of my favourite bands. Probably because of how they evolve creatively, They don't just go into the studio and record the same sound as last album. They change it up and play for their sake not the fans.
I had to explain to a former girlfriend what the attraction to Sonic Youth for me was, she came from the Techno scene and couldn't recognize what I heard in songs like this one and other SY tracks like "Sugar cane", "Little trouble girl" or "Sunday" SY can be 100% noise but they can also come up with very beautiful haunting melodies and apparently not everybody can hear that.
If you and your pals decide to get together and play some guitars with energy, feeling and abandon and do it for twenty-some years, this is what you may become.
the masters of noise rock (no-wave) still got it after all those years, hey. I hope Kurt Cobain could see them from where he is now.....he should be on stage with them, so sad.
1980's boss dm3 analog delay. it self oscillates, makes all kinds of sick noises just by maxing out all the switches then playing with the delay time once it's gone nuts.
no worries - id never sell mine but our lead guitarist might be going digital if you want one? they're not cheap though, check ebay, one has just gone for £190!!! I guess he might take £150 to avoid the annoyance of using ebay.
Songs in the key of D fellas. Their tuning seems to be some form of D major. From what I hear there's two open D's and an open F# in there.
Incidentally, why argue the toss about which is the best SY record? Most of them contain moments as great as any other. "The Eternal" has some classic touches, like this song, "What We Know" and my personal favourite "Malibu Gas Station".
They've been flying the flag for awesome alternative - truly alternative - music for decades, never selling out.
The green Jazzmaster Thurston Moore is playing hereis now sold by Fender as a Thurston Moore signature guitar. Lee Ranaldo has one in blue with Wide Range Humbuckers.
@mynameismark25 selling out is being paid to make a record the company wants you to make, not what the band wants to. there is no fucking way these dudes can. listen to "Silver Sessions"
Though this record is probably my least favorite they've done since Murray Street (the first record of their's that I heard and probably my favorite of their recent works), this song kills.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
their music is regressing. if you're listening to this, you must have heard their past stuff and it's indisputable. legendary band, but there reaches a point where you need to call it quits.
Nah. While it's certainly easy to say that the earlier stuff (read: most of their eighties material) is much better, I still enjoy this. I don't think that they should quit just because their old stuff is better.
I disagree with you there. I find their new stuff is more melodic and mellow than their earlier stuff. I don't find it regressive at all. To me this sounds nothing like Sister or Daydream Nation or even Experimental Jet Set Trash and No Star. I think they should keep making music as long as they want to.
Murray Street was released this decade, and it is a much more complete album than anything released in the prior decade if you ask me. Although their music today doesn't sound like The Sprawl or Catholic Block, it still holds artistic integrity, and I cannot wait for their next release to see what they do next.
You got that right mate - sneaks his boss dm3 delay self oscillation in nicely. Got one myself but always bend down to twiddle it. Might have to get a little stand like he's got!
Just (1h ago) saw them performing in Brussels. Who strokde me was the drummer actually. Didn't know the bloke but God he's good! And sometimes, in all their chaos, they are just pefect. Stunning band.
The women is not playing the bass, I said nothing about it. All I'm saying is the way she is playing in this is the way people who don't play guitar often play. Maybe she was trying to look like that? She just is not displaying her ability to play the guitar is she can in this video.
Well, this is not a speed metal song anyway! i think this simple playing gives the song that sort of naif sound (sorry for my bad english, but this is not my languaje)
@cc3814 I get why you'd make such a comment. Doesn't mean she's not good though. It's probably just how she got used to playing the guitar, plus she's playing the upper strings while letting the low E resonant, meaning her arm would have to be out of the way of the top string (hence it looking odd or "amateur" the way she's playing).
Oh and I say low E purely for reference, this is Sonic Youth after all.
