  • Hey Donald, i'm debating whether or not to buy seeds for these type of onions. Would they grow to the same size as yours in Canada?

  • @TheGardenkid1 … That’s a question I really can’t answer because you growing season is a lot shorter than mine. I would suggest you order the transplants instead of the seeds. Dixondale Farms in Texas sells em…….Donald

  • @webcajun This may be a bit unorthodox, but what if I order the seeds and start all of them inside so it would be alot cheaper for me? Or would that even work that well?

  • @TheGardenkid1 ... Some folks do start em inside so give it try.......Donald

  • @webcajun What type of onions are these? You said candy, is that the name or the variety. I live in Ga. so I thought that we may have nearly the same temps. Yours look beautiful. I would really like to grow this type. When do you start yours?

  • @gardenmist216 … The variety/name is “Candy”. It’s a sweet day neutral onion so it can be grown anywhere. I plant seeds in the fall and transplants in Feb-Mar……Donald

  • almost like a father figure, pleasant to watch

  • @makesmoney010 ... Glad you enjoy the vids........Donald

  • beautiful!

  • @nork3 ... Those were some nice onions......Donald

  • Where do you buy your mychorrizal fungi? I have also had good results with rock dust and compost, thy are a dynamic combination, ground charcoal and bloood and bone is also a good combo, also, pig manure is the preferred breeding manure of earthworms, better than cow and sheep, my soil is writhing with them at the moment, I have also had good results with n fixing cover crops like vetch, clover, lupin and medics

  • @permakid89 …Sorry but I don’t use any of that in the garden...Donald

  • @Efetida …Hey Matt, can’t find them local either so I order my Candy seeds from Morgan County Seeds…..Donald

  • HE'S SO ADORABLE!!

  • @lovehorseslovejonas ...Ah shucks. : )…Donald

  • i think, i said i think he sounds like fog-horn leg-horn.

  • @permakid89 ...lol.....Donald

  • reminds me of my job at the outback steakhouse. we make the "bloomin' onion". it gets breaded and deep fried. of course after eating so many of them you get tired of it lol.

  • @checkfoldcallraise ... Those Candy are bloomin onion size that's for sure.......Donald

  • @webcajun those onions look good but that soil does not seem to fertile.

  • @weaternpi ... Help me out here, how can you tell if soil if fertile or not by just looking at it in a video? If it's not fertile then how / why did the onions grow to their full potential? How can I grow 50 lb. watermelons and 10 ft. tall tomatoes? What do I need to do to imporve it?.......Donald

  • @webcajun i'm actually quite suprised on how good those onions came out, well one thing that i think could improve soil and maybe get full pontietal of your veggies is using more organic matter, like compost, humus, topsoil, manure another thing i got great results with, was using some soil amendments rockdust, zeolite and green sand but honestly the onions look perfect and if you really want big big veggies then you may need to buy mychorrize fungi and nitrogen fixing bacteria a little pricey tho.

  • Can you use the tops? Seems a shame to throw it away.

  • @Hoovesandpaws61 ...I guess you could but they'd be kind of tough at this stage of growth.......Donald

  • @dane8151 ...Dane I would love to send you some Candy onions but with all our crazy laws here in the US I'd probable end up in prison......Donald

  • @webcajun Azotobacteria is one species of nitrogen fixing bacteria. There are lots of different ones living naturally in the soil and they have discovered that different types of microbes (archaea) also fix N. While the Azos is beneficial to the soil, it is better to have a wide diversity of microbes rather than just one. Good compost will have lots and, of course. Fertile soil has millions of species of microbes.

  • @dane8151 ...Hey Dane, when the tops start falling over that's the time to pull em.......Donald

  • cool ty Donald and God bless yours are wow! I have only about six small but tasty red ones

  • what if they are smaller in a big barroll and so you let them grow up way bigger then?

  • @DiThomas ...You can let em grow till the tops start to fall over.......Donald

  • watching this video brings tears to my eyes.

  • @tricastlgs ... No tears if you process em right away.......Donald

  • Those are some beauties and I love your old-time calculating scale! I collect scales and have one just like it. Thank you for the onion tips!

  • @ypsidixit ...My father bought that scale by in the 60s. It only goes to I think $1.25 which wouldn't work with todays prices. lol.......Donald

  • is the stalk of the onion edible?

  • @1KniTeMaRe ...Yes but real green onion tops would be better......Donald

  • @webcajun thanks your video was very informative

  • My onions are still small but showing a little flower bulb on top, is that a bad sign?

  • @bradkrit ...Acording to Dixondale Farms once the seed head appears the bulb just about stops growing. I break em off, don't know for sure if it does any good but it appears to......Donald

  • Thank you so much for the info - now I know how. Thanks.

  • @clothespindolls ...You're welcome.....Donald

  • @webcajun Yes but, are those seeds that are on the top of the onion stem really a bunch of seeds. That's what I have. One lone red onion that has a tall flower on the top. Are these in fact the seeds coming? Because I planted this one red onion from a bulb.....?

  • @anamariavideo ...In order to collect the seeds that flower has to dry out. If you want seeds to plant I would order online, you'll probably get much better results......Donald

  • ;)

  • Cute dog!

  • @TheAsiamaczuga ...Thanks.....Donald

  • @webcajun What his/her name?! ;)

  • @TheAsiamaczuga ...Lucy......Donald

  • beautiful onions you have there mr webcajun

  • @dunno414 ..."Candy" is the variety and they get all the credit.....Donald

  • how long do you keep these in the ground?

  • @random5495 ...In my area Candy takes from 100-120 days from the time of transplanting.....Donald

  • Hey Donald, This video is always my favorite. I've got a question for you though. I've been growing onions now for 2 years and mine don't seem to stick out of the ground. Should I dig around them manually a little bit or just let it be and hope for the best. My harvest last year wasn't that great. I'm hoping for better results this year. Thanks for all your work Donald!

  • @kevinw3891 ...The depth you're plantng and the variety may have something to do with that. As you know I plant "Candy" and only plant the bulb about 1 inch deep. Never had to pull dirt away from them. Hope this helps.....Donald

  • @kevinw3891 webcajun was right it depends on the variety of onion your planting and the depth. im not as much in the know as webcajun but i think that if you plant the bulbs your only supposed to plant the bottom of the bulb in the dirt and if your planting sets you are supposed to bury them a little deeper. if you want green onions plant em about 3 inches deep, if your goin for table onions then plant em about 1/2 inch to an inch deep. hope that helps

  • Awesome onions Donald!

Question for you, hopefully not a dumb one. lol, Do you have to dry or "cure" your onions before you eat them, or can they be picked and eaten right away?

    Thanks.

  • @Cashis4life...If you're going to eat them right away no curing is necessary, only when you want to store them for a few months....Donald

  • Are the tops any good for eating or do you just compost them?

  • @shelmarie87 ...I grow green onions for the tops. These I just compost.....Donald

  • When's the correct time to plant onions? Are these green onions that you cut the tops out of and use for cooking, or is this a type of onion that you only use the "onion" itself? I'm kinda confused...

  • @231MasseyFerguson ...If planting seeds, plant them in the fall. If planting transplants, plant them now in Feb-Mar. The tops on these onions are not used for cooking only the onion itself.......Donald

  • @webcajun Thank You!! Ok, will I be able to find these "Candy" onions at a local hardware store or somewhere so that I can plant them now?? I'm always and I do mean ALWAYS am using LOTS of onions at a time becausing I constantly cook Jambalayas.

  • @231MasseyFerguson ...Google "Candy" onions cause you'll have to order them online. I have some extra if you don't live too far away. I'm in Avoyelles Parish.....Donald

  • @webcajun Ok, I'll Google it. Thanks... I'm down here in Livingston Parish, so I'm a good ways away from you. But I do appreciate the offer!

  • @webcajun Ok I found some Candy Onion "Hybrid" (??) seeds online. $2.74 for 100 seeds, shipping included. I'd like to buy them, but if I understand you correctly, it would be the wrong time of year for me to plant them ((with my corn and potatoes I just planted and will be planting cucumbers, squash, ect. soon)). Man I need onions now!! LOL... What do you recommend? Buy the seeds??

  • @231MasseyFerguson ...Try DixondaleFarms . com

  • @231MasseyFerguson ...They should have the transplants, you could plant now.....Donald

  • nice. i have planted an onion. i'm just waiting for the harvest day... thanks for this video.. ^^ hehehe

  • @KreizzlerKei ...just one? lol.......Donald

  • @webcajun

i just tried if i can really make it grow... if it really turn out great. i'll be planting more... ^^ i'm growing roses in the backyard so there is no space for me to plant more onions. but as soon i sell the roses. i'll be planting more onions or tomatoes ^^

  • Nice healthy onions, enjoyed ur video. Do u sell the vegetables or for ur home use?

  • @JuneGemini000 ... I give some away but mostly for home use.......Donald

  • @plant363 ... that would work if you want to harvest only the tops during the winter. The tops make for some pretty good seasoning and would grow right back.

If you could find some "green onion" seeds that would work even better. "Parade" is a good variety to plant for the tops only. I have some growing now........Donald

  • Man i'm jealous.. Mine are pip squeaks next to those bohemoths.

  • @Watsamadoing ... The variety you plant has a lot to do with the size. These are "Candy"......... Donald

  • Donald I am wondering what you do during the winter & do you miss not being with the garden? I know I did that's why I moved to California just to grow all year round I cant get enough of it.

  • @StatenIslandSlim ... check out the latest video, fall garden is planted and growing.......Donald

  • Donald, I am learning so much about vegetable growing through your great videos!

  • @cadwithoutend ... hopefully they will give you some ideas that you can use in your garden. There are so many different ways of doing things that you can hardly go wrong........Donald

  • Shouldn't it be better to leave all the skin on the onion if you are going to put them in the sun...It gives more protection...People say that if you cut them when they are still green the water that comes out can and will damage other onions if they get touched by it while being in the sun...

  • @DelDelincuentes ... actually it's recommended that you pull the onions and lay them on top of the ground in the garden for a few days to start the process. With all the rain we get here in Louisiana, at that time of the year, I'd be taking a big risk of losing some. Most of my onions are chopped up and frozen so taking the outer skin and dirt dirt off is just part of that process. If you don't have any dirt on em them I guess you could leave the old skins on...... Donald

  • @webcajun But if you leave them on the ground the heat from the ground will make them rot faster, but if (like you said) it rains alot then I think it is OK...

  • these onions are huge when did you plant them? and how long till you harvested them?

  • @AggiemanBA ... I usually plant in early fall and harvest in late spring / early summer.......Donald

  • when do you harves onios

  • @jerrydff7 ... my oinons are planted in the fall and harvested in late spring / early summer the following year......Donald

  • why did my onioss not becam a ball like??

  • @jerrydff7 ... onions take a long time to grow and mature......Donald

  • From what I am seeing, Donald, large bulb onions don't grow well from 'sets'.

Would I have a better chance at growing large bulbs, like in this video , from seeds??

  • @9aspengold5 ... the variety you choose determines the size of the onion. This variety "Candy" is a large onion. I start from seed then transplant the bulbs, spacing at 6-8 inches apart. If you can space the seeds out then there is no need to transplant.......Donald

  • @webcajun thank you Donald. I will try the "Candy' variety

next year and see if I have better luck. Love your video's.

  • My 4 onion bulbs I used from my yellow onion set hare 2 inch green shoots out of the ground in a week n a half. I have a plastic flower fot where I buried 20 close together and about 3 inches deep to get some longer white stalks and they are poking out about 3 inches. I planted those about 2 weeks ago. Now I will try about 20 for big bulbs and plant another 20 in a week or 2 to get more green onions.

  • @woodlandcammo27 ... sounds like you have a good plan...... Donald

  • I like the whole video. It felt personal, had no music, only what you would hear out there... that and the panting dog. Hahahaha. Do onions always grow with half of it's main body (The white part we eat.) out of the soil? I figured they would be further down.

  • @Jerrid3 ... I plant "Candy" onions and have never had to pull dirt away from the plants. Can't speak for other varieties...... Donald

  • I did not know one bulb equals one oinion only. I saw another guy in a video buy regular onions from a grocery store and then plant them... if you only get exactly what you put into the ground what would have been the point? A slightly bigger onion? Can you use the green tops like you would a green onion? Other wise it apears to be cheaper and more efficient to just plant from seed. Those onions are beautiful. I wish I had land to plant even a small garden.

  • @Jerrid3 ... planting an onion from the store really gets you nowhere. For onion tops, I prefer planting real green onion seed and harvesting the tops from them....... Donald

  • what if you planted an onion bulb? 1 onion bulb, how many will grow? and how long will you harvest them?

  • @argenrock7 ... one onion per bulb. Planting from seed it takes 135-210 days. Planting from sets 120-150 days....... Donald

  • @webcajun

so it is better to plant with seeds? cause the ratio of bulb one is to one. seems like i grew the same onion, nothing additional.

  • @argenrock7 ... I start with seeds in the fall and transplant the onion plants in early spring, spacing them 6-8 inches apart....... Donald

  • @webcajun

    thank you so much!

  • @argenrock7 Try onion sets. Can start them later and in 50 to 60 days you should have onions.

  • @woodlandcammo27

what do you mean by onion sets? sorry im new to planting onions

  • @ORGANTOLA ... never planted sets so don't know much about em. I've mostly started my onions from seed or transplanted onion plants...... Donald

  • i planted some in march how do you know when they are ready to be pulled up?

  • @kryston80 ... onions usually take 100-120 days. The tops will start to fall over and you can check to size as well......... Donald

  • can u eat the green thing or its bad ? and y u throw it away

  • @usausaarmy ... I guess you could eat the tops but I grow real green onions to harvest tops from......... Donald

  • cute pubby

  • Wow, you really must have some great soil there. We plant onions but there about a quarter of a size of these... think will try some fertilizer as you suggested. Also, we plant a few red onions - all the chefs seem to prefer to use them in their cooking.

  • The variety "Candy" has a lot to do with the size of the onion. Candy is a simi sweet onion that makes some great rings and also taste good in a gravy. Average size is 1 to 1 1/2 lb. each........ Donald

  • are these GMO?

  • No they're not........ Donald

  • just harvested my onions yesterday! got 50 big bulbs dryin in the garage and the house reeks to high heaven.love me some onions!!

  • Don't let those onions get too hot. I'm starting to lose mine (drying) in the 100+ degree heat...... Donald

  • i was worried about that too. old man Chicken down the road told me to watch them too, but then the good Lord gave us some rain and cooler temps so it looks good now! now im wishin it would stop raining so i can dry out my peppers.(sigh) its always somethin.:)

  • this is also my first year planting. my onion plants are biglike that but the union itself is not. a friend told me in order to get them big like that i have to cut the green off of them and the onionwill grow. any suggestions?

  • Like any other vegetable, the variety is what determines the size. Planting distance also plays a role........ Donald

  • @webcajun

I planted onion sets about last Nov. The stems are huge and I think the bulbs are starting to swell . Would the thickness of the stems be indicative of the potential size of the onions? Thanks so much ...and you get most the credit for anything I know about growing onions. We have been getting some nice green onions for several months now too.

  • @Rustico62 ... large dark green stems would be an indication of healthy plants. The size of the onions would depend mostly on the variety......... Donald

  • @webcajun The tops of the onions in question look a lot like yours in the video do. I guess we will know in a month or so. BTW, congrats on the great carrot harvest. I would definitely like to grow a carrot crop like that!

  • @Rustico62 ... the carrots in the video should have been harvested long before but I just couldn't get in there with all the rain we had. What really surprised me was they were still good.......... Donald

  • @webcajun Well Donald, I gave up on the onions grown from sets. It was a question of "close but no close enough". the did bulb but just sort of, and then got old. The onions from transplants grew out nearly 100% decent onions. Next year I won't bother with the store bought bulbs. Carrots are turning out nice I just wish i had planted as many as you did. Those would be carrot juice if I had what you got!

  • @Rustico62 ... I start my seeds in September and usually transplant late winter / early spring. Onions are then harvested in about 100 days. I canned 24 qts. of those carrots, ate some a couple of days ago in a stew. I've yet to try the beet tops but heard they are good eating. Maybe this fall I'll cook some..... Donald

  • @webcajun I am at 32 degrees latitude, similar to your situation.

Our onion types/ timing should be near the same. They are fun to grow.

    Thanks. Have a great day.

  • @webcajun One more note, a little off topic, I think you throw away your beet tops? We have been eating those and they are the best green cooked in the wok with a small amount of bacon, garlic and onions with a little sugar and cider vinegar and red pepper flakes. Just wanted to pass that along because that is a good dish. Add some water to the wok (any large skillet or pan will do). I can give you the link to the recipe ,if you want it. It'd be easier.

  • Wow, very nice. This is our first year of having a garden, and I am very excited! I think next year we are going to "over take" the entire back yard grass area.

  • Started harvesting this year's onions a couple of weeks ago. I think there are some even bigger than what you saw in the video. If I lived on a lot, the whole back yard would be garden. LOL ....... Donald

  • cool im growing the same

  • They're the best tasting onions and can be used for everything from onion rings to making a gravy....... Donald

  • Some good looking onions!

  • Started pulling this years crop. Got a few hundred pounds curing now and plenty left in the garden....... Donald

  • Your videos are great. Im not trying to get all in your business, but r u married? You do an awful amount of work. Just wondering if u get help sometime. Any kids or grand kids to put to work out there?? Take a load off!! I know you work hard and diligently.

    Great job!!

  • It's pretty much a one man operation and yes I am married...... Donald

  • Well you are THE MAN!!

  • Can you grow onions in hot weather?

It been 90 - 100 degrees out here in Calif. for the last few days.

  • I do grow green onions all year long but never plnated regular onions this late. Give it try, you never know....... Donald

  • I tried planting regular bulb onions back in early April. They all spouted and looked good but all later dies out. Maybe I made mistake by planting them on mounds. I think the soil drained out too much between waterings. Everything else that I planted in the same bed did well including the spinach and radishes.

Now its onto Carots and Peppers...

  • Sorry to hear about the onions. It's way too late for carrots in my area....... Donald

  • Do you know if there would be a problem planting onions right now (mid May)? I'm in Georgia and didn't think I was going to do onions, but now i'm going to try. From what I've read starting a little late isn't necessarily bad, but I will just be behind. Thanks for your videos.

  • I do grow green onions all year long but never plnated regular onions this late. Give it try, you never know....... Donald

  • Thanks a lot for the info. It's my first year growing vegetables and I've gotten most of my help from youtubers. So your videos are a great learing tool. I'll be watching for more.

  • how would u know if the onions are ready to get picked out.

  • The tops will fall over and I also go by their size.

  • your dog is cute and nice onions

  • That puppy can get into a lot of trouble real quick. I think she's part monkey and part theif.

  • I always heard the same thing about Hybrid seeds, you don't really know what you'll get.

  • Candy is a hybrid sweet onion. Like I said I'm going to try starting my bulbs from seeds purchased online. I've never tried to harvest the seed. Give it a try it may work.

  • The variety is "Candy". I buy the bulbs online, expensive in my opinion but just about every bulb will come up if planted correctly. They do make a seed head but I've never tried harvesting the seed. This year I'm going to try to start my own bulbs from seed (purchased online) in a section of my garden. Once the bulbs reach about 1/2 -- 3/4 inch I'll them transplant em to my onions rows spacing them about 8-12 inches apart. IMHO 6 inches apart is a little too close for an onion this size.

  • maybe i'll have to move back to evangeline parrish /// man chere i miss cajun food and gardening. north texas has some of the worst soil i have ever seen, it's pitiful, they call it black dirt (not soil, it's that bad) // and no crawfish either...

  • You just can't take the Cajun out the boy! Went eat out in Lafayette last night and we had shrimp, fried alligator, frog legs, crawfish and plenty of our favorite beverages. Let me stop, I'm getting hungry again. Come on home chere, we miss you.

  • did you eat at lanieaux's out by acadiana mall?

  • Prejean's off 49.

  • Oh, I wish I had the space to grow onions...maybe next year! Those onions look awesome!

  • The rows you saw in the video was a test plot. The bulbs were just thrown into a furrow and covered up. Only about 1 in 4 came up. The last 4 rows, which you didn't see, the bulbs were actually planted the right way and spaced about 6 inches apart. Just about every one of those came up. Approx. 30-40 feet would produce enough onions for the average family.

  • AMAZIN onions!!

im still workin on my spring onions, lol

I dont think i will attempt to grow those big ones this year, but they looked great!

    nice to see ya again!

  • IMO onions are one of the easiest things to grow in the garden. Fertilize, plant em then pull em. Don't even have to worry about insects.

  • Wow, those are some big onions! Can they be stored for very long in a root cellar or something so you don't have to eat them all at once?

  • Actually there are two ways to store them. You can cut them up and put them in the freezer and they should be good for a long time. The second way is to cure them and place them in sacks or baskets and they should last a few months. Curing is simply letting them dry in the sun for a few days then bringing them inside for a couple of weeks until the tops dry out. You need a warm well ventilated area to cure them.

  • Nice onions! I still have to wait about 2 weeks before I can plant, its still to cold.

  • That big one you saw me cleaning in the video weighed in at 1.25 lbs. They average about a pound. This variety "Candy" is a semi-sweet onion that's great on a burger, onion rings and for cooking in a gravy. Once cured they hold very well. I'm very impressed with em.

  • Awesome, your videos are so helpful. I can't wait to start vegetable gardening.

  • Learning from my mistakes was and still is my best teacher. Once you get the basics you'll be amazed how easy it is. Keep it simple.

  • Very cool. Those onions were HUGE!

  • Naturally not all are that big, just about 80% of em.
