I saw this episode on late-night TV as a teenager, and the memory of it has freaked me out for over 20 years. Glad I looked at it again today, it's not nearly as scary as I remembered, especially since I found out June Foray was the voice of the doll (all I have to do is think of Rocky the Flying Squirrel, which she also voiced).  But in my head, I kept thinking it was Jack Klugman in the Telly Savalas role. Did he just never grow hair? Has he always been bald??

The real-life inspiration for this was "Chatty Cathy", which was a talking doll first sold in the early 1960s. To make her talk, you pulled a string that came out of her back, which retracted as she spoke. You could change a small record-like disc and she'd say different stuff. The commercials for Chatty Cathy were annoying and as a kid, I thought of torching one of them and listening to its voice gradually become distorted till it stopped, as she melted.
