B-52 engines are tougher than airliner engines. Sure they use more fuel, but they resist battle damage and the pressure of high-speed, low-level flying better. Sould one of those 8 little engines get shot out and disintegrate, it will do less damage to the whole aircraft than an exploding bigger one would. That might be why the Air Force still uses 8 little engines instead of 4 larger ones.
Makes my stomach turn to hear the announcer say "Listen and you can hear the sound of freedom." B-52's don't sound like freedom to the innocents getting killed by the bombs dropped on them to steal their oil.
I'm a vet and I love my country, but the military industrial complex and the domestic enemies that have ALREADY conquered us - are not my country and that gang of thieves in DC is not my government.
We are a nation of slaves & idiots fat, dumb, & think we're happy.
that bloody thing keeps flying over my house (farnborough air show, UK) the whistle behind it is always so high pitched, and it always has black smoke trailing behind it, hmmm......
@lildanc dont moan and just fucking deal with it, its thanks to these countrys that the aircraft belong to, that people like us in the UK (US allies) we have very good defenses, and defense doesnt come quietly, so would you rather put up with just noise or get bombed the fuck out of yourself ? i rest my case, fucking BELLEND
I saw one come in low on the way to work a few years back there was a SAC base near by. I left for work early because of a rush start and was riding my Yamaha 550 Maxim.
The sky had just started to lighten and I came around a curve that opened on a small valley and field there about 300 to 500 feet high and flying very slow was a green and gray BUFF It looked like a flying demon as it came sailing over the mist.
if the pilots real good.. im mean really good! why he'll barrel that babey in so low! YOU OUTA SEE IT HAHAHAH BIG PLANE LIKE THE 52 VRROOOOM!!! LIKE FLYIN CHICKENS IN A BARN YARD HAHAHA!! (Dr. Strangleove)
The USAF was going to do a RERP program until some good ol boys wanted to keep the nostalgic sound of them.
They will get new engines soon, just like the C5 did. It just cost too much to fly B52's anymore and the USAF hates the fuel burn rate of them, another reason KC-135's got GE CFM56 engines.
Um, that was called a "High Speed Pass" but that is not really as fast as it can go. A B-52 can fly around 430mph at 300 to 400 feet off the ground. That is moving pretty quick for a plane its size with a load of bombs. Get up to higher altitudes (35,000) and it can fly at mach .86 or 650mph. That is pretty close to the speed of sound. Also, not a well known fact but the Buff can reach an altitude of 68,000 feet. Try to fly at that altitude with your small plane....
Are you kidding? The B-52 was designed over 50 years ago, can bomb the hell out a place and can still go about .9 mach. What do you want? The B-1B is large, but goes supersonic, the sr-71 is large but goes supersonic...
Hmm 4 B2 - that might b the high speed.
