Granted this video is old but I still wanted to comment. Leaving the door open for ppl who are not a part of a Greek lettered org if a bad ideas in my opinion. Almost every post was based on assumption, personal experience, biases and not really facts. People brought up hazing but being a senior in college I know that most campus orgs haze, isnt limited to Black Greeks or Greeks at all for that matter. I've gone to both an HBCU and a predominately white school where I know that honor societies,
And having said that. There is no real reason to join a greek organization no more than there is a real reason to join a church or eat at a certain restaurant or date someone. You have stated correctly Greek organizations except the Deltas(they have service in their charter) is a social organization. If you have a hard time meeting new people then this may be something for you. And lastly, there are more than 9 greek organizations.
These organization lose a lot of good people because of the violence. People have the attendence to see more of the hazing than community service because it is brought to the attention by news media.
I like this video and I wish a lot of people who have crossed over can see this. When it comes to Hazing it's an everyday thing whether we like to admit to it or not. I feel like as a prospect or gdi it's best we do our research. People have to understand when you plan on JOINING ANY ORG understand it's a business. I agree that many people join fraternities or sororities to complete themselves. So many "ugly" women seek to join sororities so that they can be recognized as pretty. If you are truly ugly then joining a sorority will not make you pretty... at all!

I have read about secret societies in Africa and other places and while some of their membership dynamic is similar to any sisterhood/brotherhood, we are certainly not a secret society. Key word being "secret."

It is up to the individual. You do what you want to do. It is purely free will. I will say some are extreme as in all religions. But it is what it is.

I am apart of an organization and no I am not greek. TO me you sound like a rejected individual. They join n say oh it's not what I expected it 2b but what hav u done to make a difference?
Back in the early 1900s many joined becuz that was the only way for blacks to meet and discuss black issues/struggles on campus in huge numbers (they needed a greek affiliation to not be bothered by college officials) i believe most people of today want to join for recognition and acceptance. I apologize for you not being able to join. Thank you for not only seing our negative( b/c we have some, just like everything else in life) and our positive. They need mor people like this, who are real with themselves n others. What blows me the most is people say they wudn't join b/c of the negative n then mention church. Are they aware that they have wicked pastors/churches..does that mean 2 dis own the lord or christianity al together?

I would be apart of a greek organization no matter what these Seventh Day Adventists church family will say about it. Sure it will keep me for going to church on the Sabbath to spend more time with the brothers of the fraternity, but garanutee you guys the lord will still bless me no matter what!

That is not true. You decide when you participate in activities. If you cant make it on Saturdays then communicate that with your prospective ch and I'm sure they will understand!

ok and what about hazing? those same characteristics u jus listed non greek people have. Why does it seem as if you feel like because people are apart of a Gree lettered org they suddenly develop those negative attributes? High dues, don't you pay to be apart of other stuff. Don't you pay for cable, if you have it. If you join any professional org that deals with your career you will pay dues... why does it seem like you have a personal bias?

I am apart of an organization and no I am not greek. TO me you sound like a rejected individual. There is no way in the world you can have that much animosity towards something you know absolutely nothing about. My family is bred on Masonic Affiliations and Greek Life. They ARE ALL EDUCATED, WELL RESPECTED, GOD FEARING, VALUE having individuals.

STARS, and my Greek Counterparts. The reason you don't see it is because they don't broadcast it. What you do in private, GOD will reward you openly.
Greek Life helps those become better individuals. If you have a problem with people get a better sense of their self worth than your fault.

You need to find some with in yourself and stop down grading what you dont know. I see people do the same things you mention with no type of affiliationso what are their excuses. Do some people get attitudes yes? But they dont represent the whole. They have a sense of accomplishment. Why dont you go learn and figure that one out.

cont...your community : in that case, stop all of the step shows, line jackets, etc...and see how many people still join your organizations...i don't see many black greeks joining the RED cross if they are so concerned with helping the community 2) many people join because it is popular and a COOL THING TO DO NOW AND BEFORE (everybody is doing it - don't play like you don't know what the true game - people want to emulate the greeks for WHATEVER REASON) 3) the connections that you people make

HONESTLY...as a non-greek...there ARE NO ADVANTAGES from really joing a "black" greek organization because YOU ALL REPRESENT something NEGATIVE ON A SPIRITUAL REALM...most of you wear your letters MORE THAN YOU WEAR YOUR OWN SPIRITUALITY: (GOD)....yet you say you were founded on Christian principles: WHAT ARE THEY: i'm waiting because I have yet to find someone to tell me what they are: also, let's talk about why being greek is bad for you: 1) being greek has nothing to do with trying to better

i like the video man both parts. I'm not greek but i know a bunch of older members in fraternities (old heads) problems with greek life is that people join it for the wrong reasons and are chosen for the wrong reasons. This causes the frat/sorority to become a little more watered down. I actually like what the AKA said at the end of part two, "everyone is not ment to be greek" that applied to me i tried all three years of my college career but i still have love for the frat. cuz

Have u taken advantage of the resources n opps that r offered? Hav u created r contributed 2ways to enhance the org? When I was in skool, I made sure I asked prospects in interviews, what can my org/ch can improve in. If u can think of things to bring us 2 da next level...why r u here? We good but can always do better, in every facet. It's simple, we make the letters the letters don't make us.

Prospects seem 2b excited wit the ideals that our orgs r build upon but don't understand dat they hav to carry out those same ideals in order 4da org, dat what can it do 4me attitude. It's a mutual relationship in Greekdom but b/c we hav a lot of people joining wit their hands out, not willing to give; we are falling off. They join n say oh it's not what I expected it 2b but what hav u done to make a difference?

Back in the early 1900s many joined becuz that was the only way for blacks to meet and discuss black issues/struggles on campus in huge numbers (they needed a greek affiliation to not be bothered by college officials) i believe most people of today want to join for recognition and acceptance. Thanks on the comp:) It's funny u mentioned dat people reason 4joining is changing. I can def agree; however, I think there's a lot people who really desire for a since of belong to something rather than being accepted. It may sound like a play on words but there's a slight difference..lol
