Granted there are open-source applications that are clearly outclassed by their proprietary relatives (not that you can really complain about something being free), there -are- some good ones out there. PHP, MySQL, UNIX and UNIX-like systems, Android, Firefox, and Google Chrome are just a few that I can think off the top of my head.
