Yes, it is German. It was not unusual for straight guys to wear leatherpants in public. Whenever you went out, you could find them. Some were looking really hot!!! I know there was a big leather boom through the 80's and that continued into the 90's where everyone suddenly started owning leather jackets and then jeans, so I guess now its so common its not special anymore and out of fashion. I think people associate it with being gay because its a very flamboyant material.
