I just saw the Recobbled version into. I don't like it compared to this. It was nice work, but I wasn't familiar with it. I grew up with this version so much better. Plus the thief actually talks.
I just saw the re cobbled version... I like that intro, but i prefer Mathew Broderic's voice in this as the narrator. I think it's him, sounds like him. and the recobbled version has extended and different scenes... can't we somehow combine the two? oh well
I have always loved this movie. Tack is is absolutely adorable, Yum Yum is very forward and independent for this time period of movie, and you won't find a movie quite like this one anywhere else.
Idk what people find so bad about this version. It's the version I grew up with. (true it's not the greatest) but it's actually decent. I've seen the recobbled version and i prefer this one more.
To me, this is the kind of movie where i'll gladly mute the audio to be able to enjoy the animation. It's basically all the makes this movie valuable to be honest. although i'm sure the storytelling would've been great too if it weren't for the troubled production.
I grew up with this movie and I adore it , but I don't see why so many people complain about the movie ..
The movie is meant for younger viewers , so of course they aren't going to drag it out and make it longer than needed , children won't follow along as well as the older viewers .
If you guys don't like it then keep quiet and carry on with life , stop complaining , you ruin the enjoyment of the movie . -:c
@COBRARocky You make an interesting point. Your comment has opened my eyes to the possibility that maybe Richard Williams didn't care whether his film was profitable or not, he just cared about making a work of art. Of course, I could be wrong about that. I believe if he had been able to finish it, it would not have found a large enough audience and it would've been a flop. But that's just my opinion. Of course we'll never know.
I think that this version is reall funny. I haven't seen the other one completely through so I can't compare them. You see, I love comedy and silly characters. That's what peaks my interests. I'm sure the other version is amazing, aspecially with the original cuts and the ability to use your imagination for what you think the characters are thinking, but again, I'm a sucker for funny things and music. Any way, I love this movie. :) Tee hee.
You know what? Every SINGLE thing in this movie was HAND DRAWN and HAND ANIMATED. So you can hate it if you want, I'm going to love both versions for what they are. Lovely, and a piece of story board art.
Holy cow! I remember this from when I was like 5! I had memories of this movie for so long but could never remember the name! Thank you SO MUCH for posting!

oh and every single version is based of f an anichent story of a culture that is great and proud so every damn movie there is is a remake of an old old old legend and story!

I've said this before, but I have parts that I like from both this version and the uncut version. I'd be happy so see a remake that was a middle ground between the two. (As in, no narrating from Tack, being able to still hear the thief's thoughts, I'll leave it up to them if there should be songs or not, keeping the story a bit longer and less cramped together, and still having the nanny look down on the relationship until tack proved himself)
No wonder I loved this movie so much as a child! The hero is Simba! xD I wish they would re-release this movie. I'd love to have it on dvd. I haven't seen this film since I was 6!
@SarresaDreamer Well when this remake was released in 1995 there was a lot of arguing that they copied Aladdin (right spelling) when really this movie has gone through like three decades of creating and stuff
@arexyouxepicxenough I wish they had gone "all out" for the recobbled version; instead of storyboards and half-finished animation, completed animation that fits in flawlessly with the old animation. And maybe a re-recording of Tak's voice at the very end of the movie, when he says "I love you"; the old man voice coming out of the young man mouth is very jarring. But yes; the recobbled version is much more better than this piece of rushed garbage.
Dear god... After watching the original, this is just unbearable... They took something of a masterpeice, stripped it down and re-hased for a pre teen audience. I hate my life
@SarresaDreamer Look up the Re-Cobbled" version. Dunno how much you know about this movies history, but it was originally made sometime in the 70's. And since every, single, frame of the movie was drawn by hand, it was in production for over 20 years. So yeah. After the studio dropped the project, it was picked up by whoever owns it now and basically wrecked it
@ClydeBishop If I'm not mistaken, this edition was the intended result. The "original" is the unbearable re-hashed one. However, I may indeed be mistaken.
@ClydeBishop Why are you watching this if you are just going to complain about it. They are almost the same except a few scenes taken out and many scenes added. I think its kinda nice being able to watch different versions of it. This one sheds a lot more light on the possible thoughts going on in the movie. The original does leave more to the imagination though
@ClydeBishop This version wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for the internal monologues and narrations. I kind of like Matthew Broderick (not all the time; just in The Producers and Music Man), but while watching this all I want to do is scream "SHUT UP!!!!" at his character.
The thief is my favorite character in this movie! I like Yum Yum and Tack too but I like the thief more! His voice actor make the movie more exciting! ^^
Oh my god, I've been looking for this movie for FOREVER! My dad bought it for me when I was little and for the life of me I couldn't remember what it was called. I've been googling like crazy trying to find it.
Figures I'd come across it after giving up the search and by old-cartoon-hopping on Youtube. Thank you so much for uploading it!
I love this version of the movie, but it's so impossible to find. The Thief is the most hilarious character. I tried watching it without the added voices and it just wasn't the same.
No offense to the recobbled version, but I remember this movie because the thief is epically hilarious. And it's Matthew Broderick as the cobbler. Thank you for uploading this!
Vincent price (the voice of zigzag) is one of the best villain/scary actors. It's sad that this version was the last film he accomplished before he died.
I enjoy this version the most, granted I think they could have added alot more scenes from the original animation to help the plot. The thief and the cobbler having voices makes it so much more enjoyable to watch, though I don't know why they needed the songs.
@Sesshigirl I personally found it more enjoyable with Tack and the thief being silent. In this version it's so obvious they didn't trust kids to enjoy moments of silence and that's really condescending.
i see, Miramax thot the original movie focused too much on the art of the movie instead of entertainment, so they added zany music, wacky sound effects, cut out the "boring parts" and added talking. LOTS OF TALKING
I agree with everyone else that said that Jonathan Winters as the Thief is funny, just not sure why they decided to gave him a "voice" in the last minute.
b/c then the audience would spend the entire time wondering. "Why is he seen so much in the movie? He never says anything." for me, i'm one of those people who is always wondering, "What on earth was he thinking?! Why would he do something like that???"
This vesion is way better then the recobbled version, since it has voices for the thief and the cobbler, instead of bland voiceless scenes, and it doesn't have any scenes removed from it to make te story move confusing.
@HackofCKC True but some details become more obvous as the story goes on. For example we already knew Tack was gonna fall in love with Yum-Yum before they sing their song duet.
@HackofCKC oh yeah cuz we totally need some random guy narrating what we can obviously see is happening with the aid of lame jokes. ever heard of "visual story telling"? jesus u wanna add a voice track to all the characters in Fantasia while youre at it?
@HackofCKC That's a pretty close minded view isn't it? The movie was intended as a more artistic film with the characters movements and the animation telling the story rather then words.
@ThisCakeIsAPie I don't see how my post is close minded, its a personal preference. I prefer to have fully animated scenes over pencil colorless drawings that don't move.
@HackofCKC actually sometimes its better that a character never talk and the music and the characters actions tell the story instead. If you really need voices to understand whats going on you may not be very open minded enough to watch such things.
@HackofCKC I personally adore them being voiceless. The idea is that a voiceless character using their actions and facial gestures to convey their feelings. I listened to the Recobbled version, and found that it was more superior. It actually gave the story more depth with the silent Tack and the thief. Either way, I find it depressing how this was taken from someone who had spent most of his life working on it, sloppily put together and thrown out without his consent.
@TheMetalDot Thats right! Matthew Broadwick is telling the story :) I was like "Hello Simba! What are you doing at an Arabian type place?? Get back to Africa!" rofl XD
ah so i didn't forget the cobbler and thief could talk- i just grew up watching a different version- i dont mind either versions though but it is weird hearing the Cobbler talking when the voice actor is Simba- let alone the thief but meh, its nice to watch it again. So thanks for the upload

I enjoy this version the most, granted I think they could have added alot more scenes from the original animation to help the plot. The thief and the cobbler having voices makes it so much more enjoyable to watch, though I don't know why they needed the songs.
Sesshigirl 5 months ago
@Sesshigirl I personally found it more enjoyable with Tack and the thief being silent. In this version it's so obvious they didn't trust kids to enjoy moments of silence and that's really condescending.

i see, Miramax thot the original movie focused too much on the art of the movie instead of entertainment, so they added zany music, wacky sound effects, cut out the "boring parts" and added talking. LOTS OF TALKING
so basically, Miramax pulled a 4kids :D

Are college kids that poor that they have to live in a cobler shop!? If that's how things were back then I'm happy that I live in the modern times.

LOL Jonathan Winters adds a hilarious commentary as the Theif!

I agree with everyone else that said that Jonathan Winters as the Thief is funny, just not sure why they decided to gave him a "voice" in the last minute.

@avickers1992
b/c then the audience would spend the entire time wondering. "Why is he seen so much in the movie? He never says anything." for me, i'm one of those people who is always wondering, "What on earth was he thinking?! Why would he do something like that???"
Lakeanonalani 3 months ago in playlist The Thief and the Cobbler
This vesion is way better then the recobbled version, since it has voices for the thief and the cobbler, instead of bland voiceless scenes, and it doesn't have any scenes removed from it to make te story move confusing.
HackofCKC 6 months ago 7
@HackofCKC True but some details become more obvous as the story goes on. For example we already knew Tack was gonna fall in love with Yum-Yum before they sing their song duet.
avickers1992 6 months ago
@HackofCKC oh yeah cuz we totally need some random guy narrating what we can obviously see is happening with the aid of lame jokes. ever heard of "visual story telling"? jesus u wanna add a voice track to all the characters in Fantasia while youre at it?

Whoah, way to read my post.
Did you miss the part where I talked about dragons and how the thief is a representation for god ?
HackofCKC 6 months ago
@HackofCKC O_o the f*ck r u talking about?
doseiaisha 6 months ago
@HackofCKC That's a pretty close minded view isn't it? The movie was intended as a more artistic film with the characters movements and the animation telling the story rather then words.
ThisCakeIsAPie 4 months ago
@ThisCakeIsAPie I don't see how my post is close minded, its a personal preference. I prefer to have fully animated scenes over pencil colorless drawings that don't move.
HackofCKC 4 months ago
@HackofCKC actually sometimes its better that a character never talk and the music and the characters actions tell the story instead. If you really need voices to understand whats going on you may not be very open minded enough to watch such things.
VgplayerinME 3 months ago 2
@HackofCKC I personally adore them being voiceless. The idea is that a voiceless character using their actions and facial gestures to convey their feelings. I listened to the Recobbled version, and found that it was more superior. It actually gave the story more depth with the silent Tack and the thief. Either way, I find it depressing how this was taken from someone who had spent most of his life working on it, sloppily put together and thrown out without his consent.
