  • Easy for a norwegian :D I never understood why "ll" becomes tl, though.

  • Comment removed

  • @ObLiViOnZThEkIllEr Yeah, the double L had given me away as a swede...It won't now though!

Wonder how the danes cope with the pronounciation of this the first time tho^^

  • @GokoJuji They would still sound like they had certain things stuck in their throat, haha :P

  • @maggitrymbill You should do videos that translate common phrases in Icelandic, t.d. Hann er einn á bátinn. Ég er að flytja til íslands í sumar, og er að reyna að læra daglegt tal.

  • Fuck Skyrim, lets all go to Iceland! :D

  • cute guy.

  • HE IS NORD!

  • I can pronounce Reykjavik,,,,but I cant spell it...LOL

  • forget it man.. i need classes just to pronounce that name lol

  • Why are L's pronounced like K's or something? :(

  • @vihannes3 It's kind of a glottal plosive.

  • i can see your strings...

  • for me it says: "the fucking volcano, who fucked my holiday" :D

  • if u got that than try this hæstaréttarmálaflutningsmaður

  • @annoiyngvideos321 what the....?? :( can you upload another video for that one? Or better: try to explain Icelandic pronunciation rules?

  • Have you ever considered teaching some Icelandic through videos?

Not random phrases, but actual short lessons: the alphabet, grammar, etc.

It would help a lot of us who are learning Icelandic by ourselves.

  • @ijansk Not really, but that's a good idea. I might look into that. What's the hardest thing you've found about the Icelandic language?

  • @maggitrymbill Thanks for replying. Well, declensions take a lot of time, but you could begin with the alphabet (consonant clusters included). Then you could go with declensions (genders, endings and one example per ending: ur, ll, a an, ið, etc, cases and so on).

I hope you can make your Icelandic lessons videos in the near future, just go at your pace^^

  • @maggitrymbill Why doesn't the "t" sound have a letter? Or does it? And if so, why isn't it used? It misleads the name quite a whole damn lot. Anyway, props to you! ^-^

  • i pronounces this right before i even heard it :D and i dont know icelandic :O! :)

  • My Skyrim character looks like you :P

  • @Mandragara My skyrim didn't run well.

  • @taxi911 Turn down graphics settings or upgrade computer :)

  • @Mandragara hmmmm, how do i turn down graphics settings?

I have a laptop, not much to upgrade. I have 6GB Ram, 2.4ghz i3-370M processor, and NVIDIA GeForce 310M. Don't laugh at me, it's enough to get me by for everything (except for games) :-p.

  • "Qantas grounds entire fleet worldwide." and I thought the volcano's name was damaging.

  • The Eyjafjallajokull Poem:

Eyjafjallajokull is a strange word for many, all the reporters could not pronounce it, but our dear Eyfjallajokull, was nice enough to give us Grimsvotn, to rest the toungues of all the reporters, who had enough of Eyjafjallajokull.!!

  • this is the best video showing how to pronounce that!

thank you so much, because of you now my icelanders friends wont laugh at me :P

(untill the next complicated volcano eraoption)

  • That's like LL in Welsh?! How weird.

I thought we were the only language with that sound. :(

  • i just hope the next thing happening in Iceland wont be the flood of Hafnarfjörður XD so to force you to teach us another word pronounciation x3..(im joking! i dont mean to be offensive! XD)

  • I have to give a presentation on this volcano in a few days, and the presentation contains the word 34 times... still can't get it right :(

  • @lukas1051 Feel free to have me saying it and play that each time, instead of saying it yourself :)

  • @maggitrymbill Hmmmmn, no I think I'm getting it... just a tongue twister to say :P the video's helpful though :)

  • @maggitrymbill hahaha, djöfulsins meistari!

  • I'll just call it 'Bob' lol

  • @TheEhmJayCee Do you waste energy by typing on a keyboard?

  • @TheEhmJayCee Very funny, human trash. Small and extremely rare misspellings occur from time to time, and I don't like it when useless sub-human trash whines about it.

  • its like LLANELLI!

  • you look like a vampire, with sabertooth's hair :D

  • AYA - FYATLA - YUURKLKSH

  • Awesome, thanks for the vid! I'm going to be hiking up to Goðasteinn on April 9th, so good to be able to pronounce the name of the glacier I am going to be climbing.

  • Do you have to move your lips aside when saying jokull?

  • did you record this video in the toilet? lol and someone must be pissed at naming all the volcanos in the world, so i guess that person must have slam his keyboard to get this name, cos he didn't thought it would erupt and get media attention! LOL

  • Haha I'm Swedish so I never had any problem pronoucing any Icelandic words. I feel sorry for all non-Nordics trying to pronounce that.

  • Ll in Icelandic makes the same sound as "tl" in Náhuatl (or as Europeans call it - Aztec language).

  • dude you got that viking look down to a tee! love it! althoug, despite you putting this tutorial up - i still can't pronouce it! lol.

  • Takk! Icelandic is my favorite language I don't speak.

  • omfg my continent was destroyed by an icelandic volcano and I didn't even know! haha

  • ProNUNciation, not proNOUNciation ;].

  • @MattiAndSelen WRONG, It IS PRONOUNCIATION, not the Americanised shit-version Pronunciation. Learn som ENGLISH.

  • @workatthefarm Uh... okay, I didn't realize that's how you pronounce it. But that doesn't make the American way wrong... quit hatin' on the 'mericans okrrr?

  • @MattiAndSelen YES, it makes the American way wrong, English is English, and it comes from England. Not America.

  • try renaming it to "WHO THE FUCK CARES, YOUR GONNA DIE" that might clear somethings up

  • thanx i need to know it for a presentation at school =]

  • simply like aye (justin Bieber's ay-ay-ay in one time) y then a don't like english a just like when you scream when you're scared (: we've got aye-ya- fyalla (every a is like when you're scared like AAAAAA it's so scary or something hehe) aye-ya-fjalla-yu ( the o is like when you thinking like "uuuuhh no" or something like that not english o) aye-ya-fyalla-yokull there ya go (; eyjafjallajökull -aye-yafyalla-yokull :D like this if it helped ya :D

  • in other news: Nothing

  • This whole "TL" thing... I wish I spoke Icelandic. o.o Stupid English... XD

  • This is hysterical!

Honestly one of the fumiest things I have seen in awhile!

    Thank you Icelandic Guy!

  • hahahahahhaha

  • Well, sort of... like you pointed out :p

  • so with a double 'l' you pronounce the first one as a 't'.... Thanks for this vid, FINALLY i know how to pronounce it!

  • Hahahah you are so damn cute when you say the "thkh" : D

  • destroyed europe LoL whats going on in iceland xD

  • Its not a volcano, its a glacier. "Jökull" means glacier. The volcano is underneath.

  • how do you say fat ass in icelandic?

  • @JohnnyCagePro ahhahahahaha assklikklik XD

  • Brock Lesnar

  • "destroying europe" haha

  • Wow you look so cool man!

  • @tibor29 mwhahahahahaha XD awesome :D

  • Eya..... (like a cokney would say "hi")......Fiat (some peoples fafourite car, but with the I soft'ned....fyat).....LA.....(think of a musical note!).....Yocut.....(as in yogurt, but with a C instead of a G!).....LL.....(think of petal, but just say the "tal" bit, however, you whisper it while vibrating your tounge!! .....Like the double L in welsh!! Once you've got it,it rolls off your tounge!!

  • Very helpful/ The "ll" sound is related to a "kl" sound from what you are saying, and that makes sense. We have the "lk" sound as in yolk and folk but the "kl" sound as in specta-cle. i would expect somr icelandic influence in english no matter how slight.

  • @jehovajah

"some icelandic influence in english? For info Icelandic is generally held to be the closest living language to Old English the English spoken in England up to 1066. After that English became more simplified and acquired a lot of french and latin influence. The words we use in every day are still very close to the Scandinavian languages and German and Dutch. Like English, Norwegian although a close relative of Icelandic is much simpler - whole sentences similar to English often.

  • you look like santa...:-)

  • Jesus christ, the Icelandic language is close to impossible to learn. That's terrible, I've been wanting to move there all my life :(

  • eyafiatlayocotl

Nahuatl language, a language spoken in Mexico has also that Icelandic "ll" sound written as "tl" so a lot of Mexicans could pronounce it correctly

  • Thanks Magnus! I'm from Serbia so it's not as hard to pronounce this but nevertheless I'm gonna go surprised my icelandic friend with my newfound knowledge! Thanks again bro!

  • haha..cute man :D

  • Did I detect the ghost of a smile after "...and destroyed Europe" ? LOL

btw, I can pronounce it exactly as shown here - after a while it trips off the tongue nicely !

  • I love that accent, I swear.

  • Teddy Behr!

  • @magorianworld HAHAHA xD

  • Hmm. Would you say that the last sound, the click, is similar to the hiss-like "ch" sound in German? Or is it its own sound?

  • THX dude :D first one that does it right ;) haha not 2 be a bitch but u look like a hobbit xD

  • @magorianworld hahahaha snilli.

  • you're cute :)

  • !xobile

  • hobbit!

  • hahahaha skondiiiið

  • icelandic is probably one of the better sounding languages in the world. however, this word still kills me

  • god this guy is WHITE.

  • A-HA you mis-pronounced pronunciation.

  • LOL. Mate that was classic, at the end. Love it. Great video, I would have given it five stars. Absolutely.

  • Did he actually say the volcano has recently destroyed Europe??

    :-)

  • Well I guess that clears everything up. Except it really doesn’t. We could just use your soundbite whenever the name needs to be said. Whoever makes the Icelandic Rosetta Stone tutorial is going to shit themselves trying to teach this. Iceland has edged out Hawai'i and Africa for hardest to pronounce noun. Iceland for the win.

  • the only time an icelander is actually needed in an international context

  • I think the hardest part of people to wrap their brains around is the double "LL", however, I bet the welsh could pronounce the name better, since they have the same sound with their LL.

The LL sound is pronounced by grasping the sides of your tongue with your molars and aspirating an "H". Those of you who speak Klingon will know this sound as "TL"

  • The two "l" as similar to the pronouniation of LL in Welsh.

  • secure the borders!!!!

    from terrorist Iceland volcano!!!!!

  • Thank you ! *S*

  • looks like blonde shay carl

  • how do you pronounce eyjafjallajökull

  • exquisite :)

  • the volcano is now diamonds!

  • :33-:39 he actually pronounces it :55-:57

  • Oh ok. Yes, it's easy now.... :-/

  • The pronunciation from Wikipedia is very different from the one in your video, but most people say it's perfect. Why?

  • @1000jamesk

probobly becuse no one that works in wikipedia knows icelandic

they probobly googled the answers them self ^^

  • you're sympathic =D

  • haha loved the end

  • u look like me left ball

  • i'm brazilian and i think it's so easy to pronunce it...

And we, from brazil, speak the latin language (portuguese), like spanish and italian. And i can't undersant how the britsh's and americans can't pronunce it so easy when they speak the anglo-saxons language too, seems like equal... the same language essence...

I really sorry my poor english!

  • @blusismylife

For the record, Icelandic is more similar to Norwegian as it is a nordic language. It's probably difficult for many people because it is structurally different to most words in the English language, and in fact ends in a syllable that is not used in the English language at all.

  • @blackhawk242 Icelandic is kinda similar to Norwegian but there's a lot of minor differences. I can speak Icelandic and i have a minor grasp to Norwegian, Swedish and Danish. but the closest language by far is Faroese.

and Icelandic is a very, very hard language to learn and pronounce especially since you can't really sound it out phonetically. and even for Icelandic speaker, Eyjafjallajökull is pretty tough to say.

  • I'm still having a hard time, but this was definitely helpful.

  • @HichiroJappy Of course, to see little elves (if I understand you correctly) running around you need to 1. Believe in them, really hard or 2. Be an insane person :D

  • @HichiroJappy Ahh, sure. Some people say that there are pixies here. Personally I don't believe in that. Regarding a school, I haven't heard of it :)

  • @HichiroJappy Pixies the band? I've never heard of anything about Pixies or a Pixie school in Iceland. Not sure what you're talking about :)

  • @HichiroJappy I find german pretty easy to learn, it's pretty easy compared to what I natively speak: estonian

  • The pronounce is almost impossible aha xD, here news just used to say "the Icelandic volcano xD" but honestly you have a face that make me thinking to something like " a good warrior with his hammer " from Norse mythology , it gave me a good impression aha :) greetings from Italy.

  • 0:53

  • @HichiroJappy I don't know much German, never did learn it in school. But some people say that Icelandic is hard to learn, some people say it's easy. It's got close relations with Norwegian and Danish but with harder grammar perhaps.

  • @HichiroJappy The grammar is kinda rough, but I don't think it's that difficult .. but what do I know, I've spoken it all my life :)

  • the volcano was recently renamed BOB

  • @raulsaenz i thought it was kevin? but you can not rename our volcano/glacier/mountain! (read with a viking accent) Eyjafjallajökull is such a cool name! it's unique, just like any other unpronounceable mountain out there!

  • you can choose to write jökull or jokull for e.g. eyjafjallajokull or eyjafjallajökull

  • Comment removed

  • is it jökull or jokull? or is the ö replaced with o just for the english pepz

  • @norelon Yeah, replaced with o for English pepz :) It's written jökull in Icelandic.

  • @maggitrymbill are you icelanic?!?!?!

    cool if u are

  • @wavepadsoundeditor Yes I am.
