A simple strike may be devastating, but you can also hurt yourself pretty bad, and elbow can take much, but not everything. so a good technique is umportant to keep the damage low. also, you'd deal more damage while using less power and be less exposed by using a good technique. I dont wanna mention elbow combos. Arent they illegal? I mean, to die because of some hard elbow strikes is quite likely.
