Nah, it works as a funny scene, but in reality ANY chief engineer would KNOW 20'th century computers probably are very crude and far from automated.
Even though nobody uses steam locomotives anymore most people know it takes some time for the boiler to build up enough steam pressure, and it's not like just getting inside and driving off like with electric or diesel locomotives. Starting a Ford Model T was pretty cumbersome too. Common knowledge.
