I just want to make personal comment. I came to this country 9 years ago from czech republic. I went to University in this country. Currently, I am on H1B visa for 3 years and I am being paid fair by my employer as any US citizen would be. Neither do I work extra hours. If I would not like it in this county I would just go back where I come from but I love this county and I will be here as long as I am treated fair. So H1B status for me does not mean cheap labor or overtime work.
How much do you earn? Have you founded a Fortune 500 company? Do you work for an Indian body shop? The biggest users of H1B are the Indian body shops. 85-90% earn less than 50K/year so as low as $9/hour, have at best a BS and are doing routine work not cutting edge R&D. No one is saying all H1Bs are cheap labor; only 5-10% are the rare worker types earning over 200K/year.
I just wanted to clarify some comments that have been made that not all H1B workers are underpaid. My income range is $60-$70k a year. I am an Audit Senior with three years of audit experience (200K nobody at my level makes) and I work for Deloitte and Touche, which is Fortune 500 Company.
When I started I had the same salary as everyone else who was not on H1B later it depends on your performance. So from my experience, I have not been discriminated because I am not a US citizen. If I would be underpaid, as an EU member I would work for a company in Europe without visa requirment. Peace...

In America, the rate of pay you get is indicative of how valuable corporate thinks you are. In the most recent USCIS report(FY2005), the MEDIAN wage of H1Bs admitted was $50K/year. At the 75th percentile the average wage is $60K/year. The average for non-H1Bs is well over $100K/year. I'm just saying that based on your stated wage and experience level(3 years), it doesn't apppear that you are being treated like a "rare valuable" worker. If so you would be in the $100K or upper 25 percentile.

Companies do like to save money by hiring workers for lower wages, but that's done through outsourcing and the hiring of consultants and part-timers -- not by hiring H1Bs, which are normally for full-time positions. It may be true that you can get an employee on H1B to work longer hours, but I believe at the large software product companies in Silicon Valley, H1Bs get similar salaries to their non-H1B counterparts.

I just want to make personal comment. I came to this country 9 years ago from czech republic. I went to University in this country. Currently, I am on H1B visa for 3 years and I am being paid fair by my employer as any US citizen would be. Neither do I work extra hours. If I would not like it in this county I would just go back where I come from but I love this county and I will be here as long as I am treated fair. So H1B status for me does not mean cheap labor or overtime work.

How much do you earn? Have you founded a Fortune 500 company? Do you work for an Indian body shop? The biggest users of H1B are the Indian body shops. 85-90% earn less than 50K/year so as low as $9/hour, have at best a BS and are doing routine work not cutting edge R&D. No one is saying all H1Bs are cheap labor; only 5-10% are the rare worker types earning over 200K/year.

In America, the rate of pay you get is indicative of how valuable corporate thinks you are. In the most recent USCIS report(FY2005), the MEDIAN wage of H1Bs admitted was $50K/year. At the 75th percentile the average wage is $60K/year. The average for non-H1Bs is well over $100K/year. I'm just saying that based on your stated wage and experience level(3 years), it doesn't apppear that you are being treated like a "rare valuable" worker. If so you would be in the $100K or upper 25 percentile.

I suspect you are getting paid 30% less than the going rate for a Sr. Auditor, certainly so if you have an MBA, and you have no job security. Companies use the fact that you can be deported if you lose your job to beat you over the head with, and the threat of competition from cheap H1B labor to beat citizens and green card holders over the head. Companies do like to save money by hiring workers for lower wages, but that's done through outsourcing and the hiring of consultants and part-timers -- not by hiring H1Bs, which are normally for full-time positions. It may be true that you can get an employee on H1B to work longer hours, but I believe at the large software product companies in Silicon Valley, H1Bs get similar salaries to their non-H1B counterparts.

Chips are all mostly made in Japan now. Toshiba, etc. Very few chips are made in India and USA. I believe it was Intel which had to cancel its Whitefield processor project in India because Indians couldn't do it. Google "Indian Chip Kill" and see what you find. h1b visa is a visa for talented and highly educated people to come and work in the US and pay US taxes and to be able to spend their money here in the US and contribute to economic growth. Google cofounder came from Russia. America is a land of immigration and people with dreams and talents should be able to come here and build companies, create wealth,employ people and be able to work here. People should be free to live and work where they want. Americans are free to do that between US states

L-1 via holders don't pay taxes. Indians all send their paychecks home where the exchange rate makes them into milionaires. Indians don't spend their money in the USA. Sergei Brin came to USA at *age NINE* and was educated here. He's more American than foreigner. If immigrants are contributing to US economic growth then why is the US economy in the toilet? Seems the OPPOSITE is happening. The problem is, we're not bringing in people with talents. We're bringing in the uneducated 3rd world.

As for "building companies", I have MILES of FOR LEASE signs in Silicon Valley to show anyone who thinks immigrants are good for America. America was built by HONEST, HARD-WORKING, WHITE EURO-CHRISTIAN immigrants, not faking, lying, boasting, incompetent 3rd world immigrants.
If these 3rd world immigrants are so smart then why do they need to come to USA at all? Why aren't their own countries better? Answer: they're not smarter. They are faking frauds who clean out and collapse US companies.

Improve the economy of the USA? Where is the improvement? The USA and world economy is falling apart. Funny how before you started arriving here in 1998 we Americans had things booming. Why is it that all Indians have to lie? Admit you screwed up the once-great USA. If Indians are here to improve the economy, then show me the improvement. 10 years of guest workers have been a total disaster for the USA.
