To continue my story: The day that I was walking around with a broken umbrella, I remember the fact that it was broken being pointed out to me about twenty times (just in case I hadn't already realized.) It was a funny situation, but somehow for me it called to mind a girl who lived in her own head and daydreamed, a girl that some people might see as silly but one who didn't care much what other people thought about her. That's the girl I was trying to portray here.

I'll add to what Cody said. For me, as I wrote the song, the Broken Umbrella symbolized life sometimes going in directions we don't want or expect, and the confusion we feel when life doesn't go as planned. There is also a backstory to this. A few months ago, due to some very bad luck, I was actually forced to walk around with a broken umbrella for a few days.
