i'm just a fan from him sinds yesterday and every version i hear from this song this 1 is my favorite version of it the worst version of this song is the johnny cash version cus i don't like johnny cash i think he sucks but i like tom jones he's my 3th favorite singer on 1st place it's frank sinatra & in 2nd place it's dean martin and then comes sir TOM JONES!!! :') and i'm only a 21 year old guy they say that this kind of music don't fits with my age but i don't care i even like justin bieber
@BASKETBALLJEZUS you have no taste in music if you think johnny cash sucks, he is one of the greatest country singers of all time. not the greatest but one of. if you think he sucks go fuck yourself
@fabfivegoodhue22 ok that's my opinion my fav country singer is RODNEY CARRINGTON!!! XD and i'm 21 and i'm also a JUSTIN BIEBER fan XD and if this is your opinion go a head no prob 4 me ;)
Listened to this song when I was young and liked the melody but never really listened to the words. Then one day the true meaning dawned on me and the song bcame even more poignant.

It's much better when the last verse is spoken, and the listener realizes that the upbeat cheerful lyrics of the first two verses that have been sung are "only a dream," and that the bitter fate awaits the singer. The change of pace reflects the change of mood.
But it would be better if the sung portions took place outside of the cell, perhaps in a grassy field. This video gives away the likely ending, which carries much more punch when it comes as a terrible shock.
I've been singing this song all my life....it's my all time favorite song...and im just 23...i definitely love this song so much....the power the emotion and everything about this song...aahh the good old days...when music matters unlike the music today so full of shiittttt....
@prettyjohnshill I think you're thinking of an old film, "How Green Was My Valley." Porter Wagoner, a country singer, did this first, in 1965. Tom's version is great, but then, before he got old and his voice started to go, he could do anything from Paul Anka (She's a Lady) to Prince (Kiss).
I understand how this song can make some people sad, but for me its always a burst of pure euphoria. Transports me to another place completely every time!
It was 22nd September, 1981, moments after midnight, my best friend, Lieutenant Rafique was hanged at the age of 23, a victim of an international plot by IMF to bring my country to its knees so that their prescription could be enforced.
Like this hapless character, he was in a condemn cell of Jessore Jail, Bangladesh.
''''..and did I tell you that it was his one of the most favourite songs?
Im 14, there are plenty of bands with great lyrics and vocals and melodies and harmonies, but none of them ever get onto the radio or the charts. I wish my generation got more heartfelt and brilliant songs like this.
Nothing like a dream to yank you out of a nightmare. This is what makes folk music so real, so all-encompassing. This song proves how we miss the simplest & dearest things in life when they're unreachable. The need for love & comfort transcends the lust for material things. A condemed person longs for the warmth & comfort of his home, his love & a simple albeit fulfilling life. These are the pleasures to be carved onto that ol' oak tree, & into your heart.
long live tom jones, nobody could sing this song like him. this song also brought tears to my mother and my eyes when we heard it. a fan til the day he dies and even after..
I never realized this song was about a man on death row about to be executed... "there's a guard and there's a sad old Padre, arm in arm we'll walk at daybreak..." back when I used to hear this as a child. How sad!

I remember hearing this song performed on TV when I was a child and crying in my room and not understanding why. I think it 's the sad tone of the song. But a very beautiful song.
one of Tom Jones' best songs. He has great voice. One of the great singers ever. When you could still understand the words sung and the songs had real meaning.
Regards from Israel :) (I could not stop thinking about our captive Gilad Shalit who is held by Hammas in Gaza more than 4 years, and not even allowed Red Cross visits. I hope very much he will be home too, to touch the green green grass of home, soon)
This was Tom Jones at his very best singing all them years ago - its my favorite song of tom jones - Yes one day they will all come to meet me, but i was only dreaming !!!
This song was my dad's favorite song, he use to sing it when we had karaoke parties, and it just made me cry. My dad passed away three weeks after my older sister. When I hear this song it still puts tears in my eyes. It was played the day he passed and it was played the day we said our final farewell. I always think of him and also my sister when i hear it.
im so sorry to read about all the people who have passed away,it kinda gets to me,i always thought this song was from the perspective of a man who had died, and that he loved to see them but couldnt,i saw a documentery and this song was included,it doesnt go as such with what i thought, but a poinant song, one to get to your heart strings,my heart to those who have lost someone,i really mean it,i wish you all well.

Hi sorry to hear that your Grandad pased away. My mother pased away 4 years ago she loved this song too. Its a great song and I think of here everytime I listen to this song. Cheers Rick
This song is talking about a man going to be executed. He says that there is a guard and a sad ole padre (priest)..arm in arm we will walk at daybreak
This classic and a few other great country songs were written by Curley Putman, a singer/songwriter who grew up in Princeton, Alabama, a very rural area in the Southern Appalachian foothills. My Father is from there and knew him. Curley is now in the Alabama Music Hall of Fame.
My mother played this song all the time when I was a little girl and she would cry. I never knew what the song was about, but I knew that I didn't like it because it made Mom so sad. Now, Ii understand it and it makes me miss her. WOW! Amazing song.
@Tink2127 Your mom would love what you just said, cos she would know that you loved her and she would know that that is a precious thing, that your child loves you!
@kmoggie1 It's such an emotional song and it tells a STORY! This is what music should be about- not bragging about how many girls you have or keys you've sold.

I guess the green green grass is synonymous with the Green Mile Movie.
Green Mile Moive-Set on Death Row in a Southern prison in 1935, The Green Mile is the remarkable story of the cell block's head guard, who develops a poignant, unusual relationship with one inmate ...
to drtorchwood how would feel about the death penalty if you had your daughter and two grandaughter murdered and they had nothing to do with the reason for such a act grand childen was ten and six
i think what drtorchwood meant was that he loved the song but not the reason of y the guy is in jail...but thanks fpr clarifying the whole reason of why he ws in jail!
Siempre me a gustado esta hermosa canción sin saber la traducción , TOM JONES INTERPRETA con tanto sentimiento y expresión no hace falta saber el significado, pero ahora que esta su letra la hace mucho mas valiosa y es un clasico.
This song makes me cry. I was researching mentions of the death penalty in music for a project, and when I realised what this song was really about it's so sad :(
I wish we'd stop killing our own citizens. It chills my blood just to think about it
just to die for! it's my choice but nothing smells and looks better than the old green grass of home. always brings more than just tears rolling down my face...TJ is my man.
This was my mothers favourite song. She passed away in July, we played this at her ceremony. I still watch this video every day and cry..... I miss her so much.
What a Voice!!!!!
1973,May is etched forever in my memory,when i touched the green,green of home,besides,the old house,old tree,greeted by my mama & papa.Wow.

I guess the green green grass is synonymous with the Green Mile Movie.
Green Mile Moive-Set on Death Row in a Southern prison in 1935, The Green Mile is the remarkable story of the cell block's head guard, who develops a poignant, unusual relationship with one inmate ...

This song makes me cry. I was researching mentions of the death penalty in music for a project, and when I realised what this song was really about it's so sad :(
I wish we'd stop killing our own citizens. It chills my blood just to think about it

I have always heard "there's God and there's sad old poetry...on and on we walk". I have always wondered what on earth...
Thanks for the lyrics now I finally understand the whole song!
