Man, I get so many memories from this game, it's really scary. This was the real shit, though, the real original start of online gaming (for me anyway) the way we could meet people, find friends online, from all over the world. I couldn't believe my eyes when I started playing this. I wasn't allowed online because of the cost, but I used to have to sneak that huge long white wire (remember that thing) in the wall, and quickly take it out when my parents got home! I miss being that age!

I never played this nor have I played any MMO that shut down on me like this but I can imagine the heartbreak of the last minute of your favorite game with the friends you have made. I had a rush of nostalgia and started thinking about this game a couple days ago. I found out PSO2 is in the making and got really excited. Than I heard about the private gamecube servers and wanted to play, but my PSO GC disk is unreadable now. :( I checked the gamestop website and they are out of copies in every store around me and can't purchase it off their site. I then checked ebay and saw people were selling this and PSo plus for like 60 bucks wtf.

@stickdeath542 You can play PSO on the PC for free. At least I think you still can. I used to play in back in early 2008, and I last checked on it about 6 months ago and they're still doing it.

It's a private server (not run by Sega), but it's identical to the old Sega ones.

It's still going now as far as I know.

@chuganoga Sega turned to other things. The PSO community for the GC was not that huge and hunter's licenses were expensive. So at some point they decided it didn't reel in enough money, so they shut down the servers. I still remember that day, awww :( I started playing on the DC, they did the same thing there >.<

Unfortunately if you have the plus version or Episode 3 you need AR version 1.1 or earlier. To get that, well, is extremely hard to come by, and because of its rarity, also can be quite expensive...

I just wish maybe they realeased for xbox 360 too, PSU isn't nearly as fun as the first game. Plus everyone wasnt boring as hell. On PSO, when someone would join your game, everyone would always talk and become friends. Now in PSU, no one says shit and they just do the mission, whats the fun in that???

Though it'd be best for them to put it on PC considering online play is the main aspect of it and it wouldn't be restricted to a handful of players due to psn/xbl differences.

Instead of just ending the online capabilities, SEGA should have offered a subscription service (monthly fee or yearly fee) to keep it going. SEGA claims that it costs them money to keep up the servers. There are enough supporters who would have paid SEGA for the chance to remain on-line with them. It speaks to SEGA's dis-loyalty to the fans...over and over again. Just ask Shenmue fans. They are crying out to SEGA to finish the damn thing. It's all about the money.

GC version has Episode I and II,dreamcast version has only Episode I.GC version is as same as Xbox version.

@propriodaroma no, they all had different servers. the only beef i had with the xbox port was that you >had< to have a gamer tag just to play offline. so getting a used xbox after the xbl server going down for the 360 was a pain. even then the game only had a small changes. better sound and character modeling<-slight. and DLC sega did no work on the game engine so the problem that the gc port had with all 4 players in the same room was still there. all so . crappy lag'd voice chat.

This literally made me cry, and it takes a lot to make a guy admit to tears. I remember me and a three of my other friends finally getting to ultimate after so long. We all played splitscreen so we didn't get to experience the online goodies but still this video brought back a lot of good memories Q_Q.

They shut it down because it was an old game which not enough people played for SEGA to earn a 'Decent' profit. All games have to die and SCHTHACK Server supports GC so yeah, go ahead if you want to play.
