i'm going to see chris thile next wednesday night. when i found out he is going to play at the club i work at i almost shit myself. i'm so fucking excited.
There aren't many more soothing sounds in the world to me than someone playing a mandolin. When I was in school there was a boy who would play the mandolin during lunch and breaks, and it always calmed me. He adored Chris Thile. I hope he makes it as a mandolin player =)
@lsmab I couldn't disagree more with that statement. You should listen to more than one of his classical interpretations before making that statement. He technique is very soulful and his timbre and attack are precise for the pieces I've heard him play.
@JazzBluesClassical42 You do realize that all classical musicians learn from written music, right? I don't see what the big deal is if someone asks for tabs, its just another form of written music. Get over it.
All the pre-70s mandolinists are rubbish... bill monroe, for example, can't pick the right string hahaha and they still made him famous for stealing music from the farmers. He is a conservative just like the president. Thankyou to people like Sam Bush and Chris here for learning to play before they went pro.
A complete pleasure! The wonder of Bach is that his music addresses all genres from even before his own time through to blues and jazz. It shows us through the mirror that is music our most humane self. Every musician the world over should bow their head in thanks to him.
Actually, the guy from Twilight looks like him. As he has had this basic style of hair for several years before the movie even came out. I know you're just pointing it out, but comments like this always bug me. They judge people based on what's popular not taking into account whether or not said person being judged has had or done said thing before the popular "landmark" came into being.
@RoofTopPiano I guess that opens the argument of chronology vs. ubiquity. As ridiculous as it is, Chris Thile is relatively unknown outside of certain circles while twilight is EVERYWHERE.
@RoofTopPiano -- aaaand, Chris Thile looks like just about any random English dude who doesn't care about his hair... as Rob Pattenson has pointed out, he doesn't understand why people like his hair, because that's just the way all the blokes over there wear their hair when they don't care about how it looks. xD
but, anyway, I agree with your post. Bugs me too.
well he actually didnt put one fret to make the clear sound at all...if he played it less fast it would sound way better...fastness is not always the best (maybe for americans and their bluegrass musik ok...but not in classical music)
@SG4LProductions sorry buddy i dont think anyone tabs out Bach! you can find the sheet music at the IMSLP/ Petrucci Library. The piece is the Prelude to Bachs Partita for solo violin #3 in E Major BWV 1006. Some positions might not be clear from the sheet music but the video here helps for most of finding the fingerings. That's half the fun, eh?
i play mandolin too, i'm quite good actually but im soooooo fuckin far away from chris thile, it would be so awesome to get just one single lesson from him!!! :D
Agree with khickie100. I thought his bluegrass-ness would have gotten in the way of him "getting" this piece, but it seems not. He's just a musician, and I'm just a snob, apparently.
Fantastic, I had to laugh a bit at the end just out of amazement. Chris Thile has the craziest right hand, was fun to only see a blur and never really a solid pick.
i have given up completely trying to understand what it is about this guy that makes him one of the best mandolin players, nay musicians, to ever live. his touch and feel on the mandolin and the expertise which which he phrases this piece is simply mind boggoling!
Thile is the master.. He really does make these Bach pieces look so easy! Especially the part where it crosses three strings.. to have such control and to be able to keep the notes subtle while going lightning fast! and 2:09 on of courses is really awesome too.. Aaand that mandolin is incredible! this video is just perfect. i gotta go practice more..
PLEASE put the bonus disc of these performances on iTunes so i can spend my money on it...!
my daughter plays the mandolin and the violin. she's played the bach partitas and sonatas on the violin - this is amazing. chris thile continues to impress.
good lord. for anyone who has never played mandolin. its a lot more difficult than chris thile makes it look. the strings are much harder to press down than a guitar.
@giggleblaggle - Hey, I used to think that way as well. Chew on this thought for moment. If you can play well enough to communicate what is in your heart to your listeners, you win. Talent matters not so much as what we do with it. God Bless.
Well...I quit. No more music for me. I just can't even practice anymore knowing that this is what's out there for me to compare to. Nope. Throwing all my instruments away. He's too danged good.
@giggleblaggle I play guitar and I used to think that way as well but after a while I figured out theres definitely a lot more to music than comparing yourself to the upper echelon of musicians. You can play some pretty simple songs and still have fun playing them and hearing yourself play them, hell maybe even adding a few little runs of your own to something thats already out there... There's plenty of enjoyment to be had out of music without getting paid a penny for it.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
If I were to be hypercritical, I would just make one point: like most great players (Elliot Fisk being the most glaring offender) Chris Thile tends to sacrifice putting feeling and emotion into his playing for the sake of speed and technical perfection. I think his effort would have been enhanced if he slowed down a notch and put a little more feeling into his playing even employing a little rubato in parts.
I'd like to see what he can do with Bach's "Chaconne" from the Second Partita.
@camounteer Wow. If you had ever seen Thile maybe you'd know that he actually oozes emotion and feeling when he plays. Just his facial expressions alone are about as emotional as anything.
Chris Thile is one of those guys that words can not describe. His talent level is so high that it can not be measured. The interesting thing about him as a player is that a lot of people profess that he "hot dogs" it to much in a group setting which i've never heard from him but I met him about 2 years ago at a bluegrass festival and he is one of the most genuine sincere people I have ever met. Great talent
He is absolutely one of the most talented men on the planet. Been listening to Nickel Creek since I can't even remember. This is beyond incredible. :)
Are you implying that people who play videogames can't enjoy great music? Also, three periods would have sufficed; I believe your excess use of over twenty to be redundant. So bam.
Oh yeah, Chris Thile is amazing. So is Bach. Chris Thile + Bach = :D
he seems to use a thin pick, unlike the normal Bluegrass players that use a 1mm or thicker...God i hate Bach, it even hurys my throat to pronounce it however this is mezmerizing..........
Thile is the master of mandolin. I can listen to him all day and still find things that I never heard before in a song. A lot of kids pick up mandolin because of him.
I like how he just sits there with his feet calmly crossed and resting on the mandolin case. "Oh, you know, amazing and complex mandolin playing, no biggie, you guys."
The only thing that makes his ability to play this any more ridiculous is the fact that he plays it from memory.... I honestly don't understand what planet he is from.
