  • i played this song on my guitar and sang this song on my wedding it seem to fit perfect to our relationship we always had problems weather it was with family or whatever....and she started to cry....best night of my life...and im 26 looking forward to many more memories with her....

  • Tallahassee is my favorite tMG album, and this is my favorite song on it. I just love how in the opening instrumental, you can just hear the fight that's left it. He's resigned to this doomed romance. He knows they'll never really work, they never have, but he hasn't been able to leave before, so he'll stick it out if she will.

  • I was pleasantly surprised to hear this when watching moral orel. I didn't think any of my favorite bands would end up on adult swim broadcasting XD

  • heard this on moral orel and its pretty good.

  • moral +1

  • Morel Orel!!!!!!

  • Yeah just heard this on Moral Orel. Had to see who it was :)

  • wow just lstened to this 5 times after seeing that episode of moral orel

  • MORAL OREL

  • what album is this from?

  • @thenewfella611 Tennessee

  • @thenewfella611 - it's from "tallahassee", and it's well worth the purchase if you can find it.

  • all i have to say is: thank god for moral orel.

  • this is the perfect song to be played on moral oral...or just in general.

  • really sad

  • I believe this entire argument was based off of, "I don't understand the concept of personal interpretation please rape my face."

I should also note the irony of anyone who argues about the meaning of Mountain Goats songs on the internet calling someone else a hipster.

  • @MsMeguca A hipster professes a vague, shallow interest in a non-traditional or esoteric subject in order to bolster their social standing as a non-conformist and trend setter.

When a guy says (without a shred of irony) that he really gets the Mountain Goats and wants to play Old College Try at his wedding, I am forced to say "You're a fucking hipster and this music is above you."

"Anybody can interpret anything however they want!" is the war-cry of the tasteless and shallow.

  • @EntropicMisanthropic

I can't peak for him but there is a certain ironic (fuck you hipsters haven't claimed this word yet) beauty to this song. It expresses a knowledge of the pitfalls of marriage and shows that you are fully aware that this could be a huge mistake, but you're willing to bet it's not.

Judging by your misuse of the word weeaboo I don't trust your use of the word hipster either.

  • @MsMeguca Also, read the fucking lyrics you fat weeaboo.

  • Moral oral <3

  • this song is incredible.

It makes my broken heart feel a lil better.

    p.s.morel orel kicks ass.

  • from the aspirins to the cross tops to the elavils LOL!!

made my girl listen to this and she didnt find it too funny =p

  • Incredibly sad song. Probably the saddest I've ever heard.

  • Viewer 124,124.

  • Rom Spaceknight!

  • This song is so sad. I hate to think that I'd spend a lot of time in a relationship that would be similar to a trash can fire in a prison cell. It's just so sad as the writer seems to be on the edge of going into a relationship destined to fail. And its not a fail like everyone will just go their separate ways. This is an imminent separation laced with a bitter pill of some deeply disturbing feelings. Yet I would bet money that the writer was going to be miserable with or without the realation

  • @cgotro70360 i'm guessing mountain goats is new too you

  • Why All The Fighting Just Enjoy The Fucking Song

  • MORAL OREL!!

  • Are any of the other Mountain Goats CDs as good as Tallahassee? I tried listening to Sunset Tree but it didn't really grab me like Tallahassee did.

  • @gsp1175 maybe try All Hail West Texas? John wrote it for all the methheads he used to know.

  • @RAZORPREADATOR Get a life razor i see you everywhere.

  • @LilTortillaBoy420 you comment as much as me and I defended you when the shitload of people ganged up on you about that comment when you said you hated emos can we just get along todays my birthday check my file I love weed too Mostly k2 lately and the liltortillaboy from that commedian that did that cool voice arnold cant spell his last name in liltortilla boy we cool.

  • @circus342 Someone that likes the same music and geyying high I will take your word for it but I still got 30grams of k2 from topk2.com

  • Iilluminate this place

Like a trashcan fire in a prison cell

Like the searchlights in the parking lots of hell

That is the greatest imagery I have ever heard, I wrote it on my bedroom wall.

  • I know I'm a nerd because I know who both of those characters are in the image. :)

  • This is such a beautiful song, and it feels so much more real than most love songs. "We are terrible for each other, but I love you so much that if you allow, I will follow this road to its end; I will be with you until we destroy each other."

  • @dwhit8 Thank you so much for getting the point of the Alpha Couple. Please explain this concept to every hipster you meet, since this album is apparently the newest thing for people to relate their shallow relationship-of-the-moment to.

If you haven't yet, please look up the Tallahassee liner notes on Google and also the album website on Internet Archive. It's totally worth it.

  • @dwhit8 Yeah, the funny lyrics, and grainy voice.... still don't make it any less depressing. It's so not serious that it's serious.

  • :D wonderful song.makes me wanna cry yet makes me so calm

  • amazing :3

  • wow top comment I wish youtube would tell you about those kind of things.

  • "I want to say I'm sorry for stuff I haven't done yet, things will shortly get completely out of hand." That line is absolutely magnificent.

  • @ ScitnaMusic- me too

  • @ ScitnaMusic- me too

  • love the song but the robots being punched in his nuts haaa. get it nuts

  • @RAZORPREADATOR I GET IT!!

  • love the song but the robts being punched in his nuts haaa. get it nuts

  • ROM SPACE KNIGHT!!

  • Suggestions for people who like this song:

Go read the 1) lyrics 2) liner notes and 3) website for Tallahassee. You can find all three on Google and they bear John Darnielle's unique fingerprint.

The whole album's about the "Alpha couple", this depressed married couple who have grown to hate each other yet are perfectly compatible in all the wrong ways, pushing each other to drink and self-loathe and wait for death. This song is their solemn pledge to each other, a kind of suicide pact.

  • it's vague enough to fit almost everyone. when my husband and i first started dating, we assured each other we weren't as good as the other thought we were, and we apologized for how we'd be when we really got to know each other. we promised that we'd stay together as long as we could but that we'd end it before we started to hate each other. we didn't.

  • I first heard this song from the comic Friendly Hostility, when the author made a playlist of songs to be listened to when reading the last few pages. This was the song for the last page. The comic's very well written/drawn and definitely worth a read if you have the time

  • This song reminds me of the relationship my parents have.

They'll never be the way they used to be, they may not love each other anymore, but they're going to the end of the line.

  • I feel really sorry for everyone that is saying that this song perfectly fits their lives. This is not a song about the good life or deep love. It is a song about your love totally falling apart, but your lives remaining together. I wouldn't wish the feelings in this song on anyone. It is an amazing song though.

  • @FoeMike i agree with your first bit of the good life...but it is a song of love....most marriages lose there spark...but its the love of staying togethor till the end....that although the spark is gone the love is there...like when he speaks of her eyes...the beauty of the song is through the endurance of there love....no matter how disfunctional it is

  • 3 people don't have low self-esteem

  • Few songs come around, that portray the life of my wife and I. This is one. I Love You Baby.

  • I heard this song on morel orel, it feels to me like a song about forced happiness.. which is true about many religious families, christian especially. it makes me very sad.

  • showed my friend this he didnt think much of this guess whos not sleeping over again

  • @RAZORPREADATOR Lmfao.

  • This song reminds me of my parents: broken and dysfunctional but in it till the end. Great song.

  • I ALSO KNOW WHAT THIS SONG MEANS MORE THAN YOU OTHERS!

  • @drcurio you probably do. misery is a very personal thing, tho i think i'm paraphrasing some russian...

  • Rom, Space Knight! Is sad.

  • 3 People....Ah eff It.This song it pure epicness XD

  • @ashleyt87 i think its actually about bringing someone down who doesnt know how to let go

  • @ashleyt87 lol, fuckin loser

  • Why would anyone want to play such a negative song at a wedding? Don't get me wrong, I f'ing love this song! It's just not a happy song! I don't see how anyone could get confused.

  • @armoredfalconoid71 Marriage should be happy but the sad reality is that a large chunk of marriages end in divorce and of those that don't, who knows how many become unhappy like the "Alpha Couple." By playing this song, a couple acknowledges that love and life aren't perfect, but they're going to give it the Old College Try and do their best to make it work. By saying "I do" they are promising, for better or worse or through the parking lots of hell, to go down to the end with each other.

  • Are people getting marreid just to play this song at their wedding? lol.

  • @LilTortillaBoy420 Yes :)

  • i love you mountain goats.

  • What I love about the Mountain Goats is that nothing feels like it is overstated. The music and the lyrics sound so down-to-the-ground. Yet it always gives you this horrible, subtle feeling dismantling the pleasure center in your brain with a second-hand spade, telling you that everything is awfully wrong. Strangely you always feel better afterwards.

  • SKLANG!

  • @ShoopStudios I always imagine the Alpha couple as Clay and Bloberta Puppington. Also, Morel Orel is my favorite television show.

  • @ShoopStudios I always imagine the Alpha couple as Clay and Bloberta Puppington.

  • nice

  • what is that picture from? I saw this picture like an hour ago and I am experiencing deja vu what

  • @Ambulanceo

An issue of the old Marvel series ROM: Space Knight. That or an X-Men comic, seeing as this is back when Rogue was still a villain. ROM was the shit, man.

  • @mercurymimosa If your a girl, lets get married, and if your a guy, I do too.

  • @MrChrizgdawg wtf lol

  • I want this played at my wedding, if I ever have one.

  • Comment removed

  • @mercurymimosa I assume you don't want your marriage to work out to well, then. "I will come all the way down with yet" is not a good thing. Nor is "Our love has never had a leg to stand on" or "I can feel it in the rotten air tonight".

  • @mercurymimosa what the fuck is wrong with you?

  • @bpayne88 he fucked your mom too rough a couple nights back, still recovering,

  • @mercurymimosa No you don't.

  • @mercurymimosa i did too at one point.

  • @mercurymimosa

Lol I'd want to play an all instrumental version..I love the song, but I think the lyrics may put off some of the guests who don't know the song.....

.....or an all instrumental Love Love Love

  • @mercurymimosa Not to minimize your feelings, but you're clearly a fucking hipster who doesn't understand anything about the Alpha Couple.

This shit isn't a joke, and if you're playing this shit at your wedding you don't need to be getting married, but instead running for the exit while there's still time.

The point of the Alpha Couple is that they're both hell bent on self-destruction, but they can't help themselves.

Unless you plan on being dead from alcohol in the next year, please stfu.

  • @EntropicMisanthropic You obviously don't know jack about interpretation, intent and context. I agree that, in context, this song is not to be played at weddings, but alone, it can be. Interpretation shouldn't be just focused on intent and macro.

  • @EntropicMisanthropic I have an idea! How about you breathe deeply, calm down, and appreciate this work of art, rather than overreacting over how someone misinterpreted it? You and I both know John Darnielle wouldn't want you to be so concerned over such a little thing.

It's an easy mistake to make; maybe the commenter didn't know this was from Tallahassee.

So let's just listen to this fucking beautiful music, close our eyes, and pretend that no one else exists

  • Comment removed

  • @mercurymimosa You... do realize this is an anti-love song, right? "Our love has never had a leg to stand on?" Doesn't sound very romantic to me.

  • @mercurymimosa You want a song about two people realizing all they will ever do is destroy each other and hurt each other but they're just going to stay together and be misserable to be your wedding song? That's insane.

  • @ProphetAnonymous That's emo for you , lol.

  • Why the hell is this Rom: Space Knight fighting Rogue when she was evil?

Honestly, I didn't expect to ever see my favorite Marvel hero connected to an awesome Mountain Goats song, but hell, I'll take it.

  • I love the song, but what is an elliville?

  • @IcecestroXi elavil... anti depressant drug.

  • This may very well be the saddest song I've ever heard.

  • 2.10 always makes me think of napoleon dynamite hehe

  • For some strange reason whenever i listen to The Mountain Goats, i picture Crispin Glover as George McFly singing haha

  • From the house tops to the gutters. From the ocean to shore. The warning signs have all been bright and garish, and far to great in number to ignore. From the cities to the swamplands, from the highways to the hills, are love has never had a leg to stand on, from asprins, to the cross tops, to the Elovils? But I will walk, down to the end, with you, if you will come, all the way down, with me...

From the entrance to the exit is longer than it looks from where we stand. I want to say I'm sorry

  • @Justwosweet

and how does it go on ???

  • for stuff I haven't done yet. Things will shortly get completely out of hand. I can feel it in the rotten air tonight. In the tips of my fingers, in the skin on my face. In the weak last gasp of the evenings dying light. In the way those eyes I've always loved illuminate this place. Like a trash can fire in a prison cell. Like the search lights in the parking lots of hell. I will walk down to the end, with you, if you will come all the way down with me.

  • @Justwosweet

thank you thank you thankyou...what a beautiful song, I love to hear it again and again and again...

  • I have no idea what Moral Orel is.

  • @Zombieminion

Get on it. Amazing show that started off as a funny satire of an overly christian town with its real problems. Then the last season took a turn showing the deep terrible sadness and irony of how messed up people really are even though they look completely different on the outside. That said, the last season was monumental and awesome.

  • @brewskhee It must be a pretty cool show if they play The Mountain Goats.

  • @Zombieminion

Not only did they use they use The Mounain Goats, but the lyrics to the song "No Children" fit perfecly with the theme of the show. Look up "Numb Morel Orel" and will see how much the music affected the actual show. You might need to watch it from the beginning to get it...but either way, an amazing show.

  • heard this song on the album for the first time, thought of Clay and Bloberta, and cried my butt off.

  • DFTBA guys

  • Clay and Bloberta were some of TV's best villians.

  • @alleyeson me24 That's too simple. Were they flawed? Yes, but they were far too sympathetic. Antagonists, sure, but villains? Naw.

  • this song is so beautiful

  • @EVERYONE, ESPECIALLY THE POSTER:

Thanks I love this song, heard it via Morel Oral & am happy to find it here. Oddly & funnily enough, it reminds me of my husband & our relationship, now 12 years & counting! We went through each other's Hell & did not back down and stayed together. He is my soul mate & the best man I have ever known, this is dedicated to you Beloved, I will always walk all the way down with you, no matter what happens, positive or negative, our love will only grow stronger.

  • this song is kool...heard it from 1 of the l4d parodys :]

  • Who are the 3 jerk-wads who gave this the thumbs down? And yes, Moral Orel was GREAT... and season 3 was INCREDIBLE.

  • @rodneyws1977 yea man so many problems its like a drama show but it doesnt sux

  • "In the way those eyes I've always loved

    Illuminate this place

Like a trash can fire in a prison cell

Like the searchlights in the parking lots of Hell

    I will walk

    Down to the end

    With you

    If you will come

    All the way down

    With me"

  • The music made the entire series for me...

I was hooked at IO Perry...the Mountain Goats are the like the beefy innards of the genius that is moral orel...

  • Dino is a genious

  • @modshroom

im so fucked up i misspelled genius

  • help

  • I just want to say I dig the Ultron comic panel.

  • This song reminds me of me and my gf who I haven't seen in a month now.

    =\

  • I like this song. If this is your kind of music why did you snarkilly send me that "I'll make your bub bubs bounce" comment"?

  • add the rest of this album if you can

  • Does anyone know if these "Alpha Series" songs are based on actual experiences the singer had or if they are all just concept songs?

  • I can't tell if this is the most romantic or depressing song I've ever heard. Probably both.

  • heard this on Moral Orel, as well as their other songs in the series. I love them all.

  • My new favorite Mountain Goats' song.

  • i also found this song through Moral Orel! had to pause the TV and jot down the song info to look it up!

  • i just did too exact same thing

  • @ScitnaMusic hahahahaah just did the same damn thing

  • @ScitnaMusic moral orel has the best soundtracks

  • moral orel introduced me to some great music =]

  • i know i love "no children"

  • Don't watch that much Morel Orel, but I'm delighted to see this song has made it onto Adult Swim. Essentially the soundtrack for my stay in Scandinavia.

  • Lol everyone watches morel Orel here I see haha

  • i just heard No Children on morel orel and so I was listening to other songs from the album. But I recognized this from morel orel when I heard it.

  • this song makes me feel both sad and happy but its meaning holds somthing that reasures me that everything will be ok :D perfect song to learn and play for my gf

  • I know what you mean. Like the words are sad but the vibe is happy.

  • heard this on moral orel episode help i saw help when it was the final 13 on adult swim but my first and fav episode is the lords prayer the 1 where orel meets christina

  • Heard this on Moral Orel, but I'd heard it before. Amazing song.

  • I think the last 13 episodes of moral orel where the best of the series! You really get attached to the charactors and there struggles, I can't really remember the last time I got emotinaly involved in that way, and when it showed orel as a grown up it was just incedible.

  • Heard it first on Moral Orel.

  • Post this if you heard this on Moral Orel

  • heard this on Morel Orel, amazing song

  • First heard this on Moral Orel. Loved it immediately.

  • they both have the same feel to them, fairly depressing, but something about it makes you fell really good.

  • lol same here.

  • @magicalshrimp23

lol for real i heard it yesterday n i was like i love this song

  • this song is good.

  • by the way, I love you baby and I will never stop loving you

dueces to all the little children, right!

  • You know, I always said I would go through the things in this song for love...and nothing has changed!

When it looks like the darkness and the hurt is too much to deal with, what do you do?

When you love someone, truly love someone, when do you get to that point when enough is enough?

    NEVER!

(yes I got that from The Mexican. God bless James Gandolfini)

I will walk down to the end with you

if you will come all the way down with me

  • i liked him until he beat Rhianna

  • ROM: Space Knight!
