This is very good, the Daleks are natural subjects for computer animation but this avoids the temptation to make it look expensive, which is not in keeping with the story. Nice job!
@chasmFL Thanks! It's no coincidence that I don't try to animate anything organic! Daleks are easy. :-) Although I am working towards a little clip which might include a humanoid figure ... they just won't be doing much!
DUDE! What do I have to do to get you to reconstruct whole episodes? I'll help promote, mirror it, do titles....I'm a musician and UNIX geek. Anything, man. This story needs to rise from the grave, and seems the audio and telesnaps are enough for someone with your talent.
Wow, that is just brilliant. Have you ever submitted any of your work to Loose Cannon? (It's been a while since I saw their "Evil", so I can't remember if they used this...)
I would have thought you had seen the original episode! The camara angles and things are so realistic, it seems like you made this remembering them! Great!
Thank you kindly. Sadly I am far too young and handsome to remember this episode.
However I went to great lengths to match my camera angles to existing telesnaps. I also spent some time trying to work out where the 'Omega' mark is on the Dalek. It is often said to be in different places but I was able to prove conclusively they were written on the skirt panels.
This was great work...though it didn't appear like the Daleks were really rushing when the alarms were going off, I'm not sure if this was cause of the limited pacing the technology allowed or deliberate to poke fun at the fact that they usually only had 3 Dalek models to work with in any one shot.
Either way, I was MOST impressed! I agree, I want to see longer clips and maybe full episodes. :)
Brilliant animation, almost too good in fact. No jerky movement, no bumping into the scenery! The look however is almost seamless. Now the only problem is convincing rendering of human movement.
There is part of an epiosode of Evil that android65mar reconstructed. You should ask him for joining you or would he want you to join him. Hope you will get to assemble a team or how many you would need.
Good work. You should start on the episodes that were destoyed which you probably did here. There is a vhs tape about the Daleks that has the only episode if Evil that the BBC did not destroy. Looks like had part of a scene at the beginning that was not destroyed I agree with Flying English man about getting together with other fans to work on so it would dot take as long. You should make it a tame effort.
wow - you're an absolute genius - i'm in complete awe. this is truly stunning - i would rather pay for this in the stores than go out and buy war machines or trial of a time lord on DVD!
Not only are you consistently producing the best animated Dr Who effects reels on YouTube, what puts them over the top is your understanding of 1960s style TV production. It's the extreme close-ups, the composition of shots, and editing that really sell scenes like these. You'd almost believe you were watching the original! Kudos friend, but please put your prodigious talents to completing any FULL episode. These scenes are tantalizingly brief.
It must be done. Apparently someone is trying to animate "Evil" and hopefully all the other episodes will get the same treatment. Great Vid by the way! Looking forward to "Stolen Earth"
Last year I predicted to a friend that some time in the future fans dedicated enough would have the technology to recreate or complete missing video from this story with totally realistic cgi. Your work demonstrates that this will become reality sooner than I dreamt. And I thought I would have to make do with remembering seeing it once. Aged THREE.
But this calculation would be based on animating just Daleks, however Doctor Who also has human characters which are ten times harder to animate and render, with lip sync and expressions to deal with.
It's a shame that fans doing this sort of work don't use the internet to work together. Then the episodes would be completed in a fraction of the time.
It would cut down the time animating the human characters greatly if actors who looked reasonably close to the original ones played out the scenes and their faces were overlayed with those of the originals.
Where di you get that clip at the beginning of Victoria in her Evil of the Daleks costume from. It looks like the part where she walks into the control room and screams because of Maxtible.
this is fantastic. if a fan can create something like this there is no reason why the bbc couldn't recreate what i reckon would be one of the best Patrick Troughton stories ever. it would be their animation reconstruction. (tho that was still quiet impressive)
There's a lot of amazing people making stunning CGI work on Daleks and TARDISes and stuff - where the problem really lies is animating the human actors - that's a lot harder :)
Wow. I like it how you keep the direction simple too- a lot of 3d recons tend to show off that they are CGI by using endless pans and huge sets. But this seems to be very true to what would have been achievable when the serial was produced in the 60s. 5/5
I'm pleased you say that because it was a deliberate attempt to stay true to the sixties style. I had done an earlier version in which the camera tracked and panned through all the shots, but I realised it was just too slick and not how old Doctor Who would look.
I've tried to introduce a camera wobble when we pull back from the close-up of the speaker too. But I still need to do work on making the Daleks movement more jerky and less smooth.
Well done! I thought I was watching the real thing instead of computer animation!

i've heard the omega signs are on the base. How can you prove they were on the base?
By the way, isn't the soundtrakc cd interesting how we can hear whats going on, but we will never know what it looks like?

great work, really really great work,

I'm working on a short clip from episode 7 and I'm keen to make the Daleks move more like they would have on TV. You're right - mine are too smooth.
I need to make them stop, bump and jerk a little more.... I'm working on it...

why dont you instead of make short clips, take up loads of time recreate all the episode
dalekidea 3 years ago
It took 1 week to produce 1 minute.
Therefore 1 episode would take half a year.
7 episodes would take until 2012.
But this calculation would be based on animating just Daleks, however Doctor Who also has human characters which are ten times harder to animate and render, with lip sync and expressions to deal with.
Does that answer your question?
themindrobber 3 years ago
i didnt mean that, i mean a special dalek episode around 4-5 mins long,
dalekidea 3 years ago
You might take ages on your own, but if you have a few people working on different scenes you might get it done quicker.
