Holy shit, beautiful cover. Gives the song more of a romantic feel, whereas Bright Eyes gave it a desperate, lustful feeling. Wow. Such a difference. (:
Love this song - I was just watching a re-run of The O.C and I heard this song - only about 12 seconds, but I fell in love with it. Googled it.... came across Bright Eyes & thought "that wasn't who I just heard... it was a woman" so I searched further.... and found this. Off to see if I can buy it on iTunes now.
I can never give covers a proper chance. I just listen and in my head I'm thinking how it's not right. It's not bad, but covers just never feel right.
@boredom974 OK the expressions “never feel right” and “dislike” are not the same I guess. Just blame it on my lack of knowledge regarding the English language. It’s universal on the greater part on the internet I know, but being born and living outside countries like the USA or UK gives me this little disadvantage.
@boredom974 "i can never give covers a proper chance" pretty sure that's grounds for disliking covers and when it's followed up with "it's not bad but covers just never feel right" that sounds a lot like you don't like covers, if not then you need to start phrasing your sentences a little better.
@3kour Not feeling right and not giving them a proper chance are different than dislike. There was no problem with the phrasing. Seeing how I said "It's not bad, but covers just never feel right." I don't see how people are assuming I dislike all covers.
This particular cover feels especially "not right" because it's so much slower and the words are said with as little emotion as possible while Conor sings with such emotion.
@boredom974 Whatever happened to “don’t sweat it” ?. Now your opinion changes from “not bad” via “especially not right” to “with as little emotion as possible”. These three qualifications are not in line at all to me. The last remark is almost an insult. Looks like you’re a great Conor fan (can’t blame you for that anyway) who feels covering His work is sacrilege.
@MrWhitedogs My opinion is still "not bad, but it doesn't feel right." I've said that already. Just because it doesn't feel right (because I'm used to the original) doesn't mean it's bad. Also lacking emotion can be good in music if done correctly and it works well for this cover. She seems to be in a haze while singing it.
Perhaps something about the phrase "not feel right" is being lost in translation here. Oh well.
@klkool1 your kinda true , but I like it this way too, because now she can identify more with the song. Especially with this song , cuz you got to live in this song and understand before you can sing it like it's supposed to be sung.prefer the Bright Eyes slightly more , way more rough
Indeed, I love the anger that comes from Conor. Makes the song much more moving.
I probably shouldn't be so critical on these covers because there's no one that can sing it quite like Conor... But without the thought of Conor singing it, I would say it's an Okay cover.
@klkool1 To my opinion a cover doesn’t have to be a copy. Bettie Serveert wrote a lot of songs themselves and I never heard of Bright Eyes until this performance. After this I bought a few of their albums and discovered it’s a great band. The Bettie Serveert cover took me further on my “musical journey”. The writing of the song contributes maybe 50 % of the total result. So Bettie Serveert can’t ever do this better than Bright Eyes and they know it. I think this version is 2nd best.
@MrWhitedogs I mean when talking about love/sex - its universal, the feelings...plus when a man is in drag singing I'm every woman, its really not that strange, yet he is still a man.
@swthoughts The moment you draw the conclusion a man singing “I’m every women” is in drag at least proves to me gender can play a role in songs sometimes, because these are guys who want to play a female role and pick a song that suits them (I have no problems with that by the way).
@moxieo ""Lover I Don't Have to Love" is a song by Bright Eyes released as a single in 2002 and placed on the album Lifted or The Story Is in the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground." "It was covered by Bettie Serveert[1] on their 2004 album Attagirl, and this cover was played extensively during the episode "The Undertow" of The O.C.. The line "I asked your name, you asked the time" is a reference to the novel The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger." Wikipedia.
For anyone that doesn't know, the entire performance from which this video was taken is available on the DVD that's included with their Bare Stripped Naked CD from 2006.

I don't really care for this cover.
I alway watch these video's with open eyes, but It bothers me she won't say 'I want a girl who's too sad to give a fuck'
Conor brings the guy into the song, I think she should use the girl and not change the song up.

@swthoughts Music doesn’t, lyrics ... hmmm
I still find it a bit strange hearing a man sing “I’m every woman” for example
But that maybe my narrow mind of course.
