  • Which do you think is the worst crash? I think Space Shuttle Challenger! Space Shuttle Columbia crashed during a landing @ Dallas

  • @barrettreynolds5 NEither of them was a crash, challenger exploted seconds after takeoff, and columbia disintegrated. both are just as bad but challenger had a higher chacne of being avoided than columbia.

  • Which do you think is the worst crash? I think Space Shuttle Challenger!

  • Lets hope that Atlantis returns safely in the last shuttle voyage.

  • Could you please tell which music you used at 2:30 onwards?

  • @GeenHandicap12 It's Moonlight Sonata by Beethoven.

  • Challenger DON'T go with throttle up!

  • @eddo1983 it should'nt have even lifted off, nasa engineers want'd to scrub the launch due to the extremely cold temps during the night, as they knew it could affect the srb's.

But nasa management were ignorant of this and launched the shuttle instead. As for columbia, the launch should have been aborted during lift off, I'm sure they would have seen the wing getting damaged on live cameras during liftoff.

  • Thanks for this great Video...,German translate:Danke für das Großartige Video:-)Ich schaue es mir oft an weil ...,mein Favorite Shuttle ist die Columbia.Thanks...Danke:-))

  • may God rest their soul, sad... sad

  • Chris, wonderful editing job on this, thanks for sharing!

  • What an amazing video, the editing is out of this world. Thank you for making this and sharing it with us.

I still can't believe it has been 24 since the loss of Challenger and her crew. I was in the 3rd grade at the time and still remember that horrid day.

It has been 7 yrs since the loss of Columbia and I still remember the flashbacks to 1986 all over again...more like disbelief that it happened again.

Rest In Peace, you are gone in the flesh, but not spirit.

  • Wow... That was extremely moving. Incredible job putting this together. I hesitated on watching it at first, thinking I've seen the videos many times before. Very pleased that I did. Thank you

  • Terrible tragedies. Amazing vid tho man. Great job and very moving.

  • ***** Stars!!

  • what do want to hear "celebrate good times" asshole

  • commentary, asshole

  • Was I talking to you ? This is obviously a tribute whereby their is no fucking commentary

  • who r u calling an asshole

  • I was calling you an asshole until you had the common decency to remove your awful comment

  • whatever, just lay off the bad language

  • I usually don't curse however I have a deep admiration for the space program and exploration and these events were painful for me.... but I thank you for removing your disrespectful comment

  • no problem, i lov deep space exploration also. I am a huge fan of the Universe series.

  • I had never seen footage of the wing getting hit before (4:23), and I have been looking for it. Nice video!

  • my heart goes out for these true heros and their family.

The reality we see today, the civilization we live in today, was made possible by explorers like them and the courage they have/had to make the world a better place.

  • Someone might have knew or had an idea of a possible probelm 3 days before Columbia disaster.. but who would admit to that? 3 days before the Columbia disaster a picture came into my mind which was of a white bird flying straght up into the sky the bursting into a ball of flame.. i told 3 people soon as i saw the picture, one of them said to me the next day, did you know in the U.S theres a space shuttle taking off, i said no. so on the day i watched take off..

  • @ST165BIRMINGHAM

I saw Columbia re-entering over from where I live in Australia. We usually can't see the shuttle's but this time it was brighter than usual. I thought it just must be the re-entry. But I awoke the following morning to the news that the shuttle had broken up on re-entry. And the thought of viewing the last minutes of these people's lives was extremly saddening.

  • Je to moc smutné,co obě posádky raketoplánů postihlo.Nedá se na to zapomenou.Patří jim čest a uznání.Obě to byly veliké tragédie, které se neměli nikdy stát.R.I.P

  • very nice video in contribution to the challenger and columbia tragedy i hope that nasa will take moral values over profits and loosing money due to malfunctions.

  • AXHEJAZ: I agree with your sentiment, but NASA does not make profits. It is public sector. They worried about politics and reputation and the human desire to deny problems, not profits.

  • You did very good with this movie. I love it. Every time I see a TV show or on the Computer about the Spce Shuttle Challenger I always learn new stuff about what happen to it. I love space shuttles. I think they are cool. When I was younger I went to go see Space Shuttle Atlantic blast off. It was very coll. You could feel the fire across the lake. It was very fun to see a Space Shuttle launch in the air.

  • It's Atlantis, not Atlantic.

  • Ah, I just read where there is no abort until SRB burnout. Too bad. Can't understand why though.

  • If someone had been watching a bit closer, that o-ring failure would have been noticed soon enough to abort and ditch the boosters and fuel tank. I could tell it was screwed and I'm just a country bumpkin. I know if a rocket scientist had seen it he would have known something was bad wrong and could have ordered an abort. Oh and the commentator on the Challenger incident cracked me up, though the disaster isn't funny. "...obviously a major malfunction.." No kidding, the damn thing blew up.

  • How would you abort after SRB ignition? Once lit, they are hauling azz in a glass. The shuttle would have been shreaded to bits due to the high loads of an abort with srb's burning. Either way, they were committed. It's good to be a country bumpkin. lol

  • They couldn't have dumped the boosters? Seems like you could just release them and let them go and then dump the fuel tank and fly it home.

  • I wish that it could have been that way but impossible

  • It's impossible to land during the SRB unseperated

  • Video is well done, but I must say in defense of NASA, this mission was delayed 18 times over the course of 2 years. EIGHTEEN! You can only delay so many times before you say, "Damn boys, we gonna build a fire in this thing and launch it, or sit here and look at it?" Two crashes in 125 flights isn't too bad considering what they do. 20,000 mph and 3000 degree heat on re-entry can't be easy on vehicles. You can't predict everthing. That said, Challenger could have been saved. cont.

  • agree with you, but don't bring them back.

  • it would of been nice if he included both return to flight missions showing their missions contuining

  • 14 Brave Astronaut heros

  • brilliantly done

  • What is the first music?

  • sounds like "Whale Rider" soundtrack to me.

  • Obviously a major malfunction.

  • just incredible nicely done

  • Actually, "lock the doors" means to preserve computer data and such. Mission Control is a very secure environment already.

  • May god cradle their souls!

  • not sure what was better, the pretentious editing or the illegible text.

  • Over a span of 15 years between the first disaster and the second, NASA made one improvement to its shuttle program. It taught the personnel to start saying "contingency" instead of "major malfunction" when shuttle exploded. That's progress, U.S. military-industrial complex style!!

  • Who is doing a better job?

...few of us really even care.

  • Who is doing a better job of what? Wasting my tax dollars? That would probably be whichever government branch was responsible for losing 8 billion dollars in cash in Iraq since the beginning of the war there. But I agree, few care about these matters.

  • yes, 'losing' it....just like the t.v remote.

  • Or my mind.

  • chillingly beautiful. well done.

  • agreed

  • Excellent comparison and how it has been edited together.Terrible disasters as a have a passion for NASA.But very pertinent and poignant views.

  • Who me!!! Hey, I support NASA.

  • Ok...You know I was there when it happend,I was 5 years old. And it exploded right in my face!!! that was very traumatizing...So IDK,Google "Fairglen Elementary" school, I was there at the time when it exploded.

  • I think this is a wonderful tribute to those who flew in columbia and challenger, and I trust this video was produced with that in mind. ***** stars

  • To all those whinning about how this video could have been better. Well lets see if you can do something much better or just as good? I bet not so just plain shut the fuck up!

  • does anybody know where there is a video of the recovery effort of the forward crew compartment of this shuttle? or did US GOV delete this information from the history banks to cover up yet another truth?

  • What is the piano music?

  • Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata."

  • Launch of Columbia and Challenger on the same month of January but different dates and different years.

  • This WOULD have been a halfway decent video if it wasn't for the over use of rotating, cutesy text flying around

  • By all means, go ahead and make your own video.

  • So if someone doesn't agree with you, that's your response? Go make your own video? Get real. The idea was nice, music was okay, frankly I found the rotating text over shots where a viewer wants to see more detail in the background to be over-used and distracting.

  • Your statement that this "WOULD have been a halfway decent video . . ." implies no fewer than two things:

    1. This video fails to meet the threshold of being "halfway decent."

    2. You possess the ability to objectively assess and critique video productions.

These two tacit statements can only lead to a single conclusion:

    1. You are a pompous--and boring-to-boot--ass.

    Hope this helps.

  • oh dear, your email hurt so badly..wait a second..I forgot, your opinion means jack sqwat. Kindly go fuck yourself

  • incredible, just incredible nicely done

  • Challenger=avoidable

    Columbia=unfortunate

best comparison i can think up

  • Chris Valentine did a decent job with this one. A little rough around the edges, but nice presentation overall.

RIP to the crews of Challenger, Columbia, and Apollo 1.

  • RIP

  • Rockets are dangerous+shit happens=

    Rocketshit.

  • 2 sacrifices in the name of the macrobes... :(

  • Some seek science, some just want to go home.

There is a saying, "If you got it, we brought it"

  • To bad people cannot respect those who have left us but only look to promote their own agenda. These people are heroes as they seek to pursue science which we all use, benefit from, and depend on. Shame on those who fail to remember this.

  • It is sad.

But what is worse is when "ordinary" people die from neglect.

That is the great tragedy, and nobody seems to care.

They always dress up for the notable people, but the unknown, laughter is heard in the distance.

I recall seeing a helmet on the ground. Someone's head was in that helmet. Go to a dumpster and you might find an old pair of shoes.

  • I never liked the propulsion set up on the shuttle. The orbiter was fine, perhaps things may have been better using something similar to the Saturn V with the orbiter on top?

  • it's very sad but your video was kinda nice (kinda cuz it's kinda sad) but still

  • who knows how many people have died because of NASA

  • A lot less than the number killed by mining or several other industries.

  • so sad rip in heaven

  • Very sad, but well done....

  • This is so Tragic.

    R.I.P

  • I dont c how calm the contoll room ppl are. there tone of voice dount even change 'oh ok we have an explosion lets go have lunch'' i would be like NOOOOO DAMN IT ! and start throwing stuff

  • You gotta understand man, these people are trained for these kind of situations. They had to remain calm in case there was a chance to save the crew.

  • you saved me typing that, thankyou =)

  • you are quit welcome=)

  • So sad.

  • what is the name of this song in the video?

  • Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata

  • Very well done. RIP to those who died...

  • this made me cry. specially when the crew was all smiling and waving in the beginning.

  • This is the kind of video that I was looking to put together but I don't have the equipment or the skills..yet..I made a musical tribute with mine using the music of Enigma. My tribute is to all of the true explorers that aim for space.

  • Very nice editing!

  • Excellent Piece...I hear they're talking about Paying people for videos on Youtube....this wouldn've been one that deserved good pay. (Unlike all those Sit-com collages!)

  • A sad video that makes me cry when I see it.

But yet I am always reminded that it is not technology that fails us, it is the people who don't understand the technology when something is going wrong or something is not right.

For that, we are all guilty

  • In spite of the failures the Shuttle is still a fantastic technological achievement.

  • Fascinating content but too much schtick! Do a version without all the gimmicks.

  • If you feel let down or disappointed, why not make a video of your own.

  • tRAVALING AT 1800 mILES AN HOUR, I WISH MY CAR WENT THAT FAST

  • An RTLS abort is impossible with the SRBs burning anyway. It takes a minimum of three seconds for the orbiter to pop off the ET if the command is given and at accelleration from the SRBs, the likely scenario is it would hang on the aft struts, pivot up, then break apart in the supersonic slipstream like it did after the stack broke up since there were no concussion forces in the fireball.

  • Nice, looks like a blog has started.

This is a great piece Chris as I said before.

Max is right, RTLS (return to launch site) is a 13% survival likley hood under the best of circumstances. At Challengers altitude at break-up you were sitting in that range. BUT at anytime before "throttle up" the % drops. Noone had a clue there was an issue so noone called for the RTLS. Bottom line, NASA climate, we were not fixing issues we knew about whith Chal. or Col.

  • I would NOT want to be the NASA technicion at the abort switch after those SRB's light up. Once they light up, all the expences of going into orbit are a done deal whether you go into orbit or not, & if you opt for an abort that turns out wasn't necessary, you could be in almost as much trouble as you would be if you don't abort when it was.

  • well, 21 years to the day that it happened... This stuff is still shocking.

  • Chris:

Nice, nice, I was wondering where you were going with this at first, but real nice.

  • can you garantee that you never drove impaired. Know your stuff before you debate.

  • very nice..

  • 1:15. Oh can I please be a NASA astronaut please!!? You think we would be driving cars if 1 out of every 15 crashed?

  • 1:15 do drive unsafely

  • its the space shuttle suppose to bend forwod

  • T-6 sec till T-0? yes. main engine start.

  • Don't forget that war is criminal in it's nature.

  • wow! what a great job you did on this! the editing was just perfect.

  • That fucking Israeli astronaut is a bloody war criminal

  • What the hell are you talking about, Cappuccino? Chris, well done on the video.

  • I believe that the Israeli was a member of the IAF team that raided the Iraqi nuclear reactor at Osirak in 1981 before it could become operational.

If you're sympathetic to Saddam's nuclear ambitions in 1981, then that might explain Cappuccino's post.

  • shut the fuck up ..how dare you ..you son of a bitch ...i should fucking hunt you down and ..rip your spine out ..oh yeah..from that comment ...you dont have one...

  • Hail, Columbia!

  • Dealing with a subject as sensitive as this, it would have been all too easy to botch the job and unintentionally create something tasteless or overly dramatic. That this did not occur is testament to the artist's judgment and video editing skills.

  • Well done.

  • Nice work Chris. I do video editing myself and I know just how much work you must have put into this.

  • this made me cry =[

  • Very nicely done... very sad... very powerful. Rest in Peace, deceased leaders of science.

  • lets all hope and prey that this never happens again

  • good work

  • Impressively well done non-tribute. The video is fascinating and skillfully edited. Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata adds a haunting, mournful dimension to this tragic, and gripping video. Thank you for your effort. God Bless all of our lost crews, may they reside among the stars that inspired them.

God's Speed to our living Pioneers.

  • Who can write down what they are saying between 2 min 34 s and 2 min 40 s, Thanks for everyone

  • makes me cry

  • Beautifully done.

  • A really well put together video, good editing and good use of graphics. Desperately sad and poignant to watch. RIP the Challenger/Columbia final flight crews.

  • Those who have lost thier lives in the space program are not martars but heroes. They had honor and courage beyond measure. The explores of the future will stand on the shoulders of the lost and reach across the vastness of space and touch the face of "GOD" and ask the questions "WHO ARE WE,WHY ARE WE HERE AND ARE WE ALONE"..God bless the space program.

  • May I suggest Kurt Vonnegut's SIRENS OF TITAN? Excellent book.

  • a masterpiece!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Great work, very well edited and put together.

  • great vid

  • Great work!

  • Great vid, very well done.

  • Regarding the piano solo that begins just before the "Challenger, go for throtlle up" command and continues until the end, was that composed especially for this project?

  • Mkspence, That piece, written for the piano, was composed by Beethoven. It's only one of his 32 sonatas. Op.27 No.2 in C# minor 1st mov. So the answer is no, it was not composed for this project. It was composed in the summer of 1801 in Hungary and even Beethoven was sick of it stating, "Surely I've composed better things!"

  • Are you serious?! That is Moonlight Sonata one of Beethoven's most famous pieces!

  • Gotta agree with Fidelio, this is overwrought, melodramatic and a bit pointless. Kind of stuff network TV news puts on to appear poignant...

  • You're right about that one. Jesus.

  • i htink your comment was pointless and you have no regards for the people that DIED key word there, spaceflight is the wya forward its science and those people risked thier lives for knowledge, your a conspiracist (wow my spelling sucks)

  • Are you on heavy medication? Perhaps you should be?

  • i dont know but i dont want any of what your smokin......... i think your disgusting, how can you disregard human beings like that...... its heartless

  • Amazing. As a longtime spaceflight enthusiast, I thought that that was a marvelously well executed piece. The message was also beautifully managed. 5'd and fav'd.

  • who cares if people die? ...just as long as corporations and shareholders keep getting richer and people's careers are protected...that's all that matters.

  • Who cares?

I happen to care, and the Fortieth President of the United States cared enough to address the nation with a thoughfully written speech about the first tragedy shows that he and his speechwriter cared.

  • This is an excellent video. Well done.

  • good*

  • Fidelio stfu.

This was one of the best things I've seen.

I usually skip around videos to get to the good part...but what wasn't goot about this?

    Wonderful job.

  • Seriously? In that case, I have a video of my pet gerbil, Raggot, dying of a heart attack - I slowed it down, and I've put Barber's Adagio For Strings over it as a soundtrack. The actual moment Raggot breathes his last is repeated 24 times, zooming in and out on his nose. There's a mock-up of a heart monitor as a split-screen with a caption at the bottom that shows the number of heartbeats left. I reckon you'll cream your pants at that.

  • What mawkish rubbish.

  • EXACTLY what i was thinking when i read your post, your a moron

  • rest in peace crew of columbia

  • i always watch these videos and turn to complete silence. we all just watched human life end before our eyes

  • may their souls rest in peace..godspeed..

  • Great Job

  • impresive

  • that's really good

  • OUTSTANDING Job....May they RIP

  • one of best videos i seen in my life how human stupidity can take over security and lives......

  • WOW that was wonderfull

  • It was a commisioned piece for a risk management seminar ...I was asked to stick with the crews/vehicles involved

  • Great bit of editing. I saw both distasters on TV when they occured. The one thing i remember about both, which is missing from this piece, is the people's faces in the observation crowd in 1986 when they realise that something has gone very wrong and the same in 2003 with NASA ground control. This footage should also be included if possible.

  • see chapter 2 of my film "and for other purposes" on YouTube for the people angle on Columbia

  • Beautiful.

  • thanks for this video...really puts it back into perspective...perhaps it's time to replace those ancient relics....

  • thats sad T_T we'll always remember the people that risked there lives for our advances in life... R.I.P to all the fleet of both ships
