1959 Oct 7 Saddam Hussein aged 22 was part of a CIA-authorised six-man squad tasked with assassinating Iraq leader Kassem. The attempt failed. Hussein was wounded. He escaped to Cairo and was on the CIA payroll.
1963 Saddams Party and CIA engineered a coup against Kassem. They assassinated him but Saddams party was tossed out almost immediately by a revolt of army officers.
The CIA official who organised the coup was James Critchfield. It was done to protect American oil interests in Iraq.
